Why Implement?

delivery, purchase, etc.)• Searches OCLC licensed databases• Social networking tools• Real-time item availability & Ability to place holds

Page 3: Worldcat Local Quickstart

Implementation

• Site setup done by OCLC (usually 24-hour turnaround)

• Examine site template for customizations (tire kicking phase)

• Customization made through service configuration website (and help from OCLC)

• Training webinars offered weekly (basic and advanced)

CCSU’s Implementation

• Site was configured last summer• Worked with Reference staff and Head of Access

services on customization decisions• Help needed from OCLC to add a holdings group

for the CT State U libraries and to harmonize display logic of “Place hold” button with circulation policies.

• Preview link provided during fall 2009 semester; link to WorldCat on FS replaced in January 2010.

So, are you replacing your OPAC with WorldCat Local Quickstart?

Not yet… these are the challenges• Shared OPAC• Not all holdings included in WorldCat (batch

loading req.)• Conservative library culture – some criticism

that WC local and worldcat.org algorithm weights the popular and recent more heavily, no index displays.
