Happy new year!It has been over a year since we extended

our invitation to Greg Mortenson to address The Richmond Forum this season. From the very beginning we envisioned this as an inspiring program to kick off the new year, and we were very pleased to find an early January date that worked for both Greg and The Forum.

Little did we know back then that the timing of this program would be so fortuitous, not only as an inspiring program for the new year, but as a program straight from today’s headlines. A year ago, Afghanistan had all but disappeared from U.S. media coverage and public discussion. Now, the spotlight is back on that troubled region as President Obama has committed 30,000 additional troops, while simultaneously circling a date on the calendar for the beginning of American troop withdrawals in July 2011. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Clinton and Defense Secretary Gates have both been speaking to the additional need for a “civilian surge,” recognizing that military force alone cannot affect lasting change on the ground in the region.

So with Afghanistan back in the headlines, and the debate swirling about the Obama administration’s approach, tonight we will have the unique opportunity to hear the thoughts of Greg Mortenson who, stone by stone, has been affecting real change in Pakistan and Afghanistan since 1993. He has done so by focusing his efforts in the area’s most remote villages and by deploying a single strategy over and over again—build schools so the children can be educated, especially the girls.

Last summer, past Richmond Forum speaker Tom Friedman accompanied Admiral Mike Mullen, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to a ribbon cutting ceremony opening one of Greg’s schools in Afghanistan. Friedman wrote in his column about how moved he was by the occasion. (“Teacher, Can We Leave Now? No.”– The New York Times, July 19, 2009)

“I still don’t know if this Afghan war makes sense anymore. I was dubious before I arrived, and I still am. But when you see two little Afghan girls crouched on the front steps of their new school, clutching tightly with both arms the notebooks handed to them by a U.S. admiral—as if they were their first dolls—it’s hard to say: ‘Let’s just walk away.’ Not yet.”

Tonight we’ll gain more insight into the world behind the headlines, and we’ll also gain some insight into Greg Mortenson himself. All of us, throughout our lives, see people in despair and situations that cry out for solutions. But how many of us take it upon ourselves to provide the solution? Especially halfway around the world. What started as a rather rash promise to build one school has turned into a life’s mission—one that has now touched the lives of over 58,000 students.

It’s an amazing story; and proof that one person really can change the world.

The objective of Greg Mortenson’s 1993 attempt to climb the world’s second highest mountain, K2 in Pakistan, was to honor the memory of his sister, who had died a year earlier of cerebral epilepsy. He planned to place her favorite necklace at the summit, but that never happened. Forced to turn back 2,000 feet from the summit, he became separated from his climbing partners. Lost and exhausted, he stumbled down a glacier and into a small village called Korphe, where he was warmly received and nursed back to strength. The experience would prove to be a life-changing event for Mortenson and for children in remote parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan—especially girls. No doubt, his message tonight will be inspiring for everyone in the audience.

In his first book Three Cups of Tea, co-authored with David Oliver Relin, Mortenson chronicles the details of his stay in Korphe—and how a young girl asked that he come back someday and build a school that even she could attend; and how three years later, he did just that despite his own limited means. To date he has led the building of more than 130 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan through his non-profit Central Asia Institute (CAI). Mortenson’s book became a New York Times bestseller and won numerous international awards. The U.S State Department designated Three Cups of Tea a must-read book, and it is required reading for U.S. Special Forces deploying to Afghanistan, where having good relations with tribal and village leaders is essential.

CAI schoolhouses are currently educating more than 58,000 students—three-quarters of them girls. The mission has not been without its perils in a part of the world where teaching girls to read and write is often taboo and the education of boys is frequently in the hands of religious

extremists. Mortenson has had two religious judgments—fatwas—issued against him. He was kidnapped and held for eight days in the Waziristan region of Pakistan. One CAI school was fired on by militants. As CAI presses forward with new schools—especially in Taliban territory—the risks continue, yet Mortenson remains committed to the effort he began to fight ignorance and poverty and to empower women through education. He sees that effort as vital to creating prosperity and peace in places that have seldom known those.

Born in St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1957, Mortenson spent his childhood in northern Tanzania, where his parents were missionaries and educators. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1975 to 1977. He graduated in 1983 from the University of South Dakota with an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. In 2008, he received Pakistan’s highest civilian award and in 2009 he was among the nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize, and U.S. News & World Report magazine named him one of America’s Top Twenty Leaders.

