the three gili islands, composed of gili trawangan, gili meno and gili air are located off the northwest coast of lombok. in sasak language, "gili" means "small island. " there are more than 30 gilis around lombok but trawangan, meno and air are by far the most frequently visited. because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28c and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29c. the rainy season runs from november to april and the dry season from may to october. the gilis bathe in the bali sea, at the convergence of the indian and pacific oceans and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of

indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes- mount rinjani on lombok and mount agung on bali.like the majority of the lombok community, the inhabitants of the gili islands are primarily muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. bahasa indonesia is the national language spoken that unites all of the country’s islands but gili locals speak sasak gili air which is slightly different to sasak lombok.about 200 years ago, fishermen from sulawesi of makassar, bugis and mandar ethnicities arrived on the gili islands. they began to settle temporarily because of the

abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on gili air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. these otherwise nomadic people began to settle in the gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. they sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. coconut palms are indigenous to the gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years.

on the gili islands came in 1984 to gili air. by the mid 1990’s bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the gilis began to be known as an off-the-beaten-track paradise escape. today, the gili islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe.

les 3 îles gili, composées de gili trawangan, gili meno et gili air sont situées sur la côte nord ouest de lombok. en langage sasak, "gili" veut dire "petite île". il y a plus de 30 "gilis" à lombok mais trawangan, meno et air sont de loin les plus fréquentées. En raison de leur proximité avec l'équateur, elles ont un climat tropical toute l'année avec une température moyenne de l'air de 28˚c et une température de l'eau variant de 26 à 29˚c. la saison des pluies s'étend de novembre à avril et la saison sèche de mai à octobre. les gilis baignent dans la mer de bali et profitent d'un micro-climat, plus sec, car elles sont protégées par les volcans mont rinjani sur lombok et le mont agung sur bali.

les habitants des îles gilis sont musulmans comme la majorité des habitants de Lombok. Chaque île possède une à plusieurs mosquées dont le son des prières est émis cinq fois par jour. le bahasa indonesia est la langue nationale de l'indonésie que tout le monde parle, mais sachez qu'aux îles Gili les habitants, entre eux, parlent le sasak gili air, un dialecte, un

peu différent du sasak de lombok.

il y a environ 200 ans, des pêcheurs de Sulawesi, des groupes ethniques macassar, bugis et mandar sont arrivés sur les îles gilis. ils s'y sont installés car les eaux étaient très poissonneuses et aussi pour la présence d'eau douce sur gili air. à cette époque, il suffisait de délimiter un terrain avec une ficelle et de le nettoyer pour se l'approprier. ces pêcheurs nomades se sont donc sédentarisés et ont commencé à cultiver des cacahuètes, du tapioca et du maïs tout en continuant la pêche. ils vendaient ensuite leur produits ou faisaient du troc dans les marchés de lombok. parfois ils échangeaient leur terre contre une vache ou d'autres produits qu'ils ne possédaient pas aux îles gilis, notamment le riz. les cocotiers ont toujours été présents sur les îles, les mangues, bananes et papayes sont venues plus tard.

le premier étranger venu de l'occident est arrivé en 1984 à gili air et les premiers touristes, dans les années 90 lorsque Bali a acquis sa réputation mondiale ! aujourd'hui, les îles gilis sont de plus en plus populaires et séduisent un bon nombre de voyageurs venus de différentes horizons.

cultural identity. historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during wwii, lombok and the gili islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. a hill situated on the south of trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. trawangan derived it's name from the indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. the holes have since been filled in.

au fil du temps, les habitants des îles gili se sont adaptés à une multitude de changements et d'immersions culturelles, mais ont réussi à conserver leur identité. Historiquement, ils ont vécu des moments difficiles. pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, l'île de lombok et les gilis étaient occupées par les forces japonaises. les îles ont été utilisées pour maintenir les prisonniers de guerre et les habitants ont subi le travail forcé. une colline située au sud de trawangan a été utilisée comme poste d'observation et aujourd'hui les vestiges d'un bunker demeurent. trawangan dérive son nom du mot indonésien "terowongan" signifiant «tunnel», un réseau a été creusé par les forces d'occupation. les trous ont depuis été rebouchés.

when you hear about gili t you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? thought we should just address that straight away! gili t gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern gili islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything- including nightlife. there are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." the rumored growth of trawangan from a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques,

restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travelers. it's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping (backpacker dorms to luxury villas), entertainment and activities. gili t has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkeling. this island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities. although it is predominately known as a party island, gili t has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! seeing how life works here can be very eye-opening: it's not an escape from reality- just a slightly different one…but understandably surreal nonetheless! there are several conservation organizations based here including gili eco trust (get) and the gili shark foundation- ask around (try dive centers) about how you can get involved! as you may know- there is no motorized transport in the gilis and what a soothing break that can be! surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. for a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during ww ii.

