Uses for Basic Search
Practice • Practice • Practice
Great for out of print books.
Great for books printed after 1900.
It never hurts to check with lending library.
Use date range for newest materials.
There is no spell check, so be careful.

Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan
1. Be nice to Inter Library Loan Department. It is cheaper than you driving or flying to somewhere else.
2. If HPL has the item you want, they will not interlibrary loan another copy. (This is really an HPL rule on interlibrary loan)
3. Remember bribery in small doses works. Bribes and compliments can be interchangeable!
4. Texas universities must share with you for free. Always use them first.
5. Genealogical materials are rarely loaned by public libraries, but universities usually will.
6. Microfilm (not fiche or microcard) is usually only loaned by universities, almost never by public libraries.
Practice • Practice • Practice
Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan
7. Always inquire about buying copies of fiche (usually 25¢ or 50¢ per sheet of fiche).
8. Books (and other stuff) made before 1900 generally do not get loaned (Hint: they may be on microfilm!).
9. Library of Congress may loan if they are only source and they have two copies and you send a groveling and pleading e-mail. They will make copies (reasonably priced) or microfilm (very expensive).
10. If book is simply unavailable for loan, inquire of stingy library to check index or photocopy names in index of interest. Then order pages from index. Good to have unlimited long distance phone plan.
Practice • Practice • Practice
Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan
11. Most of the time map photocopies are available for cheap. Some universities, if map is very rare, they will stick it to you. It’s not personal, they stick it to everyone. If alumnus or alumna, send ugly letter to Alumni Association after you get photocopy. Otherwise, accept fate.
12. For maps, microfilm, and manuscript collections (even on microfilm) from university libraries, chances are very good they have developed finding aids or even indexes on their own (undergraduate and graduate students are cheap slave labor). E-mails cost nothing and may work, but a sweet, unctuous, and solicitous phone call, completely ignoring the words genealogy or family, works better. A food thank you gift insures your questions will be welcome in the future.
