The entire country is still reeling from the shock of the recent fires that swept devastation over much of the state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person and animal affected by the fires. Tragedies like this bring together a strong community spirit, as collectively we take stock and rebuild our lives, and regain a sense of normality.
A hot, dry summer was predicted, but it came as a shock to many when a fire sparked, and was driven down the mountains at lightning speed and with hurricane force, leaving a trail of destruction on Thursday 17th October.
More of the dangerous weather conditions are to come. Australia is expected to experience hotter and drier conditions this spring and summer as a weak El Niño pattern develops across the Pacific Ocean.
This is in stark contrast to the past two years, where La Niña conditions dominated, contributing to heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures across much of the country. And while we may have enjoyed it at the time, this has caused increased vegetation growth, which is now drying in the hot winds to become fuel for further bushfires.
El Niño in force! Vigilance Required over the Hot Dry Summer!

From the Editor
What a month it has been. As I sit here compiling your latest community news, I can’t help but feel overwhelmingly proud of the amazing show of community spirit in recent weeks. Looking back, the situation was surreal but the devastation left behind, very real.
Like many of you, I too, know people who suffered the loss of property and all possessions in the devastation of Thursday 17th October. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have suffered loss, and to all the incredibly amazing firefighters and volunteers who continue to fight for us every day. They say it’s going to be one of the worst summers in history for fires – if you haven’t already done so, make an action plan NOW!
On a lighter note, and to take your mind off the fires, we have a spectacular Pre- Christmas lift-out, full of various discounts and offers, to get you into the yuletide spirit! A great opportunity for you to get a head start on your Christmas shopping!
Never get tired of doing little things for others; sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts. Be prepared and stay safe!

Bushfire Fundraiser For Christie and GraceKids Academy Preschool in Glenmore Park is looking to host a
major fundraising event within the next month in aid of Christie and Grace, their employees who recently lost their homes and everything inside them to the bushfires in the Blue Mountains.
Christie and Grace were at work when they got the call from their partners that the fires were close to their homes. Both their partners had been told that they were not able to get through and go back to their houses to get their belongings.
Christie’s partner Jake had seen a neighbour run through to get back to their place and attempted to do the same thing. As he was running, he collapsed from the smoke and was very lucky to flag down a car that was passing. The driver of the car stopped and took Jake up to the house to rescue their dog, which was lying in the laundry still alive. As Jake dragged the dog outside, he watched the lounge room go up in flames, as well as his beloved old Holden he had been working on.
Grace’s situation was much the same, however she lived with
her mum, step dad and sister and they also lost everything. Grace had animals at her house as well. Her dog was found in the neighbour’s yard and treated for a collapsed lung and smoke inhalation. Grace found only one of her cats the next morning when she went back to go through her house hoping to find whatever she could. It wasn’t until later that day that they found her second cat in the neighbour’s yard.
The fundraising event will raise much needed funds for Christie and Grace and to help them re-build their lives and also the NSW Rural Fire Service who have worked tirelessly to support the community in protecting homes. Kids Academy is asking for support from small businesses. They are looking for donations of items they can use for prizes / lucky door prizes, which will be given away on the night.
If you have or know of someone with a small business that may like to contribute donations to the night, please share and contact Chantelle on (02) 4733 2449 at Kids Academy Preschool for more information.

