Spalding Regional has new emergency department

Spalding Regional Hospital completed its latest expan-sion project during 2013, with the opening of a new Emer-gency Department. The new “ER,” designed in response to increasing patient demand, almost doubles the size of the original Emergency Department and increases capacity by 50 percent.

Spalding Regional Hospital treats more than 53,000 emergency patients a year.

“Our ED provides some of the latest technology in the area and sees patients from Spalding and several sur-rounding counties; this new ED will increase our clinical capabilities as well as provide more privacy and comfort to our patients and their families,” Emergency Department Director Amy Pitts said.

The new Emergency Department includes more private medical exam rooms as well as specialized trauma and critical care rooms with centralized cardiac monitoring and nursing sub-stations for direct patient observation; com-puterized records for safe, accurate charting; direct access

to radiology; a pneumatic tube station for quick expediting of specimens with the lab; and separate specialized areas for issues such as decontamination and psychiatric care.

The Emergency Department includes a “Fast Track” care area for non-emergency issues. The hospital also operates Spalding County’s Emergency Medical Service (EMS) with a staff of paramedics and EMTs, and a fleet of ambulances. The EMS responds to more than 15,000 calls annually.

In addition to serving Spalding County, the hospital’s EMS provides backup service for several surrounding coun-ties including Butts, Lamar, Pike and Henry counties.

Spalding Regional Hospital recently added two new ambulances to serve the community and region. The fleet now includes 10 vehicles specifically designed for Spalding Regional Hospital’s Emergency Services.

The new ambulances feature more room for the para-medics and the patient, and include some of the latest technology, allowing for faster and better treatment of patients. This includes the first use of Telemedicine in the region, incorporating webcam capability to allow for con-stant communications on route to the hospital between the paramedic, physician and patient.

from page 19

As with the rest of the EMS fleet, these units are also equipped with recent technology, in-cluding mobile hotspots for onboard Internet access, specially-designed Lifepack 15 advanced 12-lead EKG cardiac monitors and transport ventilators.

For the non-emer-gency patient, Spalding Regional also recently added a new online ER Express service that allows non-emergency consumers to schedule a time in the hospital’s ER schedule, while waiting in the comfort of their own homes.

According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, increased demand and decreased capacity are creating traffic jams in ER waiting rooms across the country, adding stress to an experience that al-

ready invokes anxiety.Spalding Regional’s

ER Express service allows non-emergency patients to simply visit the hospital website home page, click on the ER Express button, complete an online regis-tration form and choose a time of arrival. Then the patient simply arrives at that time and is seen by a health professional within 15 minutes.

“We know people want more convenience and predictability in the ER experience,” Chief Executive Officer John Quinn explains. “With this service, users enjoy the conve-nience of choosing where they wait and a projected time to see a health-care professional in the emer-gency room.”

Individuals requiring immediate medical treatment are directed to go immediately to the Emergency Department or call 911.

Spalding Regional recognized for service, safety

In recent years, Spalding Regional Hospital has grown and expanded services to meet community needs with a commitment to provide exceptional quality of care.

Spalding Regional promises our patients to provide an exceptional healthcare experience with the best pos-sible outcome. We deliver on this promise every day by keeping you at the center of everything we do, investing in our people, our facility and technology, and never settling for less than continuous improvement in the quality of care you receive.

When we do this, you will experience more than you expected and be confident that you made the right choice to trust Spalding Regional Hospital with your health.

This promise is evidenced by the awards and com-mendations the hospital has received on both the national and state level. In 2013, Spalding Regional was rated above both the Georgia and national averages for clinical quality care of heart failure, pneumonia and

surgical care improvement by the Hospital Quality Al-liance (HQA), an initiative that reports data on hospi-tals’ performance across the country.

The HQA consists of organizations representing consumers, hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations and federal agencies including the Cen-ters for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They publish their results for the public to view at www.HospitalCompare.hhs.gov.

Spalding Regional Hospital has been rated higher than state and national averages going back over four years. In September 2010, Spalding Regional was proud to have received certification as a Primary Stroke Center, earning the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JACHO), the independent organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 healthcare organizations in the United States.

This certification recognizes Primary Stroke Centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke patients.

In 2012, the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Office of EMS/Trauma also designated Spalding Regional Hospital as a Primary Stroke Center, commending the hospital and staff for their commitment to excellence in stroke care provided at the hospital.

In 2013, Spalding Regional Hospital received the Gold Plus Quality Achieve-ment Award from the American Heart Association, for both Heart Failure and Stroke. The rec-ognition signifies that Spalding Regional has reached an exceptional goal of treating both heart failure and stroke patients according to the guidelines of care recommended by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology.

This marked the fourth year that Spalding Regional has been recognized with a quality achievement award from the prestigious AHA.

