-The green technology in building is mostly refer to the technology and applications to reduce impact to the Energy and Environmentrelated to building services

a) Design : Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy & Water Management.

b) Office appliances

c) Operation: Energy management in the O&M.

d) Renovation / retrofits

e) Other - Paper and water recycling

- Indoor air quality.

- Solid waste management / separation

Energy Efficient Lighting Control System

Suspended T5 Tube (2x) Up/down

300 – 400 lux level

- Lighting system are controlled by the Lighting Management System using DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) technology.

- Smart features & Integrated with Occupancy and Daylight Sensors.

a) Lights will OFF when nobody in the rooms.

b) Lights will OFF when enough daylight.

c) Easy to reconfigure during renovation without extensive physical wiring.-

Daylight Sensor -The brightness sensor (ranges from 1 to 20000 lux) can send switching signals through the EIB protocol to the actuators when the brightness exceeds or falls below a specified threshold.

Energy Efficient Office Equipment

• Laptop is the least energy consuming (1/4 only) in comparison to PCwith CRT monitor and PC with LCD monitor.

• 80 % of the PC used in the ZEO Building is laptop.• Less energy consumed and less heat generated thus save A/C energy.

Sharing Networked Printers

Most of the printing works are through the networked printers.

Benefits : a) Save energy – Reduce standby losses of the individual printers.b) Reduce printing time – No need to wait for printer to warming up and

waste energy.c) Save space – Clean and manageable workspace area.d) Easy maintenance – since number of printers are less.e) Cost effective – printing cost is lesser due to high performance

system.f) Others – Most networked printers (good one) have dual pages printing

capability, save paper.

Wireless IT Distribution Network

• 75% of the IT distribution network are wireless. Most laptops already have support WiFi feature.

Benefits : a) Mobility – Provide flexibility to officer to work anywhere in the building.b) Easy to manage – No complicated wiring on the floor / table.c) Save cost – less IT equipment (hubs / switches).d) Save energy – less IT equipment to operate and no additional

cooling system.

• Only 25% are networked through the structured cabling system (CAT5e).To support the critical / high end equipment such as servers, printers, fax.

High Temperature Server Room

• Server room operates at higher temperature room, 24 – 25 degC, still within the recommended operating temperature.

• Normal server rooms temperature are normally set at 19 –20 degC, which is normally recommended by IT consultants.

• Benefits : a) Save energy – Reduce energy for cooling.b) Prolog lifespan of cooling equipment – work less.c) Low maintenance cost – Less wear & tear due to less compressor loading.d) No need de-humidifier – No risk of condensation.e) Better working environment (not too cold) for the IT operators.

Building Management System

> Open protocol system : Using TCP-IP and LonWorks system

• Incorporate Building Automation System- Operate building services automatically especially the cooling system.- Reduce operation & maintenance time to operate the building.- Reduce troubleshooting time to rectify problems.

• Incorporate Energy Management System.- Records energy consumption.- Auto generate Building Energy Index (BEI) on daily and monthly basis.- Records energy generated by the Solar PV.- Records energy imported and exported to the grid (TNB).- Load apportioning, as input for energy audit analysis.- Temperature and humidity

• Can be access remotely via internet / intranet.- Save time for building manager to access from anywhere to monitor /

program the system.

Conclusion

Green IT development in Malaysia is still at the early stage. Greater efforts and promotion is required to ensure the success of development and implementation of Green Technology Policy in Malaysia.