Getting Ready For ChristmasI’ve heard lots of people say how it seems that
Christmas has come around earlier this year. It might seem as if it has because the shops have had Christmas stock on their shelves months before most of us are even vaguely thinking about getting out our Christmas decorations, buying
our lovely smelling real tree or putting up the lights on our house! You probably know, in fact you might even be one of those people who have sorted out their lay-bys or purchased all your Christmas gifts at the January post-Christmas Sales! How organised is that! Gifts bought. Christmas functions planned. Holidays locked in!
Yet for all this, Christmas IS a celebration and for any worthwhile celebration you need to be prepared. Sadly, not everyone thinks Christmas has anything do to do with Jesus. Lots will just enjoy the time off and lazy days by the pool or at the beach. And even though some of our families do drive us just a little crazy, many of us will still enjoy time with families and friends.
As you get ready for Christmas this year, remember that at its heart, Christmas is a celebration that God, in his great love and kindness, sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be born so that you and I could have friendship with Him and real life - eternal life. Luke 2:10-11 is a great part of the Bible reminding us of this glorious truth! “The Angel said to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
Because of this, we at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC) would love to celebrate this extraordinarily good news with you. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t usually come to Church, I know that you will find something helpful and encouraging for you and your family in the weeks leading up to Christmas itself. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with us. For example, check out our ad on this page with our ‘Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganzas’! You won’t want to miss this! We also have a Men’s Dinner, Youth and Kids Events and our Community Carols in the Park on Sunday 15th Dec at the Surveyors Creek Soft ball Fields. We’d love to see you!
In your planning for Christmas 2013 don’t forget to include Jesus, the one who started it all off! Don’t leave Jesus out of his own birthday celebration!
We’d love to see you to share the joy of this great time of year. Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635.

RSPCA NSW & Petbarn Call For Help For Animals Affected By Bush Fires The Petbarn Foundation has set up a NSW Bush Fire Appeal for pets and wildlife in need.
At the time of going to print, fires were still blazing across New South Wales. Petbarn has thrown its support behind RSPCA NSW and has launched a NSW Bush Fire Appeal through its charity arm, The Petbarn Foundation, to help animals affected by the bush fires.
Petbarn and RSPCA NSW are calling out to the community get behind the appeal and help raise funds for animals affected by bush fires. To kick-start the appeal, The Petbarn Foundation has donated $10,000, which will go directly to RSPCA NSW.
Australians can now make a donation to the NSW Bush Fire Appeal in Petbarn stores across the country or at http://www.petbarn.com.au/bushfire-appeal with 100% of funds collected by The Petbarn Foundation being donated directly to RSPCA NSW.
“The bush fires have been devastating for people across the state with more than 100 fires reported, many people losing their homes and fears of lives being lost. At this time, many animals have also been affected. We want to offer support to those people who have pets that have been caught in the disaster, as well the many animals and wildlife that have been lost in the fires,” said Paul Wilson, Director of The Petbarn Foundation.
RSPCA NSW is part of the NSW’s Government’s emergency response team. Currently, RSPCA Inspectors are working across the state to evacuate pets and livestock and transporting sick and injured animals to shelters and vet clinics where they will receive immediate attention. The RSPCA Call Centre is also at capacity fielding calls from owners in desperate need of assistance and generous supporters offering help.

MATTHEW OUR JUNIOR MP FOR MULGOAPenrith High School student Matthew Ramirez was amongst 80
young people who recently took part in the YMCA NSW Junior Parliament at NSW Parliament House.
Matthew was selected as the Junior MP (Member of Parliament) for Mulgoa, which includes Glenmore Park. He sat on the Committee investigating Education and was elected Lead Sponsor for the Education Policy and Shadow Minister for Education.
Matthew enjoyed the experience and found it invaluable. “The highlight for me were the Parliamentary debates. I was astonished to see how passionate people were and stand up for their ideals. Personally, I really enjoyed advocating for my community by conveying how the policies relate to them” said Matthew.
The role also brought with it some challenges. “The most challenging part of the role for me were the open floor debates. The open floor debates involved standing up and making an impromptu speech about the policy or issue being discussed. Participants would provide supporting arguments in favour of their own side or opposing the Opposite Members. This meant that you really had to pay attention and look hard for different perspectives and views on the issues” he said.
As the Junior MP for Mulgoa, it’s possible we may one day see Matthew as a politician. “I would like to make a change in my community, whatever that entails. That may be by becoming a local councilor, educator, MP, doctor or medical professional” explained Matthew.
When quizzed about who his favourite politician is, Matthew replied “If I had to choose, I would say that I admire my local MP, Tanya Davies, for all the work she does in our community”.
Matthew’s role as Junior MP for Mulgoa will continue for one year.