Most recently, the Georgia Hospital Association’s Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) has named Spald-ing Regional Hospital in their prestigious Elite Circle for accomplishments in patient safety for both 2012 and 2013.

The Elite Circle is the highest category in GHA’s Hos-pital Engagement Network’s recognition program, plac-ing Spalding Regional in the 90th percentile or above of GHA’s Hospital Engagement Network.

Several of Spalding Regional’s other specialty services also received recognition in 2012. The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer granted a three-year accredita-tion “with commendation” to the Cancer Program at Spalding Regional Hospital.

The commendation followed the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor for the commission during which Spalding Region-al demonstrated a high level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program.

These standards included clinical services, community outreach, quality improvement, hospital cancer committee leadership, cancer data management and research.

Spalding Regional’s Imaging and Radiol-ogy Services also received accreditation from the American College of Radiology in five separate areas in 2012 for their specialties with, Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Nuclear Medicine, Computed Tomography (CT) and Ultrasound services.

“These recognitions are validation of the work that our staff does every day to improve the quality and safety of the care we provide to our patients,” Quinn said. ▼

Most recently, the Georgia Hos-pital Association’s Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) has named Spalding Re-gional Hospital in their prestigious Elite Circle for ac-complishments in patient safety for both 2012 and 2013.

With a location about 35 miles south of Atlanta and a short drive from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Griffin-Spalding County strives to pro-vide the right services and access needed for a successful, competi-tive economy.

Evolving from its beginnings as a center for textile companies, the area now has a diversified em-ployer base of light manufacturing and assembly, high-tech industry,

research and development. This was accomplished by a strong pro-business attitude, relatively low land cost, a qualified labor force along with the appropriate support infrastructure.

The Griffin-Spalding Develop-ment Authority offers land for companies to grow in its publicly owned industrial parks as well as in other sites across the county. Southern Crescent Technical Col-lege is the area’s home for Georgia Quick Start, the state’s workforce education program. World-class

research for the food and agricul-tural communities is provided by the University of Georgia’s Griffin Campus. The campus also now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to those who want to stay right here.

Concentrating on education of its young people and the train-ing of its workforce, along with incentives for businesses, Griffin-Spalding County has positioned itself to be competitive in the global economy for the present and future. ▼

Griffin community and is committed to providing students with high quality, personable instruction from world-re-nowned faculty in a small classroom set-ting. Many UGA-Griffin students have the opportunity to work on campus and perform cutting-edge research. Students transferring to the Griffin campus must have completed at least 60 hours of transferable coursework and must satisfy GPA requirements set by the admissions office. The campus also offers gradu-ate degree programs in mathematics education, agricultural leadership and workforce education. Two undergradu-ate degree programs — interdisciplinary studies with psychology concentration and interdisciplinary studies with sociol-ogy concentration — were added last fall through the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences that offer students a strong

foundation for graduate programs in areas of criminal justice or public administration. A new student affairs leadership graduate degree program also is available for mid-level adminis-trators in college student affairs - in a blended online and classroom format - through the College of Education.

The University of Georgia is ac-cepting applications for summer and fall semesters. The application dead-line for summer semester at the Griffin campus is May 1. Applications for fall semester are due by July 15.

Consistently ranked as one of the best universities in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s list of the top public campuses in America, UGA is considered one of the best values among 100 public colleges and uni-versities in Kiplinger’s magazine. Griffin-Spalding County Schools are daring to do better!

GSCS

When the Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education developed a new mission state-

ment, members deliberately chose the word char-acter-based to describe the education they wanted to provide. They feel strongly that academics are enhanced by a focus on character building. The school system practices character education in its principles each day. Staff and students hear a focus word of the day and a message about using that word in life.

An example from the program Project Wisdom would be the word compassion. The teacher or principal reads, “’There never was any heart truly great and generous that was not also tender and compassionate,’ said poet Robert Frost.” It feels so good to share a side-splitting laugh, or love or good fortune. But what about when others are go-ing through difficult times, times of suffering and sadness? Are we as quick to share then? That is when truly great and generous people show tender-ness and concern.

“Maybe life has been very difficult for a family member, friend or student. Consider this: You can be the one person who makes all the difference in the world. Simply hold the other person’s suffering as if it were your own. That’s how empathy works. Then be a big-hearted person by easing a little suf-fering with some tenderness and compassion.”

Griffin’s own Orrs Elementary School earned the National School of Character Award because of accomplishments its school community has made over several years. Students with character help build a better Griffin and Spalding County.

students had increases in all three areas of

the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). This

year, 260 GSCS students took the SAT and

were tested in critical reading, math and

writing.

GSCS students increased critical reading

from 445 to 452. Math scores went from 441

434 to 435. Total scores are determined by

adding the three component scores giving

GSCS students an average score of 1331.