Bien qu'elle soit surtout connue comme une île "de fête", gili t cache un nature dense et douce, aventurez-vous loin des côtes pour découvrir la magnifique cocoteraie ou les plages désertes de la côte ouest. n'ayant aucun transport motorisé aux îles gilis, la location d'un vélo est un excellent moyen de découvrir l'île, et aussi une expérience aventureuse ! la vie ici est surréaliste, c'est un mélange d'exotisme et de vie occidentale ! il existe plusieurs organisations de conservation sur gili t comme gili eco trust (get), gili shark fondation et bien d'autres... demandez autour de vous, dans les centres de plongée comment vous impliquer ! Pour un point de vue suprême, marchez jusqu'à la colline au sud, vous y trouverez un vestige (une batterie d'artillerie) de la seconde guerre mondiale.

Lorsque vous entendez parler de Gili T, vous entendez souvent dire que c'est l'île de la fête, n'est-ce pas ? la plus grande et la plus développée des trois îles gili a gagné cette réputation car elle offre un large éventail de tout y compris pour la vie nocturne. il y a des fêtes tous les soirs de la semaine qui attirent de grandes foules de tous les coins du globe ! commencez par faire un petit tour sur la place du marché pour goûter les délicieux plats locaux, puis laissez-vous tenter par le son des concerts live, des DJ résidents, dans les différents bars ou sur la plage ! il est aussi possible de visionner des films en plein air. trawangan est l'îlot du "glam" avec ses resorts, ses spas, ses restaurants chics, ses boutiques et son héliport ! C'est la plaque tournante de charme pour un grand nombre de voyageurs. trawangan est l'île du choix et convient à tous les budgets et à tous les styles de vie. que vous soyez "routards" ou que vous recherchiez un logement de grand standing, tout est possible. la nourriture est très diverse et internationale, vous aurez aussi un grand choix d'activités et de divertissements ! gili t possède de très belles plages aux eaux limpides et cristallines idéales pour la plongée et la balade aquatique en masque, palme, tuba (snorkeling). cette île possède

set between gili air and gili trawangan, gili meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the gili islands. the sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. meno is the real escape to paradise where you can fill your days with activities like diving, snorkeling, surfing or just simply taking in the tranquil views. This island is a treasure of local lifestyle where time seems to bend and life seems to slow down. it is the least developed island where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature- meno is a holiday within a holiday. here you can walk or take a cidomo (horse&cart) to attractions such as the salt lake where it's possible to spot rare blue kingfishers and the elusive island monitor lizard, or venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. there are no bicycle rentals in meno but it's possible to walk the island in an hour. gili meno offers great selections of local and western restaurants and most places serve a variety of the two. there are also traditional warungs for popular local dish- nasi campur.

there is a variety of accommodation on meno and your options range from backpacker dorms, beachfront and village bungalows to luxury villas, apartments and resorts. there is also open air baruga-style accommodation for the true outdoorsmen- er, and women! other points of interest on meno include a bird park and the turtle conservation pools (which run entirely on donations). this island is primarily popular amongst couples and those seeking a more enlightening, recharging time. yoga and meditation are up there with diving and honeymooning for making gili meno an ideal travel destination. in the past, meno was said to have a mosquito problem but this is not the case- in the wet season there are normal levels of what you would expect in a tropical place, perhaps even less, and in the dry season- tidak apa apa- no problem!!

gît au large de la côte. il n'y a pas de location de vélos à meno mais il est possible de faire le tour de l'île en une heure. gili meno propose une grande sélection de restaurants locaux et occidentaux et la plupart des lieux servent une variété des deux. il y a aussi les warungs (restaurants traditionnels) pour les populaires plats locaux comme le nasi campur. il y a aussi plusieurs options d'hébergements : baruga en plein air, bungalows en bord de mer, villas de luxe et resorts haut de gamme. autres points d'intérêt sur meno, le parc aux oiseaux (bird park) et le centre de conservation des tortues (meno turtle conservation), essentiellement financé par des

dons. cette île est surtout appréciée par les couples en lune de miel et les personnes qui recherchent une détente absolue. D'ailleurs, pourquoi pas essayer le yoga ! meno est une destination idéale pour la méditation. dans le passé, meno avait une mauvaise réputation à cause de la présence des moustiques. Il n'en est rien. il est tout à fait normal, dans un pays au climat tropical d'en croiser quelques uns, surtout en saison des pluies mais en saison sèche tidak apa apa ! (pas de problème !)