Why the Carols? There’s always a premise to most things,
an idea a thought an event which spurs us to a consequence. Part of the reason why Christianity is so established today and why the resurrection of Jesus continues to challenge people’s rationality is because there is so much historical evidence in the way of archeology
and architecture which evidences to us that something significant happened around 8AD in 1st Century Palestine.
Before the time of Jesus (in terms of buildings etc) there was no evidence of the any architecture or written text which raised the idea of resurrection apart from predictions in the Jewish Old Testaments and some other remote writings. We are not talking about the idea of a reincarnation though, the separation of spirit from the body, but a physical bodily resurrection from the dead.
That’s what Christians are convinced of and that’s why we celebrate the birth of Jesus every year. Every year we want the world to know that there was a time when God revealed his nature and attributes to us in the physical person of his son Jesus and when you see Jesus you have finally come face to face with the living God. This is why we run our Christmas Carols event each year and why we sing these songs from days gone by, because they each tell something about the birth of God’s son.
This is why we celebrate Christmas with our families and give so many presents to loved ones and friends. All these things represent the joy which we have that we can have a living and significant relationship with the creator of the world. More significant to me though is that the resurrection of Jesus does in fact lead to joy and that celebration is the spirit in which we present Jesus to the world around us. Even within the context of suffering and trials at
times, God’s people were always able to retain their joy and hope because the implications of the resurrection had so changed their futures that it impacted their present. Some of us are struggling presently because we have no future hope or purpose and we aimlessly live through life.
As we head towards the back end of this year it’s a great time to consider Christmas and why we do what we do, to remember just how great our God is and how blessed we are that he offers us true and eternal life! Now that’s worth celebrating indeed!
You are very welcome to bring the family and celebrate Christmas with us this year!Christmas Family Service Christmas Eve, 24th December @ 7pm.Christmas Day Family Service, 25th December @ 9am.Bless you, Rev Mark Bonnici

Where is God in times of disaster? As I write this column towards the end of October, New South Wales
is experiencing one of the worst bushfire crises in decades, much of the worst of the emergency occurring on our doorstep across the Nepean River in the Blue Mountains. At this stage, one man has died defending his home on the Central Coast and several hundred homes have been destroyed. It is at times like these that we cannot but help reflect on the issue of human suffering and ask ourselves where God is at such times.
Understandably, some people, even those who profess a religious faith, start to doubt if God exists at all.
Whilst it is wrong to say that God is the instigator of disasters, natural or otherwise, God is clearly evident in those who respond with such generosity and bravery by sacrificing their own time and safety to fight these fires. God is evident too in the generous and loving response of those who offer money, material goods, food and a comforting word and acts of love to those who have suffered. God is present at all times – it is a case of looking closely to identify his face at times such as these.
I’d like to share an excerpt from the statement issued by the Catholic Bishop of Parramatta, Anthony Fisher on the 18th October:
“Times of great difficulty are often also times of great solidarity. As we grieve over loss of life and property, we come together to help our brothers and sisters in Christ. We pray that the fires soon abate and that God is with those most in need in these troubling circumstances. I assure you of my prayers for the victims and their loved ones, and all the affected communities.”
On a vastly different note, I’d like to take this opportunity to briefly mention our Christmas Carols night for all the family. It will be held outside the Bethany School hall on the Padre Pio Parish grounds on Saturday, 07 December, starting at 7:00pm. Lots of fun with great singing, food and drink for sale, glowsticks, raffles and a visit from Santa! A great family night and all are welcome! More details next month.
Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and family-oriented community.
Our Mass times and contact details are as follows:• Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir• Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgyLooking forward to welcoming you!Blessings and prayers,Fr Robert Riedling

