AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS SCHEDULED

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers 50 and older. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads.

The Driver Safety Program course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with aging. The course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. Participants learn about current rules of the road and how to operate their vehicles safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Topics include: maintaining proper following distance; methods of changing lanes and turning at intersections; effects of medications on driving; minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots; limiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking and cell phone use; properly using safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes; maintaining physical flexibility and monitoring the driving skills and capabilities of yourself and others.

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will host the AARP Driver Safety Class on Wednesday, March 28th from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. You must preregister for this class by calling the Granville County center at (919)693-1930. The cost for this class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members which includes all course materials.

Course participants may be eligible to receive a state mandated, multi-year discount on their auto insurance premium. Participants should contact their insurance company or agent for more details.

The instructor for this class will be Lynroy Thomas, a certified AARP Driver Safety Program instructor. Sign up now!

Kathy’s KornerBy: Kathy May

Would you like to be a part of a team that provides services to the seniors of our community? Granville County Senior Services has several volunteer opportunities currently available for the right individuals. We are looking for those who enjoy working part-time, have a positive attitude, and will be dedicated.

The following volunteer opportunities are currently available:

– SHIIP counselor The Senior Health Insurance Information Program is a great way for a dedicated, responsible volunteer to become involved. You would be primarily trained by our Medicare Specialist, Carolyn Keith. Some basic computer knowledge is needed, but there is a specific program we use for this program, and you can be easily taught how to use it. Being a SHIIP Counselor is mostly about assisting Medicare recipients with choosing a prescription drug plan that is best for them, as well as helping them solve programs that may arise. After training, you would be provided with work space within the senior center and pick your own part-time hours to work. There is a possibility of this becoming a part-time paid position within a few months.

– Educational Program Coordinator This would be a great part-time opportunity for a retired educator. We need someone to help us move toward expanding our educational offerings and our Creative Lifelong Learning Program. You would be working with our staff to develop new ideas for classes and programs that would interest our community, recruiting instructors, and scheduling.

– Senior Games Assistant This individual would be working with our local senior games staff to coordinate and hold events in various locations throughout Region K (Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance and Warren Counties) during April and May. Necessary training will be provided.

– Home Delivered Meal Driver Individuals are needed to deliver meals to homebound senior adults. No route is longer than one hour in length. Meals are usually delivered between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. You can deliver once or twice per month, once or twice per week, or more often…it is up to you! This task is always easier and more fun if it is done in pairs….so grab your partner or your friend and make a huge difference in someone’s life!

If you are interested in becoming a part of our great team, give me a call at (919)693-1930 to discuss your thoughts and to get additional information!

February and the winter weather is endless. Let’s explore a new technique for our watercolors – stencils!

In this class, we’ll create simple still life paintings and use stencils and watercolor pencils to give our paintings a “new” look. This is an uncommon way to use watercolor pencils – one that is fun, creative and a bit “different.”

Techniques will cover values, watercolor pencil in a non-traditional way, softening edges, a bit of negative work and more.

We will meet Tuesday, February 20 from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. The cost for early registration will be $35.00 per person (after February 10th cost will be $40.00). Participants should bring their own supplies including a small set of watercolor pencils. The instructor will be providing “suggested” images to use for these creative works as well as stencils we can share.

Please register by calling Lin Frye at (919)693-1461 or you can email her at [email protected]

FEBRUARY DAY TRIPSenior Services offers a day trip from one

of our three senior centers each month. This month’s trip will be hosted by the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford.

Granville County Senior Center Thursday, February 22Crabtree Valley Mall – RaleighDeparture time: 9:00 a.m. Cost: $6.00 per personSign-up date: Thursday, February 15

*Join us for a full day of shopping fun! These long cold days of winter get pretty boring at home, so join us as we check out all winter sales and see what is coming out for spring.

SENIOR SERVICES CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Each year the month of February is designated as Black History Month. In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History,” initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, this celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February. In honor of this, all three of our centers will have special programs and activities. Check out the schedule and make plans to attend a program at a center closest to you.