High schools offer SAT prep sessions to

students at no cost. These scores give our

district an indication of the success of our

college prep instruction.

Graduation RatesData from 2011-2013 shows the local

school system is moving up each year in its

graduation rate. The district moved from

58.2 percent in 2011 to 63.88 percent in

2012 to 66.63 percent in 2013.

Among the changes made in GSCS to

help improve graduation rates is an increase

of performance by students. Teachers and

students can then make adjustments that

will enable students to excel.

In 2013, the 459 GSCS graduates earned

Arts & CultureGriffin and Spalding County continues growing their

community for the arts, from ballet to choral music, and from drama to fine arts and crafts.

The Griffin Area Arts Alliance is an umbrella or-ganization for the arts. It was a catalyst in restoring the 1,100-seat Griffin Auditorium, which hosts many performing groups as well as the Griffin Area Concert Association’s four-concert series featuring international guest artists.

The Griffin Ballet Theatre offers a first-rate annual production of “The Nutcracker” and other performances throughout the year.

Two theatre groups, Camelot Theatre Company and the Main Street Players, put on theatrical productions showcasing local performers’ talents throughout the year. Camelot Kids allow young hopefuls to express their creativeness and talents on the stage.

For music enthusiasts and performers, the Griffin Choral Arts and Griffin School for the Arts sponsor several programs and concerts throughout the year.

The Griffin Regional Welcome Center, in downtown Griffin, is home to the Griffin/Spalding Art Associa-tion’s Art Gallery. This local venue allows local artists to display and sell their work. The Association also funds a scholarship for a graduating high school senior.

There are several annual community-wide events that draw people from surrounding areas.

The Kiwanis Spalding County Fair in October at-tracts both the young and the young at heart to view local exhibits and the excitement of the midway rides and games.

The Annual Great Griffin Mayfling Arts and Crafts Festival held the last weekend in April, is sponsored by the Griffin/Spalding Chamber of Commerce. The event attracts a variety of quality artists and craftsmen to display and sell their goods. Top local entertainment is ongoing during the two-day event held in the shady surroundings of Griffin’s City Park.

Local clubs and organizations take advantage of the Festival to raise money for local charitable programs and projects. The festival is for everyone as children enjoy games and activities and friends and families enjoy good food and renew and establish friendships in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Griffin Downtown Council sponsors an old-fash-ioned Christmas. Festivities include a downtown open house with tasty treats such as hot cider and popcorn along with crafts, and of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

The Griffin/Spalding Chamber of Commerce helps to get everyone in the holiday spirit with its annual Christ-mas Parade in December. The streets are filled with onlookers as the parade participants proudly maneuver their decorated floats along the route. Bands supply seasonal music while many groups, organizations and individuals add to this festive activity. Santa provides the finale to the delight of all children.

Spalding County Parks and Recreation holds a tree lighting, entertainment, games, and a visit from Santa Claus at Airport Road Park to help begin the holiday season.

The Main Street Players offer performances throughout the year.

Rides and attractions make the Kiwanis Fair a popular destination every fall.

ATTRACTIONS 43

HistoryGriffin and Spalding County residents are proud of the

area’s rich and colorful history that has played a major role in the shaping of Georgia.

Spalding County was named for Thomas Spalding, con-sidered by many to be Georgia’s Benjamin Franklin. He was a prominent figure in agriculture, politics, and bank-ing. His name was immortalized in 1851 by awarding it to our newly-formed county.

Prior to the founding of Spalding County, Griffin was established by Gen. Lewis Lawrence Griffin when he chose an ideal location for a town along his Monroe Railroad’s north-south route. Although the major emphasis eventu-ally shifted instead to the town of Terminus (later called Martha’s Station and finally renamed Atlanta) to the north, the original plan’s design was sound.

Perhaps one of Spalding County’s most famous residents was John Henry “Doc” Holliday. Born in Griffin in 1851, he was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Griffin. Af-ter receiving a degree from Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, he moved back to Georgia and had a successful practice in downtown Griffin before tuberculosis forced him to move West. He died in 1887 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

The original Spalding County Courthouse, built in 1859, is still standing on the southwest corner of Broad and 5th streets. Though it is no longer used as the county seat of government, the building is one of Georgia’s few

antebellum courthouses. It is now home to the University of Georgia’s Extension Service’s local offices.

All of Griffin and Spalding County’s historic events did not occur a century ago. Twelve local community heroes carried the Olympic torch along the route traversing Geor-gia and Spalding County leading up to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. As an integral part of the 1996 celebration, Griffin native Wyomia Tyus, an Olympic gold medalist in 1964 and 1968, was honored by having the county’s newest park named after her.

While Griffin and Spalding County has a history of which local residents are justifiably proud, tomorrow’s his-tory is being written today and is building on its successful story.
