“The story of Christmas is a story of divine giving.” by Pastor Bruce Benson, host Grand Music Gracious Word Sing For Joy® is a production of St. Olaf College. I like Advent more than I like advertising, and Christmas more than cash; I am more interested in music than money; and if given a choice to ponder Bach or a budget, I’ll take Bach any day. But I know my preferences are a kind of luxury. That is, I am free to focus on what I enjoy only because other people, all through history, have been minding budgets, paying bills and raising funds. Musicians, their teachers and instrument makers, as well as architects and custodians of concert halls and churches, all need and deserve to be paid. And in our day, we must also include the technicians who record and produce CDs and radio programs so that we can enjoy music at home. If I lift my nose a bit, and pretend that I am somehow more noble or righteous because I spend my time with the Bible and great music instead of bills and money, I am plainly dishonest. Music is not sustained by appreciation alone, just as faith, hope, and love do not flourish with mere votes of approval; they need our participation. But there is something I respect and admire that attends to both the wonders of Advent and the need to pay the bills: generosity. It is, like love and humor, one of the wonders of human life; both a gift and sign of God. Okay … you can probably guess that I am heading toward reminding you of Sing For Joy’s annual budget, and our dependence on your gifts, and I am. But I don’t want to jump right into it; I want to get there by a path that leads through Advent and Christmas, because those wonderful seasons are themselves celebrations of generosity. The story of Christmas is a story of divine giving, in which God gives his only son, in love. “God with us” — that’s generosity. As one of this year’s Gospel readings for the Advent season says, “Go and tell John what you hear and see, the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.” Generosity. The music of Advent and Christmas are full of the same generosity. Church goers see this in their own fellow members who practice, practice, practice just to give the gift of music to a worshipping congregation. Sure, the singers get something out of it too, but all music making is fueled at least in part by generosity. And with that, the path arrives at Sing For Joy. Our music too is fueled in part by generosity. It starts with the enduring, faithful generosity of the Sukup family in Iowa, but it includes you and others you can’t see who listen with you. The needs of the world are many, and none of us can support every cause. But if in this season you can share your generosity with Sing For Joy, we will be grateful, and will strive to use your gift responsibly and well. Peace be with you, DECEMBER 2013 / YEAR A

Sing For Joy® is a production of St. Olaf College.

I like Advent more than I like advertising, and Christmas more than cash; I am more

interested in music than money; and if given a choice to ponder Bach or a budget, I’ll take Bach any day. “God

with us” — that’s generosity.

Peace be with you,
