It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE The Era of Biologicals: When, in 1894, Behring and Roux announced the effectiveness of diphtheria antitoxin, pharmaceutical scientists both in Europe and in the United States rushed to put the new discovery into production. Parke, Davis & Company was among the pioneers. The serum became available in 1895, and lives of thousands of children were saved. Inoculation of horses with diphtheria toxin was the first step of many in producing antitoxin. In 1903, Parke-Davis received U.S. Biological License No. 1. New, improved biological products have continued to become available, climaxed in 1955 by poliomyelitis vaccine.

NEWS UPDATE Altering genes with the aid of light: (08th May,

2015) Scientists have been manipulating genes for a while. Now researchers have found a way to control the process with higher precision, by using light.

New combination treatment strategy to 'checkmate' glioblastoma: (08th May, 2015) Therapies that specifically target mutations in a person's cancer have been much-heralded in recent years, yet cancer cells often find a way around them. To address this, researchers identified a promising combinatorial approach to treating glioblastomas, the most common form of primary brain cancer.

Clinical decision tools in electronic medical records can reduce childhood radiation exposure: (08th May, 2015) Childhood exposure to ionizing radiation increases lifetime malignancy risk, but a team of researchers has found that with just a little bit of education, the risk can be significantly reduced. Currently, up to 40% of computed tomography, or CT, scans are ordered (for everyone) unnecessarily.

Protein aggregates save cells during aging : (08th May, 2015) As organisms age, a gradual loss of cellular protein quality control occurs. This results in increased production of toxic protein clumps, so-called aggregates. Using a comprehensive approach, researchers have now analyzed changes in protein composition during aging. The results show that the quantities of proteins undergo a severe shift. This also sheds new light on the origin and function of protein aggregates.

It doesn't take a brain injury to have headache, dizziness and cognitive impairment: (08th May, 2015) Researchers have provided an explanation for why many people with even very trivial head injuries, or even injuries to other parts of their bodies, experience incapacitating post-concussion like syndromes.

Discovery accelerates targeted cancer treatment: (08th May, 2015) A method to help shorten the road to better cancer treatment has been developed by an international team of researchers. When DNA is damaged, several different proteins start pouring in to repair the damage; their types depend on the damage done. Up

until now, it has been common practice to study one protein at a time, but by way of so-called mass spectrometry, researchers are now able to simultaneously see all the proteins that help repair damaged DNA.

Environmental exposure to hormones used in animal agriculture greater than expected: (08th May, 2015) Research by environmental scientists finds that potentially harmful growth-promoting hormones used in beef production are expected to persist in the environment at higher concentrations and for longer durations than previously thought.

Tracking defects caused by brain tumor mutation yields insight to advance targeted therapy: (08th May, 2015) Scientists have gained ground toward developing more targeted therapies for the most common childhood brain tumor. The findings involve the DDX3X gene. In 2012, other work highlighted DDX3X as a promising focus for efforts to develop targeted therapies against medulloblastoma. Such treatments target the genetic mistakes that give rise to the brain tumors four subtypes.

Researchers develop custom artificial membranes with programmable surfaces: (07th May, 2015) Researchers have developed artificial membranes with programmable features, enabling studies of cell communication and the molecular basis of disease. The new study demonstrates how researchers can examine the interactions of cell surfaces with other biological molecules, with far ranging applications in medicine, biochemistry and biophysics.

KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE Property inhibiting growth of bird flu virus

discovered in eggs Eggs are one of the most versatile foods because of their rich nutrient content, and their functional properties can be widely leveraged in the food industry. However, a hen does not lay eggs to produce excellent human food but to create new life, chicks. This is why eggs contain many bioactive components. Eggs are a potential source of raw material for all kinds of new applications in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and biotechnology industries. One of the potentially useful compounds is ovomucin, a protein in egg white that maintains its gel-like structure. Hiidenhovi discovered in his research at Luke that preparations of ovomucin created using physical and enzymatic methods inhibited the growth of viruses that cause bird flu and Newcastle disease. In his doctoral research, he created a simple and quick method to isolate ovomucin from egg white, whereas many other methods require 1-2 days. Promising laboratory results, but further use requires more research Both viruses are pathogens that cause considerable losses to poultry production every year. Also, the transmission of the bird flu virus from poultry to humans remains a major concern in health care. Any substance that can inhibit the growth of bird flu virus in particular merits further research. While the laboratory results are promising, more detailed research is required in both animal and human models, for instance to explore the physiological mechanisms more closely.

DRUGS UPDATES FDA Approves Avelox (moxifloxacin) as

Additional Antibacterial Treatment for Plague: (08th May, 2015) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Avelox (moxifloxacin) to treat patients with plague, a rare and potentially fatal bacterial infection. The agency approval for plague includes use of the drug for the treatment of pneumonic plague (infection of the lungs), and septicemic plague (infection of the blood). Avelox is also approved for prevention of plague in adult patients. Read more

FINISHING SCHOOL TRAINING PROGRAMME: The FINISHING SCHOOL TRAINING PROGRAMME is going to organize by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and Training & Placement Cell, GNIPST in collaboration with Indian Pharmacy Graduates Association (IPGA), Bengal Branch from 21st February to 11th April, 2015 at GNIPST Auditorium.

On 21st February, 2015 the Finishing School Training Programme of GNIPST was inaugurated by Sri Soumen Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Director, Drug Control Office, Goutam Kr. On 21st March, 2015 Mr. Tridib Neogi, Associate Vice-President (Quality Assurance), Albert David Ltd. delivered his valuable lectures in the 4th FINISHING SCHOOL TRAINING PROGRAMME of GNIPST.

On 28th March, 2015 Dr. Gautam Chaterjee, an Alumni of Jadavpur University and presently associated with NIPER delivered his valuable lectures in the 5th FINISHING SCHOOL TRAINING PROGRAMME of GNIPST.
