Just in case you haven’t heard, there’s an election coming up soon! In honor of that we thought we’d share a little Presidential trivia with you!

Barack Obama is our 44th President but there actually have only been 43 presidents. President Cleveland was elected for two nonconsecutive terms and is counted twice, as our 22nd and 24th president.

Eight presidents were born British subjects: Washington, J. Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams, Jackson and W. Harrison.

Nine presidents never attended college: Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Fillmore, Lincoln, A. Johnson, Cleveland and Truman. The college that has the most presidents as alumni (seven in total) is Harvard: J. Adams, J.Q. Adams, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Kennedy, G.W. Bush (business school) and Barack Obama (law school). Yale is a close second, with five presidents as alumni: Taft, Ford (law school), G.H.W. Bush, Clinton (law school) and G.W. Bush.

Presidents who would be considered “Washington outsiders” (presidents who never served in Congress) are: Washington, J. Adams, Jefferson, Taylor, Grant, Arthur, Cleveland, T. Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and G.W. Bush.

The most common religious affiliation among presidents has been Episcopalian, followed by Presbyterian.

The oldest elected president was Reagan (age 69), the youngest was Kennedy (age 43). Theodore Roosevelt, however, was the youngest man to become president – he was 42 when he succeeded McKinley, who had been assassinated.

The tallest president was Lincoln at 6’4” and Madison was the shortest at 5’4”.

Fourteen presidents served as vice presidents: J. Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren, Tyler, Fillmore, A. Johnson, Arthur, T. Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman, Nixon, L. Johnson, Ford and George H. W. Bush. Vice presidents were originally the presidential candidates receiving the second-largest number of electoral votes. The Twelfth Amendment, passed in 1804, changed the system so that the electoral college voted separately for president and vice president. The presidential candidate, however, gradually gained power over the nominating convention to choose his own running mate.

For two years the nation was run by a president and a vice president who were not elected by the people. After Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned in 1973, President Nixon appointed Gerald Ford as vice president. Nixon resigned the following year, which left Ford as president, and Ford’s appointed vice president, Nelson Rockefeller, as second in line.

Four candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888); Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George W. Bush (2000).

James Buchanan was the only president to never marry. Five presidents remarried after the death of their first wives – two of whom, Tyler and Wilson, remarried

while in the White House. Reagan was the only divorced president. Six presidents had no children. Tyler – father of fifteen – had the most.

Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were assassinated in office. Assassination attempts were made on the lives of Jackson, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Ford and Reagan. Eight presidents died in office: W. Harrison (after serving served only one month), Taylor, Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Harding, F. Roosevelt and Kennedy.

Presidents Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe all died on the 4th of July; Coolidge was born on that day. Kennedy and Taft are the only presidents buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Lincoln, Jefferson, F. Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, and Eisenhower are portrayed on U.S. coins.

Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Jackson, Grant, McKinley, Cleveland, Madison and Wilson are portrayed on U.S. paper currency.

STAYING HEALTHY & FIT with Julie

Do you have good balance or bad balance? Has your balance gotten worse lately? These are important questions to answer as balance tends to get worse as we age. The red flags for poor balance are:

1. You cannot walk in a straight line.2. You bump into things.3. You cannot balance on one leg, especially when putting on a pair of pants.4. You have trouble standing with your feet together while having your eyes closed. What causes poor balance to develop and what can you do about it?Poor vision is one of the leading causes of falls and poor balance but one of the easiest problems to fix. It’s very

important to schedule regular visits to an eye doctor. Eyes can change a lot as we age, causing spatial deterioration, not being able to read road signs or getting headaches from reading. Corrective lenses are an easy fix for our eyes. Aging also can cause macular degeneration, a very serious eye problem.

Another cause of poor balance could be neurological. If you feel lightheaded or develop vertigo you not only could fall but it could be a sign of a stroke, if it is sudden. Other potential causes of poor balance can be dementia, or Parkinson’s disease. Neuropathy of the feet is another source of poor balance issues. It is important to pay attention to balance problems and get a thorough checkup on a regular basis.

Thirdly, an inner ear disorder could cause poor balance. Our inner ear is very important to good balance. It gathers information relating to motion, equilibrium and spatial orientation and then sends that information to the brain. If you develop dizziness, spinning and nausea you could have an inner ear problem. Some of these issues are easily fixed and others may take some time.

Fourth, is poor sleep habits. A very powerful study has shown that brain function suffers dramatically when we don’t get enough sleep. The average person needs 6 – 9 hours of sleep a night. When sleep is poor our brain gets confused and does not send the proper signals to our muscles and can cause poor decision making and poor health.

Fifth, poor core strength and poor physical fitness are very common causes of poor balance. As we age our muscles deteriorate unless we consistently engage in an exercise program. The three most important exercises consist of strength training, cardiovascular exercise and stretching. The senior center offers an opportunity to participate in exercises that cover all of the basic exercises.

Falls are a very serious consequence of poor balance, so please make sure that you do everything you can to stay strong and balanced!

THANKSGIVING ACTIVITIES PLANNED!Two of our centers will have special activities in honor of Thanksgiving this month. Participants at the

North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will be on a turkey hunt this month. Turkeys have hidden in the center trying to save themselves from becoming Thanksgiving dinner! Our hunt will be held on Tuesday, November 1 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Find the hidden turkeys and win a special Thanksgiving prize! The North Granville center will also have a special Thanksgiving party on Wednesday, November 16 right after lunch. Come join us for sweet treats as we give thanks for all our many blessings!

