SENIOR SKILLS AND DRILLS

As you know by now, we will not be holding the Kerr-Tar Senior Games this year. We are looking forward to being back in 2022, but in the meantime the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department will be holding Senior Skills and Drills to keep you in practice for next year’s events. During the first three weeks of May, the recreation department will focus on one senior games activity and teach participants the rules and techniques for each event. This will be a great way to try out a new event you have been thinking about registering for but never have. All activities will be held at the Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson and will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. This is open to anyone 50 and older in Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance and Warren counties. There is a $2.00 per activity charge and registration is required. The schedule for May will be as follows:

Thursday, May 6 – Pickleball Thursday, May 13 – Bocce Thursday, May 20 – Croquet

If you are interested in participating, you can pick up a registration form at any of our three senior centers. Spots are limited, social distancing will be maintained and face masks are required. For more information, please contact Crystal Allen at (252)431-6091 or by email at [email protected].

THE THREE R’S FOR FRAUD The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will hold “The Three R’s for Fraud” program on Thursday, May 20 beginning at 11:00 a.m. This will be offered both in-person at the senior center or virtually. We are limiting the number in-person to 20. You must preregister by calling the center at (919)693-1930. If you would like to attend virtually please call to have the zoom link emailed to you. In this program, participants will learn the three “R’s” for investment fraud, charity scams and counterfeit prescriptions and goods. Recognition – raising awareness of the warning signs of fraud. Repel – providing screening tools now available to shield from the unscrupulous and respond – leveraging multiple resources to counter wrongdoing and raising awareness about why it’s so important. You will also hear more about the state’s Advance Health Care Directives Registry that can help give loved ones the gift of peace of mind. This is important information for everyone. We hear of fraud attempts every day - join us to learn more about how to protect yourself and your finances. Please call the senior center for more information.

Kathy’s KornerKathy’s KornerBy: Kathy May

Eating healthy is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. There are many different things to look at when thinking about eating healthy. One of those things to think about is the chemical exposure we get from consuming fruits and vegetables raised on farms that use traditional farming methods. By that, I mean we all need to be concerned about the risks involved in eating foods that are heavily sprayed with pesticides. The US Department of Agriculture publishes a list of conventionally grown foods most likely to contain pesticide residues. This list includes strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, and sweet bell peppers. These 12 items are known as the “dirty dozen” because it is difficult to get the pesticide off due to the thin skin covering. The chemicals just soak through to the inner flesh. It is suggested that you pick an organic option if available for these particular items. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, MD, who wrote a book entitled, Keep Sharp: Building a Better Brain at Any Age, tells us “fruits and vegetables with thicker skins tend to have fewer pesticide residues, because the thick skin or peel protects the inner flesh. Remove the skin or peel as you would with a banana or avocado, and you’re removing much of the residue.” There is another list of foods, too, that the US Department of Agriculture publishes called the Clean 15: avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, cabbages, onions, sweet peas, papayas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplants, honeydews, kiwis, cantaloupes, cauliflower and broccoli. So the bottom line is…..if you are going to spend extra money to buy organic, it’s better to purchase the “dirty dozen” in an organic form to avoid ingesting unnecessary chemicals.

CREATIVE LIFELONG LEARNING Granville County Senior Services’ Creative Lifelong Learning classes are steadily increasing. We are opening more and more in-person classes and we are ready to see you! Check out the following classes and programs coming up!

*Self Care During Isolation – Nancy Hux, with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare, will discuss ways to stay healthy mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually as we walk through the journey of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be held on Monday, May 10 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.*Masonic Home Tour – we will take a tour of the Masonic Home in Oxford on Friday, May 21.*The History of Granville County – Come discover interesting facts about Granville County from native author Lewis Bowling. This program will be held on Monday, June 7 beginning at 10:00 a.m.*Deep Roots & Sturdy Branches of Country Music, Then & Now – Country music scholars generally agree that modern forms of popular music – Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock and Gospel – derive from musical roots in the American South. Join Professor Jack Bernhardt in the aural journey across “the pond.” We’ll travel from the British Isles and Africa to hear how the fiddle of European origin blended with the banjo brought by African slaves, along with songs of faith catalyzed by the spiritual revivals of the 18th and 19th centuries, and are still heard in Southern music today. This will be held on Friday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.*Repair Café – Have you ever heard of Repair Café? Neither had we! But thanks to Don Fick, we’ve been inspired to learn more! Don organized Repair Café in Cary in 2017, modeled after the original café established in the Netherlands in 2009. The organizational founders had an idea of setting up low-key meeting places nationwide where people could repair their broken items themselves, supported by specialists in a relaxed atmosphere. Simply stated, volunteers donate their time and skills to help repair broken items in need of repair. If this peaks your interest, stay tuned for a date in which Don will come speak to us about setting up a local Repair Café!

In honor of Older American’s Month, the South Granville Rotary Club will hold a drive through community event for seniors over the age of 60 on Friday, May 7 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the new Creedmoor Community Center. You must preregister by calling Cheryl Carrier at (919)528-0848. Everyone registered will receive care packages and snacks. Many thanks to the Rotary Club and all of the individuals, organizations and businesses that have donated items for these care packages! The South Granville Rotary Club continues to be a tremendous supporter of our seniors in the southern end of Granville County and we greatly appreciate all they have done for us both pre-COVID and during the pandemic! Members have sponsored many events and programs at the South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor and have carried home delivered meals during the week, on weekends and holidays during the pandemic! They are truly a service based organization and continue to put the needs of our older adults at the forefront of all they do. Don’t miss out on this event! Thank you South Granville Rotary Club!

The weekly Bingo game at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford returned in May. We are currently limiting participation to 20 people. We’ve had lots of smiles, laughs and fist bumps as people reunited for the first time in over a year! You must register in advance by calling the senior center at (919)693-1930 each Tuesday. At this time we will not take walk-ins unless someone does not show up that was registered. The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold another outdoor bingo event on Tuesday, May 18 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. (rain date will be Tuesday, May 25). Please bring a clipboard to hold your card and your own chair. Bingo cards and markers will be provided. You must register in advance by calling the North Granville Senior Center at (919)693-3383. This was a lot of fun when we held it in April – come and enjoy beautiful spring weather and visiting with friends! Reminder – we always accept donations of bingo prizes! Items must be new or gently used, please no opened food or expired items.

Lawn chair Bingo was held at the North Granville Senior Center in Stovall in April. Another lawn chair bingo event will be held on May 18th – join us!