Mortenson lives in Montana with his wife, Dr. Tara Bishop, a clinical psychologist, and their two children. His new book, Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace With Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, came out in December.

Noor Wodjouatt, a native of Kabul, Afghanistan, performs Afghan-inspired music featuring Kathak dance for audiences around the world.

Mr. Wodjouatt came to the United States from France in 1990. He studied classical music with his cousin Wali Raoufi (a pupil of the famous Indian musician Ustad Ali Akbar Khan), violinist/vocalist Ustad Dilshad Khan and vocalist Bibi Amerjai Rathore, in addition to learning music from his brother, Bassir.

In 1990, Mr. Wodjouatt released the album City of Love, which continues to garner international acclaim. His style of singing is considered light ghazal, an ancient form of music and poetic recitation that dates back to the 10th century and he uses lyrics from Rumi, which date back to the 13th century.

Mr. Wodjouatt has led his ensemble in performances at the Dance Festival of India, the Asian Pacific American Heritage Reception, The Washington (D.C.) Folk Festival, Syracuse

University, and TAFT School. Last year, Mr. Wodjouatt performed for international TV stations. He was the first Afghan performer at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and the U.S. Department of State.

The Noor Wodjouatt Ensemble consists of vocals and lyrics performed by Mr. Noor Wodjouatt, instrumentals performed by Mr. Broto Roy, Master of Tabla, and Mr. Bassir Wodjouatt playing the rubab. The ensemble is accompanied by Kathak dance (a classical Indian dance that is used for the interpretation and storytelling of poetry) performed by Ms. Lori (Yasmeena) Clark.

Tonight’s musical performance is made possible by the generous support of Moore Cadillac Company.

Educate Girls, Change the World

By Karin Ronnow

Greg Mortenson and his Central Asia Institute have been promoting education, especially for girls, in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan for 16 years—yet not a day goes by that someone doesn’t ask Mortenson if he’s not tempting fate by emphasizing girls’ education.

The short answer is rarely. Most of the extremists’ attacks occur in places where CAI schools are not.

The long answer is yes, in some places where CAI is working, security is dicey. But from the get-go, CAI staffers spend a lot of time drinking tea and building relationships with local leaders to ensure complete commitment to every school.

“In order to get things done, we often have to deal with a lot of shady people,” Mortenson said. “We have to have tea with the Taliban and corrupt government officials, the U.S. military

and the visionary imams, and with the despot mullahs who are opposed to education and literacy.

“It’s all in a day’s work to get the job done and insure that the need to get kids in school is met,” he said.

Many cups of tea and sometimes years later, a school is established and there is no doubt about who owns it—the village does. So when threats do crop up, villagers protect those schools with their lives.

Only one CAI school has ever been attacked by the Taliban, two years ago in Afghanistan. The attackers were shot at, some killed and some arrested, and the girls were back in school within two days. The local police who guard the school now operate under a shoot-to-kill order regarding any militants who threaten a student or teacher.

There is an African proverb I

learned as a child in Tanzania,

‘If you educate a boy, you educate

an individual. But if you educate

a girl, you educate a community.’

– Greg Mortenson

Page 16: Greg Mortenson at The Richmond Forum

“It’s not how I’d run a school,” Mortenson said. “But it’s not my school. It’s theirs.”

Education is the most powerful weapon

which you can use to change the world.

– Nelson Mandela

As for why it’s important to take the risk and build girls’ schools at all, Mortenson said it’s simple. “That is the universal request we hear from women and communities: ‘We want schools.’”

But the barriers that keep girls in poor countries out of school are numerous and, in some cases, deeply entrenched.

In Pakistan and Afghanistan, where female literacy rates are at 36 and 13 percent, respectively, according to “The World Factbook,” extremists are the most vocal and violent obstructionists. They attack, bomb and burn girls’ schools, throw acid in female students’ faces and threaten anyone who dares to challenge their edicts to keep women out of public life.

Girls’ education is haram, or unIslamic, they say.

But Mortenson said, “Islamic scholars have told me that there is nothing in the Koran to prohibit girls’ education.”

Experience has taught him that this opposition is rooted not in theology, but in the extremists’ recognition that poor, illiterate communities are far more vulnerable to Taliban offers of money and martyrdom than communities where families are fighting hard to educate their children. After all, educated girls grow up to be educated women who are less likely to let their children join violent extremist movements.

