Transcript of Graduate Studies Connections: September 2015
Welcome back Bears! (or if your new here, hi!) Summer was fun, but it’s nice to be back in the good old Adirondacks and enjoying the nice few days of sun before winter hits (and you knows it coming). New school year means new changes like the new col-orful library, the new Graduate school catalog (see inside for de-tails) and the wonderful new Graduate Assistants! The Center for Graduate Studies is also trying some new things such as the Grad School Café. But don’t worry folks, this is still the same Potsdam that we all know and love. And if your new here, welcome! We’re super happy to have you here. Stop on over to the Center for Graduate Studies, located in Saterlee Hall 231(follow the arrows) and met everyone in the Grad studies office, they’re always here to help you out. My biggest recommendation for any one new is to get out there and get to know the campus and everyone here. At Potsdam we have big hearts and are very friendly. Before you know it, the thought of leaving here will be unbearable!

The Graduate Diversity Fellowship is awarded to students who have
been admitted to graduate or professional study and who will con-
tribute to the diversity of the student body in the graduate or profes-
sional program in which enrollment is sought. These students have
demonstrated that they will contribute to the diversity of the student
body, and have successfully over-come a disadvantage or other im-
pediment to success in higher education.
Have you visited CGS yet? Well what are you
waiting for?!
If you have ever been in Saterlee you may have noticed the maroon arrows on various walls. You probably just
ignored them or maybe fought back your curiosity to follow them for more pressing matters such as class. However, if you haven’t followed the arrows you’re surly missing out. You may not find the city of Oz like Dor-othy when she followed the yellow brick road, but follow the marron arrows and you’ll discover a place equal-ly as magical: The Center for Graduate Studies! Most grad students have been inside the center to fill out pa-perwork and do other admission related tasks, but there is so much more than that! Step into our student lounge where you have access to two computers, a printer, a coffee maker (for that much needed energy). You can also able rent a conference room or a locker to store your belongings (so no more carrying that heavy backpack). Plus if you ever have a questions, the experts are always here to help you out! So what are you waiting for? Stop by today.

Program Spotlight: Community Health
For this month’s newsletter, we will be focusing on the Community Health Master degree
program. This program gives each student a chance to make their own path into the interesting
world of public health. What makes this program unique is that it is one of the few Community
Health Programs that focus on rural community health.
Chelsea Bartlett ‘16, one of the Community Health graduate students says that one of her deciding
factors for choosing Potsdam for her MS was the professors “ I had really amazing teachers for my
undergraduate degree. They're the people that made Community Health my passion. I knew that if I
came back to Potsdam I would have the opportunity to work with those same Professors”.
Chelsea two favorite things about the program are the professors and the “tight-knit” community
that she has found within the program. “Having a small class makes it extremely easy to learn and
work.”
Ashley Thayer ‘16 enjoys her experience as a graduate because of the warm and accepting
community that has really boosted her confidence. “This program has boosted my confidence in
the skills I have learned and need to start a career.” What Ashley loves about this program is the is
the classes that have real world value and are very active.
One of the great things about the Community Health program are the rigorous internship
that each students can take on. Currently, Chelsea is interning at Seaway Valley Prevention Council.
She works on NYS DOH grant with the Bureau of Tobacco Control called “Advancing Tobacco Free
Communities.” Chelsea goal is to someday become the director of a public health/community
health agency.
Both Chelsea and Ashley talk about the many skills they have developed during their time in
the program like the importance of grant writing.
These girls know the value of a higher education and with all the wonderful advantages of a
great program at SUNY Potsdam such as small class sizes, great facility that cares about you and real
world experience.

Graduates Take Lake Placid!! A MST Childhood Education major takes a break from the books to look at the world around her.
SUNY Potsdam Lake Placid Trip
By: Colleen Gravelle
As Canadian students in the MST Childhood Education program at SUNY Potsdam we wanted to
not only learn in class but also take the opportunity to explore our surroundings. Since the sum-
mer is usually about being under the sun and being active we wanted to incorporate this into
our exploring. We took the time to have meetings with our professor about possibilities that we
could take advantage of. Once we did this, we came to the conclusion that going to Lake Placid
would be ideal. On one of our days off from our busy schedule we spent our time enjoying this
excursion. We got to take the gondola up Whiteface Mountain which was breathtaking. Once we
arrived at the top we took photos, went for a walk and spent time taking in the scenery. After-
wards we arrived to Lake Placid itself and had lunch in town. The food was delicious, the compa-
ny was delightful and we learned a lot about the area. Not only did this day trip give us the op-
portunity to bond with each other and have our teacher be part of it, but we learned that SUNY
Potsdam was a community. Being part of the program means learning within the classroom and
learning outside of the classroom. Overall, this trip was one of the best days of summer and we
would do it again anytime. Finding the time to relax during Grad school is crucial so that we can
all have the energy to succeed. What better way to relax than to plan excursions with your peers.
For this reason we’re looking forward to finding more people to join us in the future.
Get ready for G-Bear!
(Graduate student for a Beneficial Experience Action
Roundtable)

in activities designed for and by graduate students,

The G-Bear projects purpose is to serve as a direct line for the continuous improve-
ment of the experience graduate students have outside of the classroom. During the
school year, students are welcomed to patriciate by taking leadership roles within
the group, assist in planning of profession development activities, networking,