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will be showing a DVD series on black history. This four-part series will look at the last five decades of African American history since the major civil rights victories. This will be shown in segments each Friday for four weeks beginning February 2nd from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Join us for this very interesting program.

The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold their observance on Tuesday, February 20th beginning at 11:00 a.m. Jean Lawson will share various aspects of black culture through Negro spirituals, poetry written in dialect and special readings. This promises to be an interesting, informative and interactive program!

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will hold their program on Friday, February 16 beginning at 10:30 a.m. Shirley Holliday will speak and share memorabilia from her trip to Africa.

Join us at the center closest to you as we celebrate Black History Month.

Mr. Billy Yeargin will be back at the Granville County Senior Center beginning this month to hold another series on World War II. This course, a part of our Creative Lifelong Learning programs, will focus on World War II – the Pacific Theatre. This was a major part of the war between the Allies and Japan, defined by the Allied powers’ Pacific Ocean area command, which included most of the Pacific Ocean and its islands. This will begin Monday, February 19th and run through Monday, March 26th. This class will be $30.00 per person for the six-week session. Mr. Yeargin is a highly sought-after instructor who brings WWII to life. We are so fortunate to be able to have him return for another class with us!

To register for this class please call the center at (919)693-1930.

MOVING FORWARD - AGING GRACEFULLYThe Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will hold an interesting workshop on spirituality

and the mind, body and spirit connection. The workshop, Moving Forward - Aging Gracefully will be led by Maxine Chauvaux and is designed to help you move forward and grow in spirituality while making a connection with yourself and others. Participants will be guided through activities that will give them tools to develop their inner strength, inner faith, inner spirit and inner self. This workshop will explore questions such as Who am I? What is spirituality? How do I develop it? What is my connection to my family, community, the world? How do I keep moving forward as I age? Each participant will discover the tools and practices best suited to him or her that aid in helping to connect body, mind and spirit.

This workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 20, Wednesday, February 21 and Thursday, February 22 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. There is a $25.00 per person charge for this workshop. Participants will need a notebook and pen/pencil and colored pencils if you have them.

To register please call the Granville County Senior Center at (919)693-1930. It’s time to hit the reset button of life and discover ways and words to keep moving forward and age with spirit and dignity.

SPECIAL SPEAKERS PLANNEDGranville County Senior Services tries very hard to keep our seniors informed and up-to-date

with the latest information on aging, community resources, health related information and other types of news that affects our participants. Check out these upcoming programs at two of our senior centers this month.

Stephanie Bias, with the NC Medicare Patrol Program through the NC Department of Insurance, will be at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford on Wednesday, February 28th to prevent “Guard Your Card.” Over the coming months, Medicare recipients will receive new Medicare cards in the mail. Learn more about these new cards, why you are receiving them and the scams associated with them. This program will begin at 11:00 a.m.

On Tuesday, February 6, Jennifer Clement, Director of Occupational Health and Physician Relations with Maria Parham Hospital, will be at the North Granville Senior Center in Stovall to share with us all the services and programs offered at Maria Parham. This program will begin at 11:00 a.m.

MANY THANKS TO…The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford would like to thank Cornerstone Christian

Community Church for their recent monetary donation to the center to be used for purchasing new soft-side coolers for our home delivered meal program. Cornerstone also recognized Granville County Senior Services at a special event held at the church on Sunday, January 14th. Senior Services Director Kathy May, spoke at this event and was presented a special certificate by the church in recognition of our services provided to the senior citizens in Granville County.

Cornerstone has long been a supporter of Senior Services. For over 15 years they have rotated between our three senior centers with monthly gift card giveaways to local grocery stores. These gift cards have helped hundreds of seniors across Granville County. The preschool at the church has performed at the annual Christmas party at the Granville County Center for many years. The children make cards for our participants also.

We greatly appreciate the support Cornerstone has given Senior Services over the years. Many thanks to them for this special recognition!