In the Hadith, which is the teachings of Islam, it says, “The ink of a scholar is holier than the blood of a martyr.” In other words, “Their greatest fear is not the bullet, but it’s the pen,” he said.

) ““They fear that if the girl gets an education, grows up and becomes a mother, they’ll lose future recruits.”

But in these countries, where religion informs almost every aspect of daily life, a growing number of religious leaders are working hard to counter the extremists’ anti-female rhetoric. Syed Hassan Shah, principal of the Federal Government InterCollege Shigar, in Baltistan, Pakistan, is one such leader.

“According to Islam, until women are educated, no good society can be developed,” Shah said. “Islam says that education is for both boys and girls and there should be no difference, there should be opportunity for both of them. Another teaching of Islam is that every person should get an education and learning—even if he has to go to China.”

When he was starting the college, parents were more than willing to send their boys. Girls were another story. So to help recruit female students, he enlisted the help of his eldest daughter, Tahreem Fatima, who was studying in class 12 in Skardu.

“Nobody was willing to send the girls to the boys’ college, so she came to college for one year with the boys,” Shah said. “She made a big sacrifice. It was difficult for her. But I am a religious leader, so other parents saw that and said, ‘Let us send our daughters also.’”

His strategy worked.

I believe that women everywhere share

the same dreams: to be educated, to

live in peace, to enjoy good health, to

be prosperous and to be heard. And,

of course, these dreams start with the

education of girls. – Laura Bush

Religion, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Many, many things conspire to keep girls out of school in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

marry later, have fewer children and those children are less likely to die. Educated girls also contribute to family income, insist their own children are educated, and lead healthier lives.

“We can drop bombs, we can build roads, we can put in electricity, but unless the girls are educated, the world won’t change,” Mortenson said.

Conveying that message to parents, Shah said, has become less onerous over time.

“There is already a big difference and the difference is good and positive,” he said. “We still have to teach the religious people. And there might be, in the mountains or other places, some people who don’t understand. But people are seeking better and better opportunities for their girls, so the change is very good.”

Reprinted with permission from “Journal of Hope, Vol. III,” published by CAI. Complimentary copies of the full publication are available in the theater tonight.

Poverty, for example, also informs all aspects of life for millions in this region. Subsistence living means families often need girls at home to help in the fields, herd livestock or tend to younger siblings. The cost of school fees, books and uniforms sometimes requires families to choose between sending sons or daughters to school, and the boys are often seen as the better choice, due to their ability to get paid work and contribute to the household income down the road.

Another barrier to girls’ education is distance. Sometimes the schools that accept girls are just too far away. Parents aren’t comfortable having their daughters walk alone for hours each way in rural areas, especially in war zones.

And then there are the seemingly obvious but often overlooked aspects of the need for privacy and safety at the schools themselves. Parents may not say it, but they want their girls to go to schools with boundary walls and private toilets, especially adolescent girls. And, due to fear of sexual harassment or even violence, they steer clear of schools that employ only male teachers.

Knowledge is power. Information is

liberating. Education is the premise of

progress, in every society, in every family.

– Kofi Annan

When CAI joins with a village to address those concerns and get girls enrolled in school, the outcome is girls who lead richer, more productive lives, contribute to the health and welfare of their families and grow up to raise educated, healthier children.

“In short, there may be no better investment for the health and development of poor countries around the world than investments to educate girls,” according to the Council on Foreign Relations’ What Works in Girls’ Education: Evidence and Policies from the Developing World.

Research has proven that educated girls www.rainbowstation.org

I love to read. At a very young age I discovered the joy of being transported to other lands, cultures and planets. Words can take me places that my

physical body can never go. Every book is a new adventure and every story is a vicarious opportunity to live another life.

Books can entertain, teach and inspire. Sometimes a book can do all three as I

found when I read Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea. I was enthralled by Mortenson’s journey from mountain climber to third-world educator. Mortenson discovered Pakistani and Afghani children who yearned to go to school and learn but lacked the opportunity, the facilities and supplies to receive an education. In the book Mortenson chronicles his quest to fund and build schools for these neglected children.

As part of his fundraising effort, Mortenson established Pennies for Peace. The program enables students to help finance the building of Pakistani and Afghani schools by collecting small change they donate to a school-building project. After reading Three Cups of Tea I was both moved and excited about starting a Pennies for Peace fundraiser at my high school. I enlisted the help of two friends and we began our philanthropic adventure.

