This weekend we publish (as bulletin inserts) the first of our two parish financial and spiritual reports for the 201617 year, which ended on June 30th. After closing the books, balancing the accounts, and

doublechecking the figures, there’s still a chance we might have gotten a minor detail or two wrong. But I’m confident that these reports give us a good snapshot of our financial and spiritual state of affairs. Take a few minutes to look them over this week is the report for Sacred Heart & St. Lawrence, next week we’ll see the St. Mary’s & St. Joseph’s report. If you have a question or wish to see the detailed report for either parish’s financial accounts, you are welcome to call the Parish office at 3157692469 or email us at [email protected] we will do our best to answer your questions. ~Fr. LOUISVILLE, NY

(also known as Millerville)

In March of 1800, the Rev. Levi Miller, a licensed Methodist preacher found a piece of land cleared by previ-ous settlers and decided it would be an excellent place for a village and named it Millerville. The first settler was Nahun Wilson. Louisville was the eleventh town erected by an Act of Legislature on April 5, 1810. It was formerly under the jurisdiction of Massena, NY. Prior to the war of 1812, the inhabitants of Louisville were very friendly with the Cana-dians across the St. Lawrence River. During the War of 1812, the inhabitants became suspicious of each other until the necessities of life forced them to reestablish the good trade relations that existed before the War of 1812. The peo-ple on both sides of the river became good friends once again, even though their governments had declared them enemies. They made many secret trips across the great St. Lawrence River, not only for trading but for friendly visits as well. On October 2, 1869, John B. Whalen called a meeting of Catholics in the Town Hall. He became president of the group and Michael Power was secretarytreasurer. There were 64 Catholic families at the time, and it was decided that a Catholic church was needed. The parish was incorpo-rated in the same year, but the building was not ready until 1871. Against the advice of their pastor, the church was built at a cost of $7,350.00. The parishioners were hoping that once a church was built, they would have a resident pastor. Mass was celebrated every two weeks in private homes until the church was completed in 1871. It was made a mission of Madrid for 22 years, then was served by priest from Waddington, Norfolk and Massena. When Massena, Norfolk, and Millerville (Louisville) became independent parishes, St. Lawrence parish came under the jurisdiction of Massena with Rev. Edmund Walsh, of St. Peter’s Church in Massena as pastor.