Soul MattersTIME is short and we should think about how to use it well. To forge a
life for ourselves we “manage” time to get more done in less time. Often we press on despite the stress on our marriages and kids, our physical or mental health, or our happiness level. But true happiness seems to remain out there somewhere else, not here and now. And if we keep grinding, getting 28 hours out of 24, we will find our utopia around the corner in success and security. Our busyness tells us that we are important and in control. But if we are busy we have no time to reflect
on what is important, and no time for the things that would make us happy: for relationships, love, expressing a deep-down passion, for activities that enliven our souls because they make the world better, for appreciating beauty, for hearing God.
The Bible doesn’t focus on “managing” time but appreciating it. Time is a divine gift and should not be treated like a resource to spend, manage or invest for maximum return. It should be treasured, opened with delight, used for what matters, and treated as special – a privilege. Time is for experiencing our souls alive and finding God. Our time is limited, so we must take proper responsibility for it and figure out what matters if we want to live well. Often the dying are better at living than the rest of us, because they spend time with people they love, do things they always wanted to do, and get real with God. There is an appropriate time and length of time for everything, so rather than cramming a million things into our available time, we should focus on what matters most (to God and ourselves) and give these things the time they deserve. Time for rest is important as an act of faith that God is in control, and to save us from the delusion that we are, or that we can make ourselves happy. We are to set aside special times to receive something from God or to do something for him. God is at work in our world each day by his Spirit and he invites us to get involved with him – the Source of greatest human happiness.

Don’t Be a Tosser! Bin Your Butts!
Smokers beware. Do NOT throw cigarette butts out the window, or you could earn a broken nose for your troubles, which according to an ABC listener, is exactly what happened when a man travelling north on the M1 in peak hour traffic threw his butt out the window.
While every car in the vicinity reached for their phones to dobb the perpetrator in, one man took measures to let the man know, in no uncertain terms, what act of sheer stupidity he just committed, with a fist to the nose.
If you do see anyone throwing cigarette butts out the window onto the road, phone the Environmental Protection Agency on 131 555, and report their registration plates.

Buying in a Hot MarketThe Spring buying season has definitely arrived with the property market quite active at the
moment and competing for your dream home can be tough, so here are a few tips to help.1. Have your loan Pre Approved based on your maximum purchase price and let the Real Estate Agent know that your finance is ready to go (and remember our tips for Pre Approvals from last month).2. Research. Know your market and how much you are prepared to spend.3. Move quickly. If the home is right then make an offer straight away.4. Have your Solicitor or Conveyancer lined up ready to go so that when your offer is accepted, you can get contracts signed.
The key to surviving in this market is having all your pieces in place so that when the right property comes up, you’re ready to act and having your Home Loan pre approved means that the Agent and the Seller know you’re serious.

KEEPING FIT WITH Rj Weight Loss vs. Fat Loss
Most people don’t realise there’s a big difference between losing weight and losing fat. When you focus only on the number on the scales, you may also be losing valuable muscle tissue in addition to losing weight. Calorie restricted fad diets can make you drop weight initially, but could end up damaging your metabolism over time. This can leave you looking like a smaller version of yourself with no shape or contour to your body. Some ways to ensure you’re promoting fat loss over weight loss are;• Fuel your body by eating whole, real foods that are close to their natural state and rich in protein, complex carbohydrates and good fats.• Lift heavy weights to increase your muscle, metabolism and burn fat. Remember, muscle takes up less space than fat!• Do high intensity interval training (eg; sprints) to stimulate human growth hormone and encourage muscle growth and fat burning. Healthy fat loss takes time, so be consistent and patient with yourself.

