It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE Pharmaceutical Research: Research in some form has gone hand in hand with the development of Pharmacy through the ages. However, it was the chemical synthesis of antipyrine in 1883 that gave impetus and inspiration for intensive search for therapeutically useful compounds. Begun by the Germans, who dominate the field until World War I, the lead in pharmaceutical research passed thereafter to the United States. Research in Pharmacy came into its own in the late 1930's and early 1940's; has grown steadily since, supported by pharmaceutical manufactures, universities, and government. Today it used techniques and trained personnel from every branch of science in the unending search for new life-saving and life-giving drug products.

kidney, diabetes patients complied: (22nd May,2015) The first definitive summary of the best and safest blood pressure lowering treatments for kidney disease and diabetes patients has been compiled by clinicians. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common causes of kidney disease around the world, and people often have both. Chronic kidney disease caused by diabetes always affects both kidneys and generally gets worse over time, often leading to kidney failure requiring dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant.

Proton therapy has fewer side effects in esophageal cancer patients: (22nd May,2015) New research has found that esophageal cancer patients treated with proton therapy experienced significantly less toxic side effects, including nausea, blood abnormalities and loss of appetite, than patients treated with older radiation therapies.

How a schizophrenia risk gene affects the brain: (22nd May,2015) Brain imaging studies have already revealed that mental illnesses involve alterations in both the structure and connectivity of the brain. Scientists have now, for the first time, shown how the disruption of a key gene involved in mental illness impacts on the brain.

Faster heart rate linked to diabetes risk: (22nd May,2015) An association between resting heart rate and diabetes suggests that heart rate measures could identify individuals with a higher future risk of diabetes, according to an international team of researchers.

Human stem cell model reveals molecular cues critical to neurovascular unit formation: (21st May,2015) Using human embryonic stem cells, researchers have created a model that allows them to track cellular behavior during the earliest stages of human development in real-time. The model reveals, for the first time, how autonomic neurons and blood vessels come together to form the neurovascular unit.

Study on neurogenesis in the olfactory bulb: (21st May,2015) The integration of new neurons in the adult brain is a phenomenon more generally compromised in the brains of depressed patients, new research shows. This new work confirms that neurogenesis in the human olfactory bulb is a marginal phenomenon in adults. These findings shed light on the special features of the human brain.

Implantable micro-device to monitor oxygen in glioma to improve treatment outcomes: (21st May,2015) Monitoring oxygen levels in human tumors growing in a mouse brain using EPR oximetry with implantable resonators provides opportunities to evaluate and optimize various strategies being developed to improve oxygen levels in the glioma.

Head injuries could result in neurodegenerative disease in rugby union players: (21st May,2015) Until now, the association between head injuries and neurodegenerative disease, specifically chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), has predominantly been made with boxers. Now, the first case has been reported showing an association between exposure to head injuries in rugby union players and an increased risk in neurodegenerative disease.

Blood test for Alzheimer's one step closer: (21st May,2015) A simple blood test to detect early Alzheimer's disease is a step closer to being used to screen older adults. Just as with blood tests for other diseases, such as diabetes, protocols must be established to make sure every lab performs the test exactly the same. Such

SWINE FLU: A RECENT PHOBIA

• WHAT IS SWINE FLU It is basically Respiratory Infection. It was first detected in America in June, 2009. Swine Flu was named after influenza virus in pig. H1N1 virus is responsible for swine flu. H1N1 virus or swine flu spread easily. Their spreading characteristic is very fast.

• HISTORY OF SWINE FLU Swine flu is generally known as pig influenza, swine influenza, hog flu and pig flu. Swine influenza virus (SIV) or swine-origin influenza virus (S-OIV) is any strain of the influenza family of viruses.SIV strains include influenza C and the influenza A. Subtype of influenza A is known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. It was first reported in California and Texas then later in other states and even in Mexico in March or April 2009 and the media labeled as ‘swine flu’ in the same year. In the 1918, it was distinguish that human flu is responsible for swine influenza virus when pigs became sick at the same time as humans. Disease occur in pig for influenza virus, which was first identified in 1930.

• HOW IT SPREAD It enters the body through the mucous membranes - the eyes, the nose or the mouth. Swine flu is spread just like the regular seasonal

flu spreads. It goes from person to person through close contact and direct touch, indirecttouch, or respiratory droplets that carrying the virus. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. Any person cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products are safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F (72°C) kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

• SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, lethargy, sneezing, difficulty breathing, respiratory problem and fatigue. The 2009 outbreak has shown an increased percentage of patients reporting diarrhea and vomiting.

• DIAGNOSIS For diagnosis of swine influenza A infection, respiratory specimen (nasopharyngeal swab, throat swab nasal aspirate, nasal washing) would generally need to be collected. Available Laboratory Tests are rapid antigen test, RT–PCR, virus isolation, virus Genome Sequencing.

• PREVENTION The nose and mouth must be covered with disposable tissues while coughing or sneezing. The used tissues must be disposed off immediately after using them. Hygiene and cleanliness must be maintained by washing hands frequently with soap and water.

Touching the eyes, nose or mouth without washing hands must be totally avoided. A doctor must be consulted immediately, in case flu-like symptoms are observed. In case of flu-like symptoms, the patient must be quarantined. One should stay at home from work, school and crowed places in case flu-like symptoms are observed. Face masks and gloves must be used when moving out in crowded places or nursing any ill patient.

• TREATMENT Treatment of swine flu can be done by 3 ways. Such as:

Vaccination : Vaccination can protect human from swine flu virus.Two different brands of vaccine Pandemrix and Celvapan are used. For Pandemrix vaccine taken only one dose and in case of Celvapan vaccine taken two doses within three weeks. At that moment Tamiflu is used for combat the swine flu.

Antiviral Therapy: Two classes of antiviral drugs are available for the prevention and treatment of swineflu: neuraminidase inhibitors and adamantanes, which inhibit a viral protein called M2.

Swine Flu and Ayurveda: Ayurveda promotes the concept that if one's immune system is strong, then even if the body is exposed to viruses, one will not be affected. Ayurvedic treatment for swine flu involves the use of some herbs. These are: Basil, Ginger, Garlic, Gooseberry and Aloe Vera.

It is a great pleasure for me to publish the 3rd issue of 45th Volume of GNIPST BULLETIN. All the followers of GNIPST BULLETIN are able to avail the bulletin through facebook account ‘GNIPST bulletin’ I am very much thankful to all the GNIPST members and readers who are giving their valuable comments, encouragements and supports. ARCHIVE The general body meeting of APTI, Bengal Branch has been

conducted at GNIPST on 15th June, 2012. The program started witha nice presentation by Dr. Pulok Kr. Mukherjee, School of NaturalProducts, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript forpublication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two hourlong discussion among more than thirty participants on differentaspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember participantsapplied for membership on that very day.

GNIPST is now approved by AICTE and affiliated to WBUT forconducting the two years’ post graduate course (M.Pharm)in PHARMACOLOGY. The approved number of seat is 18.

The number of seats in B.Pharm. has been increased from 60 to120.