Much like Mortenson’s journey we encountered a bureaucracy to surmount before we could begin our work. Our first task was to find a sponsor who would lend credibility to our efforts and oversee the fundraiser. Then we had to gain permission from our principal who needed

to sanction the project. The final task was raising awareness within the school for the plight of the Afghani and Pakistani children. Convincing our schoolmates that their pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters could make a difference proved to be the most difficult aspect of our project. We very quickly discovered that most of the school did not share our passion and commitment to this cause. We needed to generate interest and enthusiasm in order for our fellow students to part with their pocket change.

I began by making daily pitches over the PA system during morning announcements. Knowing firsthand how most students sleep through or ignore these morning broadcasts, it was important to be engaging and persuasive. I did my best to supplicate with humor and sincerity. My committee also decorated donation cans that were placed strategically at the end of the lunch lines in the cafeteria. In spite of our best efforts, empty cans awaited us at the end of each day.

After a month of minimal success, we decided it was time to promote Pennies for Peace in a different and hopefully more effective way. In order to create friendly competition among the classes to encourage giving, we arranged a reward for the first period class that raised the most money in one week. The winners would receive a “move to the front of the line” lunch pass for the following week. With this new incentive our classmates suddenly discovered their generous inner selves. Each morning my committee and I would go to the first period classes to collect the change. While we were there we would emphasize how much more the other classes were giving, hoping that students would throw in more coins.

At the end of the week we faced the most tedious, yet rewarding part of the project—counting all the change we had collected. Our almost ten hours of counting included some tears, temper outbursts and many miscalculations, but we finally added it all up. All of our planning, cajoling and collecting paid off: we raised over $1,000 for Greg Mortenson’s Pennies for Peace.

I have played sports since kindergarten and succeeded scholastically and personally; however, the satisfaction and pride from those accomplishments cannot compare with the euphoria I felt with the work that I did for Pennies for Peace. Three Cups of Tea not only entertained but it ignited in me a desire to help

and made me realize that the education that I always considered an entitlement, is actually a privilege. We may not have raised enough money to build a school, but we did collect enough to provide a number of children with textbooks and supplies. It has been an honor for me to work for a cause that enables a child in Afghanistan or Pakistan to have what I have taken for granted for 12 years. One person can make a difference, and this time I was that person.

Trinity Episcopal School advocates service to one’s community as an important aspect

of individual character development and as an essential element in the creation of a strong

community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as ushers

for The Richmond Forum this season. Through their service, the students facilitate an exchange of

ideas that broadens our understanding of the trends and issues shaping our lives and our community.

THE RICHMOND FORUM WELCOMES THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF TRINITY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL IN A SPECIAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO CONNECT THE CLASSROOM, THE COMMUNITY AND CURRENT EVENTS.

IN ACADEMICS

We discover what motivates students and use that knowledge to challenge them

IN THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

Academics with a world view provide a competitive curriculum in a dynamic environment

IN THE COMMUNITY

We celebrate the differences that make us individuals and the common ground that makes us a community

FRONTLINEThe Dancing Boys of Afghanistan

Tuesday, January 19 at 10 pm

In Afghanistan today, in the midst of war and endemic poverty, an

ancient tradition–banned when the Taliban were in power–has

re-emerged across the country. Many hundreds of boys, often as young

as ten, are being lured off the streets on the promise of a new life,

many unaware of their real fate.

We do them in communities. Schools. Small businesses. And a lot of other areas. You see, at Capital One, we believe that the more our people volunteer their time, expertise and financial resources, the more everyone benefits. After all, while a lot of important work goes on inside our offices, just as much goes on outside them. Capital One is proud to support The Richmond Forum.

As campaign manager for Barack Obama, David Plouffe is credited with building the most innovative presidential campaign in U.S. history, boldly using Internet-based technologies to set new records for fundraising and grass roots mobilization. Now he brings to The Forum his perspective on the future of the American democratic process in a world of Tweeting senators, blogging constituents, social networks for every special interest and policy position, and untold new ways for administrations to communicate directly with citizens. Plouffe will explore how these new technologies could reshape the political process in America.

In 2000, Plouffe joined the political consulting firm AKP&D Message and Media—founded by Obama campaign colleague David Axelrod—and became a partner in the firm in 2004. Plouffe’s book on the 2008 presidential election, The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama’s Historic Victory was released in November.