Perhaps the name rings a bell?A technical diving instructor at Blue Marlin Dive (Gili Trawangan), he holds the world record for the longest sea dive, adjudicated by judges from Guinness World Records. We introduced you to Will in Issue No. 5 of Gililife (Dec ‘13 / Jan ‘14). At the time, he was in the middle of intense training and preparation with his team to beat the world record. Well he did it!On 26th March 2014 in Gili Trawangan, Will broke the closed circuit rebreather depth record to 290m.Connaissez-vous l'incroyable Will Goodman ? after months of preparation and hours of training, will goodman’s descent took just 9 minutes, after which he had reached the depth of 290m. a rapid descent into the abyss, accompanied by substantial changes for his body: passing from

light to complete darkness, a water temperature of 30 degrees on the surface to a frigid 10 degrees, an ambient pressure of 1 bar to 40 bar.while his dive computers had all stopped working at 290m due to the very high pressure, the incredible

will resisted, completed the challenge and reached the surface with no symptoms of decompression sickness or dehydration.after only one minute spent at the 290m depth, it was time for our record-breaker to tackle the ascent.

it took a long time to return to the surface, with over 40 decompression stages, requiring a little over 9 hours and 40 minutes of work. it was a brilliant performance, welcomed by the international diving community, even if the record couldn’t be authenticated by the guinness world record judges, as there was no existing category for this event. the previous record of 283m was held by krzysztof starnwski.the record attempt was facilitated by blue marlin dive, gili trawangan, which provided full logistical support. in-water team members from around the world (pictured, left to right) included: Jeff Anastas, Theresia Gollner, Frank Cella, Jan Schmid, Will, Jeffrey Glenn and Simon Liddiard. sponsors o’three supplied exposure protection, and Liquivision provided dive computers.après des mois de préparation et des heures d'entraînement, il aura fallu seulement 9 petites minutes de descente à will goodman pour atteindre la profondeur de 290 m.une descente rapide dans les abysses, accompagnée de changements conséquents pour son organisme : passage de la lumière à

han's reef is located north east of gili air. this site is suitable for divers of all levels. a sandy floor 5m from the surface makes it easy to practise the open water course in good conditions without damaging the coral. macro lovers will enjoy looking for various species such as ghost fish, frog fish, scorpion fish and the blue spotted stingray that hides in the sand! several routes are possible, and you decide how to get around the coral. you will most

likely spot the green turtles which relax in the huge sponges there.

Also called moray beaded, dotted, speckled or guinea fowl, this moray has an elongated brown to black body, speckled with white dots and can reach over a meter in length. Their black pupils are bordered by a white circle with an orange-brown iris. The inside of the mouth is a gleaming white and has many sharp teeth. Their skin is thick and viscous allowing them to sneak into rock cavities. To breathe, they open and close their mouths constantly to feed air through their gills.Appelée aussi murène perlée, ponctuée, mouchetée ou pintade, cette murène possède un corps allongé de couleur brune à noire, moucheté de points blancs pouvant atteindre plus d’un mètre. Sa pupille noire est bordée d’un cercle blanc et son iris est de couleur brun orangé. L’intérieur de sa gueule est d’un blanc étincelant, elle possède de nombreuses dents pointues. Sa peau est visqueuse et épaisse lui permettant de se faufiler dans les cavités rocheuses. Pour respirer, elle ouvre et ferme sa gueule sans cesse pour alimenter ses branchies.

snorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins) is a good way to freely explore the waters around gili islands! you can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays... let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! you can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip - a day out on a boat. you leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. you stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. coral is made up of a colony of po-lyps, organisms which belong to the jellyfish family. each polyp lives in a rigid section composed of calcium carbonate that it secretes itself. it has a cylindrical body and a mouth surrounded by a ring of tentacles, a sort of sea anemone. corals that build reefs live in symbiosis with single-cell algae, called zooxanthel-lae. these algae, through photosyn-thesis, absorb carbon dioxide dissol-ved in sea water or created by the polyps, and feed various nutrients back to their hosts. Zooxanthellae in-crease the production of limestone, which the coral skeleton is made from, and the amount of them deter-mines the coral’s colour. coral blea-ching occurs when bad conditions mean that the coral’s zooxanthellae cannot be sustained.