Mice Study Reveals How Brain Takes Out Garbage During Sleep *
A mice study gives new meaning to the old adage that a good night’s sleep clears the mind.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre have found that a recently discovered system that flushes waste from the brain is primarily active during sleep.
“This study shows that the brain has different functional states when asleep and when awake,” said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., co-director of the University of Rochester Medical Center’s, ‘Center for Translational Neuromedicine’ and lead author of the study.
“In fact, the restorative nature of sleep appears to be the result of the active clearance of the byproducts of neural activity that accumulate during wakefulness.”
The study, published in the journal Science, reveals that the brain’s unique method of waste removal — known as the glymphatic system — is very active during sleep, clearing away toxins responsible for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.
The researchers also found that during sleep the brain’s cells reduce in size, allowing waste to be removed more effectively.
The new findings are a result of the discovery last year by Nedergaard and her colleagues of a previously unknown system of waste removal that is unique to the brain.
The system responsible for disposing cellular waste in the rest of the body, the lymphatic system, does not extend to the brain, the researcher noted. This is because the brain maintains its own closed “ecosystem” and is protected by a complex system of molecular gateways — known as the blood-brain barrier — that controls what enters and exits the brain.
The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states — awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up,” said Nedergaard.
“You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can’t really do both at the same time.”
Another finding that startled the researchers was that the cells in the brain “shrink” by 60 percent during sleep. This contraction creates more space between the cells and allows CSF to wash more freely through the brain tissue.
So for all of us who think there is always cleaning to be done and garbage to be taken out, this study has proven us right!

The French gave the biggest Christmas present ever in 1886. It was the Statue of Liberty, and they gave it to the United States of America. (The French have one too, a smaller one, in Paris.)
Santa Claus was a real Saint. He lived in Myra in the 300s. Myra is in what’s now Turkey. The German name for Saint Nicholas is Sankt Niklaus.
The first artificial Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed.
Christmas has many, many names. Do you know some of them—aside from, of course, Christmas? How about? Sheng Tan Kuai Loh (China), or Hauskaa Joulua (Finland), or Joyeux Noel (France)? In Wales, it’s Nadolig Llawen, and in Sweden, God Jul.
“Xmas” stems from Greece. The Greek “X” is a symbol for Christ.
Riga, Latvia was home to the first decorated Christmas tree. The year was 1510. About 36 million Christmas trees are produced each year on Christmas tree farms.

How to avoid stuffing the wrong turkey! On Christmas Day, sample the food, rather than stuff yourself silly, and deal quickly with any leftovers. People often get through Christmas unscathed, but come undone when faced with the pavlova in the fridge the next day. Send leftovers home with guests, or freeze leftovers in small portions.

PARENTS’ CORNERArticle by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood ServicesPh: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.comNOTE: You may recall that last month’s sibling conflict article was to be continued
this month. Due to problems arising from the bushfires, the second part of the sibling conflict article will now be in the December issue, so keep an eye out next month. Apologies.
In her 1995 Boyer Lecture titled “A Truly Civil Society”, Dr Eva Cox, an Australian sociologist and social commentator, said that our homes can be the most toxic places for our children. She said that it was an indictment on our society that children are sometimes safer with kind strangers in early childhood services and schools than they are with family.
One of the ways of creating a safe emotional environment is to make your home a “be kind zone”. In this zone, no-one, including the adults, call each other names or tease each other. No put-downs are allowed.
This has worked very well at my place with three boys. They rarely call each other names or tease each other, but if it happens they say “that’s a put-down and that’s not allowed”. It has also made them more assertive and resilient outside the home. They don’t accept put-downs or teasing from other people.
My boys were watching the movie “Parental Guidance” during the recent school holidays. They told me that in one scene a little boy said “that’s a put-down, you owe me three put-ups” to which his sibling replied “I like your shirt, I like your shoes, I like your hair”. My boys loved this. They changed “put-ups” to “pull-ups” and made it a rule that the pull-ups had to be genuine, related to the skills and personal attributes of the person.
We all make mistakes in relationships, and sometimes our tempers or frustrations get the better of us and we say things that are less than kind. When there is a rupture in the relationship, it’s important that we focus on repairing the relationship. This is done in many different ways, and for children put-ups or pull-ups is a good way of repairing the relationship and re-establishing an emotionally safe environment.
