St Joseph’s Parish!!

On September 29, 1947, Bishop Bryan J McEn-tegart announced that Massena would have a new parish dedicated to St. Joseph and Msgr. Harold J. Skelly would be its first pastor. The new parish would be comprised of all the territory east of the Terminal Railroad and between the DeGrasse and Racquette rivers, to the boundary of St. Patrick’s parish in Hogansburg, NY. The first Mass was celebrated on Christmas in the Community Hall of the Project, and the Community Hall building was used for over a year.!

In November of that year Monsignor Skelly ap-plied for a surplus chapel from Camp Shanks, NY and purchased it for $1500.00. It was disassembled and trans-ported to Massena and erected on land donated by AL-COA on the corner of Bayley Rd and Malby Ave. (Unfortunately, many items were stolen from the building before it was dismantled many electrical items, and part of the furnace were taken.) In the fall of 1948, ground was broken for the new building and the first Mass in this newly erected building was celebrated on Christmas Eve of that year. Since the building was not completely fin-ished, parishioners could not have daily Mass so the car-penters and other workers could finish their work. !

On June 11, 1950, Bishop McEntegart blessed the new church building and remarked that the church was more than a meeting place for services but a classroom giving the authentic teachings of the church about the Kingdom of Heaven, the Christian Way of Life and the discipline needed to live that life. (to be continued)!

UNITED IN MARRIAGE!

Kelli Curran & Daniel Ramsey at Sacred Heart Church !

On Saturday September 9th !

As you can see from the front cover, we’re having a second col-lection this weekend to support recovery

efforts in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Catholic Charities has an extensive network of people serving all over the nation, in-cluding here in Northern NY. They have “boots on the ground” all the time in the stormaffected areas, and so they already have people in place and relationships established with networks of support for those in need. Therefore, our donations will be channeled through Catholic Charities in Ogdensburg, who will see to it that funds are disbursed efficiently and rapidly to Cath-olic Charities in those regions most in need. Last week, we got a bit of a “head start” with this, as members of the Witkop and Todd families pulled together a shortnotice bake sale at Sacred Heart. They raised about $600 and have already sent it to Cath-olic Charities great job! Keep up the good work, and thanks to all for your generosity in this week’s second collection.!

P P !!An integral part of our pastoral plan is to see that

the spiritual needs of our people are addressed in a way that makes the best use of our resources, and is tailored for the concrete situation of our day. With this in mind, and considering how busy so many families are throughout the weekend during the school year, we will soon be offering a seasonal Sunday evening Mass starting the week following Columbus Day and running through the winter until Palm Sunday. We have an en-thusiastic group of teenagers and young adults who have begun planning and will be rehearsing in order to provide music ministry for that Mass. If anyone is in-terested in offering assistance for Mass at that time (singers, instrumentalists, greeters, ushers, altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, sacris-tans, lectors, etc.), please let us know! Just call the par-ish office, or send us a note online with our parish web form at https://massenacatholics.com/contactus!

Life and Choice !“’Choice’ is a positive concept, and an attractive concept. That’s why abortion apologists use it. But the way they use it is a lie and, increasingly, Americans are catching on. There is hope in this development….. Increasingly, Americans are recognizing what a moral evil is embodied in Roe. Increasingly, they are aware of the vast network of lies that have been spun and fortified to sustain the illusion that abortion is somehow a good, or at least a morally neutral procedure; that it is a standard part of health care and family planning; that it is a proper exer-cise of a woman’s freedom; that it is a solution to intrac-table social problems. It is, of course, none of these things. What it is, is an unfettered right to take an inno-cent, human life from the mother’s womb. All this, more and more Americans are coming to know.” !!!Cardinal

William H. Keeler, Former Archbishop of Baltimore January 23, 2005, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate

Conception

September 8, 2017!The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

!Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:!!! In honor of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima and in supplication for our Lady’s intercession for the Diocese of Ogdensburg, I will consecrate our Diocese of Og-densburg to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Sunday, October 22, at St. Mary’s Cathedral.!!! The message of Fatima remains relevant to our times. It warns of the great calamities that befall humanity when we turn away from Jesus. The message makes promises of peace and joy beginning in this life and perfected in the next if humanity will only give its heart to its beloved Lord. The message of Fatima is one of great hope in the midst of the world’s seemingly hopeless turmoil because our Blessed Mother assures us that the Lord is anxious to provide the graces we so desperately need.!!! “Confirmed in this hope,” Pope Francis declared this May, “we…give thanks for the countless graces bestowed over these past hundred years. All of them passed beneath the mantle of light that Our Lady has spread over the four corners of the earth…” The Holy Father continues, “Dear Pilgrims, we have a mother. Clinging to her like children we live in the hope that rests in Jesus.”!!! This is my prayer for all the people of the North Country: Cling to Mary. Hope in Jesus. May the consecration of our Dio-cese help us all to live as faithful children of our Heavenly Moth-er! We will offer Mass in honor of Our Lady at 2:30 PM on Sun-day, October 22 at the Cathedral. Before Mass, at 2:00 PM, we will gather in our cathedral for a time of special prayer and reflec-tion as we pray the Rosary together.!!! To help us prepare for this holy event, I ask all the faithful of our Diocese to join me in praying a Novena during the nine days from the anniversary date of the last Fatima vision, October 13th to the day of Consecration on October 22nd. More infor-mation concerning the Novena and special Marian Mass will be sent to the parishes in the coming weeks.!!! What a wonderful way to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Dedication of our Cathedral, dedicated to our Blessed Lady! Please mark your calendar today and join me and many of our neighbors and friends for the Rosary and Mass as I consecrate our beloved Diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In the mean-time, please continue to join me in responding to her request that we pray the Rosary for peace and make sacrifices for sinners.!!! With much gratitude for your prayers and confident in the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin, I am!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! Faithfully yours in Christ,!