my first fluorescent dive brief felt just like a marine biology lesson with birkan (aka bibi), co-manager of gili air divers who has an inexhaustible knowledge of the subject. he then introduced me to the essential equipment needed for fluorescent diving: a lamp that emits blue light and a yellow filter placed directly over my diving mask. after a description of the dive site and a quick reminder of underwater communication signs in the dark, to my astonishment we’re off to the dive site, by cidomo (horse-drawn carriage). we enter the water by the shore. not everything is fluorescent, but the fluorescence is everywhere ... it is dark around me, it's a bit of a stressful atmosphere. like a detective looking for clues, i point the beam of my lamp and discover pathways that "light up" like magic. This is a unique sensation, it feels like i’ve been projected into an enchanted world, it reminds me of the beautiful firefly forest in avatar. i then discovered that the fluorescence highlights the polyps’ tentacles, which are totally or almost invisible in daylight. fluorescence makes us well aware that corals are real living species, consisting of thousands of polyps so fragile that it is important not to touch much less hit or break them. diving friends, fans of new experiences, don’t hang about, make sure you discover the joys of fluorescent night diving in gili: on gili air and gili meno, with gili air and gili meno divers, and on gili trawangan with south sea nomads and dsm.

J'ai vécu mon premier briefing de plongée fluo comme un véritable cours de biologie sous-marine avec birkan (alias bibi), co-manager de Gili Air Divers qui est intarissable sur le sujet. il m'a ensuite présenté le matériel indispensable à la plongée fluo, une lampe qui émet de la lumière bleue et un filtre jaune à placer directement sur mon masque de plongée. après une description du site de plongée et un rapide rappel des signes de communication sous l'eau dans le noir, nous voilà parti à mon plus grand étonnement, en cidomo (charette à un cheval) vers le site de plongée. nous entrons donc dans l'eau par le rivage. tout n'est pas fluorescent, mais la fluorescence est partout... il fait noir autour de moi, c'est un peu stressant comme ambiance. a la manière d'une détective à la recherche d'un indice, je pointe le faisceau de ma lampe et découvre des formes qui "s'illuminent" comme par magie. c'est une sensation exceptionnelle, on se sent comme projeté dans un monde enchanté, cela me fait penser à la belle forêt de luciole dans Avatar. the banana is a sweet fruit with white pulp, and the name means " finger" in bantu (Pisang in indonesian). it emerged in southeast asia around 500 bc. long ignored by people, it was eventually domesticated by the chinese who gradually integrated it into their diet. nowadays, bananas are a staple of life for millions of people in developing countries. it is the most consumed fruit in the world with a global production of over 110 million tonnes. it thus represents the 4th most produced food for human consumption after rice, wheat and maize. the banana trade is unusual in that nearly 90% of production is consumed "on-site " (in the producing countries).

said to be the best left in the world, desert point still remains a surfing image of the past with clear, perfect waves amidst wild, green paradise and…no crowds. perhaps the reason this wave remains uncrowded is the same reason it came to be called “desert point”- it is far from any major city and in fact, anything at all. arriving here- you feel as if you’ve made your own discovery amongst raw, tropical villages where cheeky locals seem entertained at the sight of a foreign face. this spot is rare to say the least- where, in this day and age, the combination of surfing’s popularity boom and the convenience of modern travelling brings hoards of surfers to the world’s best breaks. however, desert point takes no small feat to reach and the wave itself remains an enigma even to the most talented surfers. but if you’re one of the dedicated and adventurous, skilled and brave, you can reap the finest benefits of riding perfect waves amongst perhaps only a few of indonesia’s best surfers.

desert point breaks off the west of south lombok’s sekotong peninsula near the fishing boat village of bangko-bangko. it is a reef break that produces powerful, hollow barrels, allowing surfers rides of up to 300m. this wave is for advanced surfers only as it is punchy and fast and breaks in shallow waters. the lucky season is may to september…

method - preparationheat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the tempeh over medium heat until slightly browned. sauté the peppers, sweet potato, garlic and onion for ten minutes. combine tempeh and vegetables in the frying pan and add curry powder, coconut milk, basil, and tamari and cook over medium heat for about ten minutes. serve with plain rice.

drinking water in the gilis is imported from narmada in lombok. it is not advised to drink tap water- even boiled. tap water is most often a mix of fresh and salt water, with fresh water coming from captured rain water and underground wells and is pumped into water towers for storage. turtle conservationgili t and gili meno each have their own sea turtle conservatories where newly hatched turtles are kept in safe pools until they can grow to a larger size and are not so vulnerable to predation. they are then set free into the waters just out the front of the conservatories. gili air's oceans 5 dive resort has special pools where sick and injured sea turtles are kept and cared for until they can be released. these conservatories and care centres run entirely on donations.Gili Meno et T ont chacun leurs propres conservatoires de tortues de mer où les tortues, nouvellement écloses sont gardées dans des bassins de sécurité jusqu'à ce qu'elles atteignent une taille assez grande qui leur permet d'être moins vulnérables aux prédateurs.
