Body clocks link to Osteoarthritis
(11th June, 2013)
The group of researchers of University of Manchester established the
role of biological clock on cartilage tissue functioning using mice
model. This suggested that clock deterioration could contribute to an
increased risk of developing osteoarthritis in later life. According to
scientists scheduled exercise, regular meals and the periodic warming
and cooling of joints could be used to relieve the symptoms of
osteoarthritis.Read more

receptors called kappa opioid receptors in this key anxiety-mediating
brain region, the rats' signs of addiction abated.Read more

pregnancy are among the clinical conditions that demand blood
transfusion. According to Melbourne Declaration, World Health
Organization and other international policymaker recognize that
Safe blood and blood products and their transfusion are a critical
aspect of health care and public health that saves millions of lives
and improves the health and quality of life of many patients.
The importance of protecting donors welfare and appreciating
their generous donations of the gift of life.
The realization of the health related Millennium DevelopmentGoals to reduce child mortality (Goal 4), to improve maternal
health (Goal 5) and to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other
diseases (Goal 6) is dependent on universal access to safe blood
transfusion.
Regular voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors are the
cornerstone of a safe and sustainable national supply of blood and
blood products sufficient to meet the transfusion requirements of
the patient population.
However two major problems related to blood transfusion are
blood shortage andunsafe blood.
Many patients do not have access to blood when they need it.
Of the estimated 80 million units of blood donated annually
worldwide, only 38% are collected in the developing world where
82% of the worlds population live. The shortfall has a particular

impact on women with complications of pregnancy, trauma victims
and children with severe life-threatening anaemia. Up to 150 000
pregnancy-related deaths could be avoided each year through access
to safe blood.
Another problem is unsafe blood. Many people are exposed to
avoidable, life-threatening risks through the transfusion of unsafe
blood. It is estimated that about 5% of HIV infections are transmitted
by unsafe transfusion as a result of the collection of blood from unsafe
donors, irregular or inadequate supplies of materials to test blood forinfections, poor laboratory testing procedures, inadequately trained
staff and absence of quality systems or unnecessary transfusions.
Blood is also an effective means of transmitting hepatitis B, hepatitis
C, syphilis, malaria and Chagas disease. Less accessibility of safe
blood is the major contribution to the load of HIB patient and
mortality of the African and other developing countries.
The keys of safe blood transfusion:
The major ways to ensure the safe blood transfusion are:
recruitment of low-risk blood donors,
testing
blood grouping,
processing into components
storage and transportation

According to WHO, a safe and adequate blood supply is not only
an essential human right but also a cost-effective investment in the
health and economic wealth of every nation.
WHO strategy for blood safety:
A well-organized, nationally-coordinated blood transfusion service
that can provide adequate and timely supplies of safe blood for all
patients in need.
The collection of blood only from voluntary non-remuneratedblood donors from low-risk populations.
Testing of all donated blood for transfusion-transmissible
infections, blood grouping and compatibility testing.
The appropriate clinical use of blood, including the use of
alternatives to transfusion wherever possible, and the safe
administration of blood and blood products.
Quality system covering all stages of the transfusion process.
Key messages - World Blood Donor Day 2013
A single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives.
Every year 107 million blood donations are collected worldwide.
Approximately half of these are collected in high-income countries,
home to only 15% of the worlds population.

Many patients requiring transfusion, particularly in developing
countries, do not have timely access to safe blood.
Blood collection from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors is
the cornerstone of a safe and sufficient blood supply. Regular
voluntary blood donors are the safest source of blood, as there are
fewer bloodborne infections among these donors than among
people who donate for family members in emergencies or who give
blood for payment.
In low- and middle-income countries, the greatest use of donatedblood is for pregnancy-related complications and severe childhood
anaemia.
In high-income countries, transfusion is most commonly used for
supportive care in heart surgery, transplant surgery, massive
trauma and cancer therapy.
Providing safe and adequate blood through well-organized,
national blood systems should be an integral part of every countrys
national health-care policy.
WHOs goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies
from 100% voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.
WHO provides policy guidance and technical assistance to
support countries to ensure that safe blood and blood products are
available and used appropriately for all people who need them.
