Lesson 16The Flam
The flam is a rudiment made up of a low tap ( grace note ) and a high stroke ( main
note ). The sticks do not strike the head at the same time, but must strike close
enough to sound almost as one stroke.
The name of the flam is taken from the main note.

Lesson 22Drags
Open Drags
The open drag stroke consists of two grace notes ( double strokes ) and a main note.
Like tñe 1am,lhe grace notes are played softly and are tight to the main note. The
rudiment is sometimes called a three stroke rulf.
ClosedDrags
The closed drag is the common drag stroke used in Pipe Band snare drumming. The
grace notes are so tight to the main note that they no longer sound like two distinctstrokes but one 'dead' stroke, hitting almost with the main note.
The grace note stroke should be practiced separately without the main stroke.
It should not be dug into the head, but played lightly. A little thumb pressure
will help control the tizz sound.
How do you know which type to play?

The General Salute is played upon the anival of the Reviewing officer at a formal

Lesson 25Finger Development
The two groups of muscles primarily responsible for making the stick move are thewrist and the fingers.
Finger action is essential for speed and detail, however the proper motion takes
some time to develoP.
Right Hand
Finger action is achieved by opening and closing the fingers into the palm,
forcìng the stick to move. Very little energy is required for this action. The tip 'of thestick will bounce in the same way a basketball is dribbled.

Practice repeated strokesincreasing the speed gradually.

Lesson 31Dynamics
Drummers have the ability to play a range of volumes from very quiet to extremelyloud. ln musical terms this is known aS "dynamics." Below is a list of signs used toindicate what volume the music should be played.

Generally, the drummer should always play in the centre of the drumdirectly over the snares. For very quiet playing try moving off the centretowards the edge of the drum.
Although dynamics aren't generally marked in pipe band drum scores, musical drummers will add dynamics into their playing.
