Grand Music Gracious Word Sing For Joy® is a production of St. Olaf College. by Pastor Bruce Benson, host T he major league baseball season begins soon. If you are a fan, you know that. If you are not, let me quickly assure you that I am not going to discuss baseball in this column; I am simply going to introduce two people by using a baseball analogy. If you are familiar with the sport you know that all teams rely at times on good pinch hitters: someone who can step up to the plate on short notice, and with a good at-bat help the team. This issue of the Sing For Joy newsletter is the work of a terrific St. Olaf student pinch hitter, Jessica Marie Guzman. Our brand new Communications Coordinator (I’ll introduce her next) doesn’t arrive until just after this newsletter is due, so Jessica has stepped up from the job of “student worker” to pinch hit as “newsletter editor,” and performed like a savvy veteran. Well done, Jessica! Thank you. The next newsletter will be prepared by our newest team member, Carolyn Pierson, who is on the threshold of assuming her duties as Communications Coordinator for Sing For Joy. We enthusiastically welcome her aboard. Carolyn grew up in a house filled with music. With four girls who all played the violin, a father who sang in multiple choirs, and a mother who played piano at Saturday evening church services, “there was,” Carolyn says, “always someone practicing.” And Carolyn continues to make music playing in a community chamber orchestra in Minneapolis. If music is half her life, writing is the other half. Since graduating from St. Olaf College with a degree in English, Carolyn has explored many professional areas: from a documentary film company in New York City to an independent book-publishing house in Minneapolis, freelance writing, and corporate publishing. While serving as Communications Coordinator for us at Sing For Joy, Carolyn will continue to write stories for local lifestyle magazines and hunt for typos and grammar errors as a copy editor at Thomson Reuters (legal publishing). I doubt if there are people anywhere else in the country who can describe their grandfathers the way Carolyn describes hers: “One grandfather is a retired Lutheran pastor from South Dakota, and the other is the architect who designed the church.” Maybe that gives Carolyn a built-in understanding of church music, which is both a “cathedral of sound” in which the church does its worship-work, and also a preacher in that cathedral, addressing the heart and mind with what an old liturgy described as “the promises and challenges of the Gospel.” We welcome Carolyn to the Sing For Joy team, and look forward to doing our good work together with her. After nearly seven years since I bid farewell to St. Olaf as a student, I am thrilled to be returning to the “Hill” as the communications coordinator for Sing For Joy. I look forward to meeting many of you in the months to come and eagerly welcome this next chapter in my life. Carolyn Peace be with you, APRIL 2013 / YEAR C

The major league baseball season begins soon. If you are a fan, you know

that. This issue of the Sing For Joy newsletter is the work of a terrifi c St.

Carolyn grew up in a house fi lled with music.

Olaf College with a degree in

English, Carolyn has explored many professional areas: from a documentary fi lm company in New York City to an independent book-publishing house in Minneapolis, freelance writing, and corporate publishing.

Carolyn
