This song is so nasty that it could easily be in the funk section too, which again illustrates the powerful influence

that we have as drummers on the global flavor of a song. After you play this song down a few times with the

grooves on this page, try grabbing a couple of the funk grooves that are introduced in the next chapter, and see

how those grooves feel with this song. You can try mixing and matching different grooves from different chapters to

experiment with what fits and what doesn’t. Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes right now; we’re practicing! I

know a few professional chefs, and they all say they had to ruin many soufflés before becoming masters of their

art. A little less sugar here and a little more butter there create something new.

Variation A is a great pattern that I think you’ll enjoy playing. It’s busy without being too thick-sounding; give it a

try, and you’ll see what I mean. Variation B . . . holy cow, what the heck is that? It looks a little intimidating at first,

but it isn’t as scary as it seems. It is an advanced groove to be sure, and unless you have some decent coordination

and hand technique, this might be a good one to skip for now. However, if you feel up for it, try it as a complement

to the main groove of the song. Again, it’s a great spice to throw in once in awhile, and if you lay it in the groove

just right, it makes people say “Ooooh, I like that!”

This chart is very clear and easy to follow. Take a close look at the first bars of the piece. For beginners, that first

bar with the four slash marks is shorthand telling you to groove in the style of the music. It’s immediately followed

by a “7 More” bar, which, of course, means to play seven more bars. So, there are total of—drum roll, please—

eight bars. Our friend, the 8-bar phrase, is back, so please don’t think of this chart as a 1+7=8 formula; it’s just an

8-bar phrase that happens to look strange on paper. It’s much more musically savvy to think of this phrase simply

as an 8-bar phrase, and count it that way. The musicians, most of whom are playing melodic instruments, will be

thinking “8” as well, definitely not “1+7.” Lastly, when the percussion drops out, you are on your own, by yourself,

to hold this baby together, so hold it together.

We learned an Afro-Cuban 6/8 groove in the original GE called a Nanigo. But what if you took the “African” portion in

the right hand and combined it with a half-time backbeat in the left? That’s the feel that Groove 84 introduces—a very

common kind of groove hybrid (especially in modern jazz and rock). As with many African-based rhythms, it’s written in

6/8 but can be felt in “four”; I count it off on the DVD that way to show you the contrast.

Really listen to and appreciate all the musical elements going on in this track: busy percussion, a quasi-classical running

piano part, very spacious bass, and a screaming guitar solo over the top. This one is going to keep you busy.

Variation A is completely stripped down and features a slightly different bell pattern, while variation B features a slick

way to displace the time by simply phrasing in groups of two. Think of it like hot red pepper: a little goes a long way.
