BERLINDating back to 1846 when Nathan Strongand his surveying crew were sent out todetermine the best central location forcrossing the Fox River between Fond duLac and Stevens Point, Strongsville, aplace now known as Berlin, was founded.By 1848 a ferry was operating, and in1857, the railroad connection fromMilwaukee via Ripon opened, beginningBerlin’s growth. Expansion continued,helped by farming, trading, quarrying andmanufacturing, and Strong named thegrowing community Berlin.

RIPONThe friendly and inviting City of Ripon isan active community set among historicbuildings and well-preserved architecturefrom the late 19th century. Ripon holds aspecial place in our nation’s past; it is thebirthplace of the Republican Party, but italso enjoys the present and welcomes thefuture.

The Little White Schoolhouse, built in1853 and now a National HistoricLandmark, stands as a witness to thecreation of a national movement thatbegan when three existing political partiesjoined together on March 20, 1854 tocreate the Republican Party. The small,yet humble, structure is open for visitorsto view artifacts, learn more about Ripon,or to glimpse what school life was like forchildren in the 1850s.

City streets are dotted with several eye-catching Victorian houses known asPainted Ladies. These colorful homesbring to mind an era of grace andgentility. The bustling downtown featuresa variety of businesses in buildings witharchitecture dating back to the 1860s,which allows the character and charm ofthese structures to enhance the shoppingor dining experience.

Several events throughout the year drawlocals and visitors alike. The VillageGreen Concert Series is a summertimefavorite; the live musical performances onFriday nights are a wonderful way toconnect with neighbors and friends whilelistening to jazz, rock, polka, country oracoustic music. Hay Days opens thesummer with a glimpse into Ripon’spioneer era. Cookie Daze is a familyfestival that ends the summer with crafts,clowns, kid-made rockets and, of course,cookies. Each year locals and visitors enjoy thegreat tradition of the Green LakeCounty Junior Free Fair. That’s

right – it’s free. No admission charge orparking fees. During the first weekend ofAugust, local 4-H youth gather at theGreen Lake County Fairgrounds in GreenLake to compete for blue ribbons,trophies and bragging rights in variouscategories including pie baking,photography, woodworking and animalshowing. There are open categories forthose not in 4-H who wish to compete.

Four days of fun, family entertainmentappeal to all. Check out the animals–rabbits, chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep,goats, horses, cows, cats and dogs. Watchas young people show the animals theyhave raised and judges determine who will

go on to the State Fair in Milwaukee, thenwatch the livestock auction that follows.The exhibition building displays projectsdemonstrating creativity and talent.

Listen to live entertainment, enjoy acarnival ride or play a game as you walkthe midway, or sit down and take in someeducational programs. Experience a trackevent such as a truck and tractor pull, anATV race or a demolition derby – for asmall admission charge. Tuscumbia, theoldest golf course in Wisconsin, is one ofthe best-manicured courses in the statewith stately evergreens in a park-likesetting and a new log clubhouse. Finally,White Lake Golf Resort features anunusual western style with naturallandscaping sprawling over 200 acres.Peacocks roam the course and theadjoining vacation resort and supper club.

Autumn brings crisp air, the sound ofleaves crunching underfoot, and hunters tothe area. Wildlife abounds, and whitetaildeer, turkey, bear, pheasants and waterfowlcreate a sportsman’s paradise. Public landmakes hunting accessible to all.

And when winter turns tospring, they can play Frisbee golf thereand at many of the other beautiful parks.The aquatic center, with its 170-foot longwater slide and zero-depth entry, is sure tobe a hit as well. Local campgrounds alsocater to families with pools and activitiesfor the youngsters.

Public schools in the Berlin Area SchoolDistrict include Clay LambertonElementary School (K-5), Berlin MiddleSchool (6-8) and Berlin High School (9-12). Their vision is to create qualitystudents with a global perspective, educatedto their fullest potential, and respectful toall. With a motto of “Children: Our firstpriority,” they emphasize the formation ofstrong relations with parents and thecommunity to aid in preparing children tocompete in the 21st century marketplace.The 2011-2014 Strategic Plan will guidethe district in providing a comprehensiveeducational program that stresses lifelonglearning and successful occupational, civicand personal growth. For decades, most peopleassociated America’s smalltowns with one-roomschoolhouses, and, true tothat image, Green Lake isa ‘one-roof ’ schoolhouse.Students from 4-year-oldkindergarten through 12thgrade attend school in thesame building,encouraging a family-friendly, community

atmosphere. With the challenges of a newworld economy, Green Lake has chosen tobecome the first 4K–12 InternationalBaccalaureate World School in Wisconsin.IB encourages a deeper understanding ofsubjects and active participation in thelearning process. The district also recentlyadopted the Earth Partnership in Schools,integrating outdoor activities into allclasses. Connecting students with the lakeand its place in the world, The Green LakeGlobal and Environmental Academy—alake-centered charter school—opened in2008 to 7-8 grade students.

Markesan is a rural district whose citizenshave been strong supporters of publiceducation, passing a referendum in 1998to build a new high school addition andto remodel the former high school as amiddle school. Markesan District Schoolsare “opening doors for kids.” MarkesanElementary School and the combinedMarkesan Middle/High School offer state-of-the-art technology facilities andresources to assist students in becoming

The Princeton Public School Districteducates children from pre-kindergartenthrough 12th grade. The district makescommunity and family involvement amajor priority, and the community viewsthe school as a gathering place. Small classsizes, classroom collaboration betweengrade levels and strong curriculum helpedearn Princeton a two-time School ofPromise Award. Students can participatein multiple extracurricular activities, andhands-on learning at school forests, giftedand talented programs, and non-traditional and specialized learningopportunities give children the chance toexcel. School-to-work programs,exploratory class offerings, a distance-learning lab and personalized careerguidance ensure that students will beprepared for the future. St. John theBaptist Catholic School provides a qualityCatholic education for children in 4-Kthrough 8th grade. Aside from the basiccurriculum, students attend religion,physical education, music and art classes.

The Ripon Area School District servesapproximately 1,800 students. The schooldistrict provides a half-day, 4-year-oldpreschool program at community sitesand K-12 classes at four newly built orremodeled schools. Ripon’s visionstatement affirms that, “as one ofWisconsin’s outstanding school districts,we are a vibrant, engaged community oflifelong learners that challenges andinspires students to reach their fullpotential, achieve success and contributeto the local and world communitythroughout their lives.” In addition to thepublic schools, the school district hasthree charter schools to provide morechoices for parents and students. The

Ripon Exploration and ApplicationCharter High (REACH) School is a 9-12grade school for hands-on learners.Crossroads Academy provides self-pacedlearning programs for at-risk, 6-12 gradestudents, and Quest Elementary School isa project-based learning charter school forstudents in grades 3-5.

Those looking for higher education neednot look far. Ripon College boasts astrong national academic reputation and isranked in the top 15 percent of colleges inthe nation by the Princeton Review.Moraine Park Technical College is nearbyin Fond du Lac with a regional center inRipon. They offer more than 100different career options, and classes aretaught by industry-experiencedinstructors. Also in Fond du Lac, the UW-Fond du Lac offers courses that are thebasis for more than 250 majors. Sixbuildings surround a two-acre lake, and a$13 million renovation was completed in2000, transforming the campus into astate-of-the-art facility.

In addition, the University of WisconsinCooperative Extension Service (UWEX)maintains an office in Green Lake Countyand is staffed by educators offeringprograms in Agriculture and NaturalResources, Community Development,Family Living and 4-H YouthDevelopment.
