Johnston Middle School • Colchester, CT. City View: Pompei Italy The city of Pompeii is located off the bay of Naples Italy. The city of Pompeii dates back to the Roman Era, a time of gladiators, swordsman, and chariots. The eruption at Mount Vesuvius took place in August of 79 A.D. It was noon and the townspeople of the Roman city of Pompeii, Italy were shopping for their daily goods. Suddenly, Mount Vesuvius awoke and ashes began to fly out from the mountain top, covering the city below. The population at the time of the eruption was about 20,000 people. Today, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius is credited as one of the worst in Europe’s history. First, the city was showered in ash, as black as night, and then came the thick eye burning smoke. Finally, lava oozed from the mountain. The debris covered the land, changing the landscape completely. Pompeii was covered in thick black tar. Some city dwellers escaped the lava, while others stood their ground. The people that stood their ground perished in their homes. Pompeii’s rediscovery began in 1748 when a group of explorers were looking for ancient artifacts. What makes Pompeii so special and unique was what the explorers found under the ash of Mount Vesuvius. The explorers discovered skeletons preserved in time. The remains of people and the city appeared almost exactly the same as they did in 79 A.D. Major excavation has continued since the 17th century and today archaeologists have found that much of the city of Pompeii is still intact. Mount Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944. It had erupted 50 times between the destruction of Pompeii and 1944. They have been removing the ash and debris off of Pompeii for over 3 centuries. Pompeii is an archaeological site that is the longest continued digging site in the world. Even before Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1730 BC. The violent eruption was called the Avellino Eruption. This eruption shot millions of tons of lava, ash, and rocks 22 miles into the sky and destroyed villages within 15 miles of Mount Vesuvius. Excavation of Pompeii in the past hundreds of years has only uncovered two thirds of the city. LOCATION: Pompeii is located at 40.7462 degrees North and 14.4989 degrees East. Mount Kilauea, located on the big Island of Hawaii is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Kilauea has been continuously erupting since 1983. Though recently geologists have warned that Kilauea could soon explode in-a-once-in-a-century eruption. Like Kilauea, Mount Vesuvius, located in Italy is also considered a dangerous volcano because of its close vicinity to nearby settlements. In Pompeii in 79 A.D. there was little understanding of seismic activity, so its residents had no warning of an eruption. Today scientists are able to make predictions about volcanic eruptions and examine the many warning signs that volcanoes give us before a major eruption, such as spewing smokey toxic gas and earthquakes. Major volcanic eruptions can produce ash and lava, smokey clouds high in the atmosphere that can alter weather and change the climate. Although volcanoes can be a destructive force, there are some advantages to volcanic eruptions. Use the news, to compare and contrast why people would choose to live near volcanoes.
