Grand Knight Report Knights Knews June . 2018 Greetings Brothers of Council 5803, I had the honor of attending this year’s State Convention held in Sacra- mento. I was accompanied by our Deputy Grand Knight Robert Smith and Past Grand Knight Henry Mancilla. The hospitality rooms were full of good food and an abundance of adult beverages which we graciously consumed to the fullest. Needless to say, spirits were up!! On Saturday afternoon we attended the awards ceremony. The council took first place for Community Activities, second place for Council Activi- ties, third place for Youth Activities, sixth place for Vocations Programs and tenth place for Church Ac- tivities. These awards are a direct reflection of the hard work you’ve all demonstrated throughout this Columbian year. I want to thank each and every one for a job well done. In our travels, one thing that stood out above all others was the uncanny similarities between councils. For instance, one afternoon we made a point of randomly asking other brother Knights their personal concerns for the order and challenges their councils up against. The majority of those questioned indi- cated that “getting the younger members involved” was by far the biggest and most perplexing strug- gle. Unfortunately there was no magic solution other than perseverance and prayer. The Lord knows we do enough of that, or do we? I want to thank all the brothers who worked the Simi Valley Street Fair. We managed to give away a good number of narcotic disposal pouches. We also gave away a number of pouches at the Senior Center Wellness Event and the Simi Valley Police Drug and Dispensary Day. Many thanks to those who helped support the Bethany for our departed brother Herman Conant. As our dear friend rests in the presence of our Lord and Savior, let us also rest easy knowing we gave him a sendoff worthy of a Brother Knight. It has been an honor to serve as your Grand Knight this Columbian year. I truly have a new respect for those who have gone before me and I pray for those who will inevitably embrace the daunting respon- sibilities that go with being Grand Knight. Thanks to all my brothers for your endless support. I would like to give a very special thanks to my most worthy Deputy Grand Knight, Robert Smith. Words can- not describe my appreciation for all the help he has given me this year. In closing, this has been a humbling experience as well as an elevating achievement I will carry the rest of my days. God Bless all of you my brothers! Greetings Brothers of Council 5803,

I had the honor of attending this year’s State Convention held in Sacra-mento.

The council took first place for Community Activities, second place for Council Activi-ties, third place for Youth Activities, sixth place for Vocations Programs and tenth place for Church Ac-tivities.

The majority of those questioned indi-cated that “getting the younger members involved” was by far the biggest and most perplexing strug-gle.

I truly have a new respect for those who have gone before me and I pray for those who will inevitably embrace the daunting respon-sibilities that go with being Grand Knight. Thanks to all my brothers for your endless support. I would like to give a very special thanks to my most worthy Deputy Grand Knight, Robert Smith. Words can-not describe my appreciation for all the help he has given me this year. In closing, this has been a humbling experience as well as an elevating achievement I will carry the rest of my days. God Bless all of you my brothers!

Fire With the dry season upon us, we can’t help remembering the devastating fires that were in California last year. One may ask these questions:

Is God involved? What does scripture say about fire as a meta-phor for God’s action in our lives? Fire has been used to sym-bolize the judgment of God, judgment that calls for conversion rather that eradication.

I have just finished reading Dennis Pager’s book Exodus, a commentary on the verses of that Old Testament Book. At the beginning of the Exodus story, we read “There the angel of the Lord appeared to (Moses) as fire flaming out of a bush.” (Ex 3:12). Moses saw that the burning bush was not consumed. This was a manifestation of God in the form of fire.

From this fire Moses was commissioned to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The mani-festation of God directed the people of Israel in the form of a cloud by day and fire in the cloud by night. (Ex 40:38) Here we see fire as a metaphor for who God is - He is with His people.

In the gospels, judgment is conveyed when fire consumes unfruitful trees, chaff, or with-ered vine branches. Here the destruction comes from lack of fruit from not responding to grace, from refusing the covenant by God in Christ. John the Baptist tells us that Je-sus will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Mt 3:11). Jesus also says, “I have come to set the earth on fire and I wish it were already blazing.” (Lk 12:49) When the disciples were gathered at Pentecost for the coming of the Holy Spirit, there appeared to them tongues as of fire which parted and came to rest on each of them. (Act 2:3).

We see here, fire can be a symbol of God’s presence, judgment and purification of hu-man hearts and inspirations of spiritual desires and actions. God’s presence continues to be offered to His people. In Christ, God’s image is one of a human face rather than fire or cloud.