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will hold their annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Friday, November 18 beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will be sponsored by Agape Worship Ministries. You MUST register for this event by calling the Senior Center at (919)528-0848. There will be lots of good food, fellowship and fun! NOVEMBER WATERCOLOR CLASS – WATERCOLOR CHRISTMAS CARDS

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is around the corner, but while we have some time, let’s create several watercolor cards for the holidays. I’m finding that folks who’ve received these hand-made cards in the past are saving them or even framing them! A watercolor card can be a special gift or your ‘signature’ card for the holiday. This watercolor class will use the holidays to focus on traditional watercolor techniques. Participants will not only have an opportunity to relearn or reinforce these techniques, but will go home with original cards to celebrate the season. This is an instruction-based, demonstration-application class. Watercolor techniques will be reviewed, reinforced through application, and demonstrated to insure painting success. This two-day workshop is recommended for those with watercolor experience. The techniques are easy enough for anyone who has taken a watercolor basics class or has watercolor experience. Participants will be responsible for bringing their own materials, but the instructor will provide several tools to enable participants to create as many different cards as time will allow. A list of recommended supplies will be sent upon registration. Classes will be held on Monday, November 7 and Monday, November 14 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The cost will be $50 per person. Please call Lin Frye at (919)693-1461 to reserve your spot. Registration fees are required five days prior to the first class. Space is limited!

RUMMIKUB & DOMINO CHALLENGE CONTINUESThe Rummikub and Domino players from the North Granville Senior Center in Stovall and the South

Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor are set to hold their final 2016 challenge! These centers will hold another Rummikub and Domino challenge on Friday, November 4 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the South Granville center. Participants from these two centers always look forward to this fun day. We’ll renew friendships, “challenge” each other in Rummikub and Dominos and see who comes home the champion! North Granville players will depart from the center in Stovall at 8:30 a.m. and will stop for lunch on the way home. If you enjoy these games and would like to join us please call the North Granville center at (919)693-3383 or the South Granville center at (919)528-0848 for more information. Even if you don’t play, join us and cheer on your “team.” Who will be the final 2016 champion?

CHECK OUT THIS SPECIAL HOLIDAY TRIP!

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor has a very special trip planned for December. We will be traveling to the Barn Dinner Theatre in Greensboro to see “How the Buckner Family Saved Christmas”. This show, a Barn Dinner Theatre favorite, is about a disillusioned department store Santa and his not-so-bright sidekick who try to ruin the Buckner family’s Christmas. Back by popular demand, this fast paced, slapstick comedy is sure to make your holiday season memorable! The cost for this trip will be $60.00 per person, which includes the ticket to the show, meal, gratuity and transportation. Sign up starts NOW! Payment is due in full when you sign up. This is a 1:00 p.m. show and we will be making a quick stop at Alamance Crossings on the way. Please call the senior center at (919)528-0848 to register. This is always a popular trip – call early!

Senior Services offers a day trip from one of our three senior centers each month. This month’s trip will be hosted by the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford.

SPECIAL SPEAKERS PLANNEDGranville County Senior Services tries very hard to keep our seniors informed and up-to-date with the latest

information on aging, community resources, health related information and other types of news that affects our participants. Check out these upcoming programs at our three senior centers.

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford has several programs scheduled for the month of November. On Tuesday, November 15th, Attorney Ajulo Othow, will be at the center to present “Wills and Estate Planning: Are you prepared?” Learn more about what each of these documents do and what happens if you don’t have them. This is important for all of us to have. Ms. Othow’s presentation will begin at 10:00 a.m.

On Wednesday, November 16th, Granville County Commissioner David Smith, will be at the senior center to hold an “Ask your Commissioner” program. We have invited Commissioner Smith to be with us to give participants a chance to ask questions about things going on in our county. If you would like to know more about how decisions are made in our county, please make plans to attend. This program will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will also hold special presentations this month. On Wednesday, November 9th a representative from the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern NC will be

at the North Granville center to talk about “Alzheimer’s Disease – Learn the Basics.” Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it’s time to learn the facts. This program will share the basics of memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Participants will learn information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment and much more. This program will begin at 11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, November 16, Stephanie McCullum, RD, LDN, Treatment Options Specialist with Fresenius Medical Care, will be at the North Granville center to present “Your Kidneys and You.” This program is designed to raise awareness among the general public about kidneys, the risk factors for kidney disease, and how to protect your kidneys. If you have kidney disease or have been told you are at risk for kidney disease this will be good information for you. This program will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will have two special programs in November. On November 9th, Anna Grace Chelko, RD, LDN, Clinical Nutrition Manager with Morrison’s, will be at

the center to talk to participants about “Food Safety.” With the holidays approaching and everyone making dishes to share with family and friends, learn why food safety is important. Get tips for grocery shopping, washing produce, food storage and safe cooking practices - good information for all of us who are getting ready to be in the kitchen more cooking for the holidays! This program will begin at 9:30 a.m.

On Monday, November 21st, Francine Davis, RN, will be at the center to talk with participants on “How to Beat the Holiday Blues.” We all can be a little blue during the holidays – you may be spending the first holiday without a friend or loved one who has passed away. Maybe you can’t be with family and friends this holiday season due to sickness or you can’t afford to travel this year. Maybe you’re overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle the holidays can bring. Most of us can overcome those blue feelings but sometimes someone just can’t. Ms. Davis will cover topics such as what are the holiday blues? Why does this occur? Who is the most vulnerable? And how is it managed? Learn ways not to let the blues ruin your holiday. This program will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Join us for one (or all) of these interesting programs!