Lazy Days of Summer Have you ever heard the expression “lazy days of summer”?

While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busi-est time of the year. Especially for parents with school-aged children. And being busy, it’s easy to forget about such things as reviewing your life in-surance coverage.

The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with me, your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer. Whether or not you have life insurance with the order, I’ll be hap-py to meet with you and make sure your coverage continues to meet your needs and goals. If you’ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.) chances are your life insur-ance needs to be updated. I’ll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

Call me to set up an appointment. When we meet you’ll discover that time spent with me is time well spent. But make the call today. Because sum-mer is not only busy, it’s also coming to an end.

Herman Conant Herman, my friend, my mentor and my brother. When I took over the Council bulletin many years ago I was not wise in the ways of our Council. So, whenever I had a question I would go to Herman. After a half hour discourse (Herman loved to talk!), he would answer my question and even those I hadn’t asked. Looking back on those days, I really cherish those conversations because each answer he gave was tinged with a little wisdom, a little information and a lot of love for his beloved Knights of Co-lumbus. How I wish that each new Knight could have talked to Herman so that they too, could have developed that same feeling of pride, fellowship and loyalty that Herman had. I could use a lot of clichés and say that “he is in a better place” or that we are “celebrating his life” and while this may be true it does not lessen the pain and sorrow that all of his Brother Knights feel. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. Brother Herman, may you rest in peace and be with our Lord. Amen

2018 FREE THROW CONTEST

The 20th annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest for the 7th & 8th grade students at St Rose of Lima School was conducted on April 12, 2018. The weather was good. Each of the 45participants re-ceived a T-shirt along with a pizza lunch that was provided by our council.

We presented the top 3 winners in each group a ribbon with either a Gold, Silver or Bronze medallion attached. We will also be presenting each 1st place winner with a 1st Place Certi icate and monetary gift card at their respective end-of -year ceremonies. I think I can speak for all of us involved in putting on this event when I say that we had a great time working with the youth of our school in putting on an event. The medal winners were:

The Knights of Columbus Council

The annual fishing event, commonly known as “the Bishop trip” will be held this year from Thursday, October 4 through Sunday, October 7 at the Creekside RV Park in the breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains SSW of Bishop, CA. People typically arrive even as early as Wednesday and as late as Friday night, so don't let the dates scare you away from a great time in fellowship with you brother Knights, giving many a sore lip to those pesky rainbow trout. Those interested in making the trip should contact Creekside RV park soon in order to reserve a site. Tell the attendant you are with “the Knights 5803.” Rental trailers are available, as well as RV sites with full hookups, and tent sites for the adventurous soul. You are responsible for your own food, though people often form small groups in advance to help defray costs. There is a small general store for bait, tackle, and sundry items, but one does not want to depend on it for one's daily bread. Where we stay in the Bishop Creek Drainage is a world famous trout fishery. Simple and inexpensive tackle can yield excellent results in the creeks as well as South, Sabrina, and North Lakes. Contact Chris Smith for tips on gear (don't ask Tony Lemos as he doesn't know what he's doing, even after all these years. It's really quite sad.) You will need a California DFW fishing license, which is available online at https://www.ca.wildlifelicense.com/InternetSales/ , or at any Big5 Sporting Goods or Walmart. Tradition for the weekend is a large tri-tip dinner with all the fixing on Saturday evening at 5pm. Cost for this meal and the fishing derby (Friday-Saturday 4pm) is $15 for adults and $7 for youth un-der 12. Prizes are awarded to 3rd place for biggest fish in the adult and youth categories. This is a fun and relaxing weekend for Knights and their male friends and family members. We try to keep this a drama-free men's event where one can be a stinky animal, away from the worries of the city. It is a good outreach for that person you know that is on the fence for becoming a Knight. For those of us who have been going on the trip for years, you know what great people our Creekside RV hosts are. Ron and Donna Scira are devout Catholics with huge hearts for orphans. Ron has been in failing health, so Donna has been doing some heavy lifting as of late. Please keep them both in your prayers

BINGO WORKERS

We are in need of more pull tab workers and we still need a caller and a call back person. Training is free and it is not a hard job. For pull tabs you basically sell lottery tickets to the players. If you are new to the council please call me so I can get you on the Bingo Schedule. If you can’t work a specific week-end in July or have a shift preference please email me at [email protected] . I produce the schedule around the 2nd Wednesday of the month before. So get me any special requests for July by June 12th.

I have also begun to post the bingo worker schedule online at www.kc5803.org.
