How often do firesactually break out?

Worldwide, about 4 million firesbreak out every year, claimingmore than 15,000 human lives, costing some £ 40,000 millionand causing inestimableecological and cultural damage.

Hilti firestop systems have beendeveloped to reduce the amountof damage, to protect humanlives and to avoid hazards. AllHilti products have been tested, inspected and approvedaccording to stringent standardsinternationally.

Why are firestopsystems used and howdo they work?

All system used for passive fireprevention serve the purpose ofpreventing flames, heat, smokeand toxic gases from spreadingto neighbouring rooms or otherfloors in the event of a fire.

Wherever undesirable openingscan appear because of meltingcables or pipes during a fire, intumescent materials are theanswer to the problem. Underthe influence of heat, theyexpand up to seven times theiroriginal volume quickly andeffectively and permanentlyclose openings created by a fire.

Passive Fire Resistance

"Intumescent" - what does the word mean?

It's a difficult word that had asimple explanation:intumescent means that asubstance has the physicalproperty of increasing itsvolume under the influence ofheat. Dough for bread, forexample, increases itsvolume many times in theheat of an oven.

This phenomenon has been adopted forthe working principle of some firestopproducts: they foam or swell whenexposed to the heat of a fire and thusclose cracks and gaps.

Fire is costlyEvery seven seconds a fire breaks outsomewhere in the World. In a single year, the consequences are about four millionfires, some 15,000 victims, damagecosting 70,000 million US dollars, andimmense consequential damage. The trendis rising and will continue if no preventivemeasures are taken. It is false to assumethat all outbreaks can be stopped. On theother hand, there are ways and means ofreducing the damage. One is to use Hiltifirestop systems. Fires break out withoutwarning because their causes are sonumerous. Highly flammable materialsmay be ignited by short-circuits indamaged electric lines or may even be theresult of arson. Once a fire breaks out in abuilding, it spreads rapidly due to the highpressure generated by the increase intemperature. These temperatures canexceed 1000°C and cause even large, solidbuilding components to buckle and snaplike match sticks. The fumes and gasesproduced can cause death in a short time.

Tremendous damagein Hong Kong

20 Nov, 97:5th Alarm fire in Garley Building, NathanRoad. (40 deaths, 81 injury).10 Jan 94: Shek Kip Mei Branch, Hong Kong Bank(12 deaths, 1 injury) Often, people in burning buildings haveno chance of escape because acridsmoke makes them lose their orientationand permanently injures their respiratory

systems. Thousands of people die infires every year. Damage to property isalso tremendous. Perhaps damage to abuilding can be made good throughinsurance, but cultural artefacts are lostforever for future generations. Evenwhen fire damage, such as that toproduction equipment, has beenrepaired, the consequences can oftenstill be far reaching. Hard-won marketshares might be lost from one day toanother. In this way, actual implicationsof a fire may only be felt by a companyafter many years. It might even go out ofbusiness.

Spread of fire in buildings

A supply conduit containing manyelectric lines and pipes passes throughall floors of an entire building. If a firebreaks out, it can advance twentymetres every minute through this supplyconduit. All seven floors are thenengulfed by the spreading fire in onlyone minute. And, not only large supplyconduits are a big risk, but also themany small penetrations made after abuilding is finished to install electricsupply lines and all other pipes. Manybuildings contain what are, from a fireprevention aspect, weak points of thiskind. Measures to stop fires are eithernot given consideration during thebuilding planning phase or, if so, thefirestop systems are not installedproperly. There are two approaches tostopping fire in a building: one is active

firefighting, the other the use of passivefirestop systems.

Passive firestop systems

If a fire breaks out, it should becontained in a so-called firecompartment by passive firestopsystems. To achieve this, each and everyopening or penetration in a fire wall orfloor must be sealed against the escapeof fire and fumes. Materials used for thispurpose expand in a fire and close anygaps which might result from meltedcomponents. A properly installed fireseal can prevent fire from spreading to aneighbouring room for a time of one tofour hours. As a result, escape routesare kept safe and the work of fire-fighters supported. Active fireprevention uses sprinkler systems, fireextinguishers and the fire service, andcomes into action when a fire is actuallyfought.

Why use Hilti firestop systems?Firestop representatives from Hilti provide professionaladvice about firestop systems for building owners, specifiers and installers. They work closely with customersfrom the building planning stage to the firestop installationphase to select ideal solutions or applications from Hilti’sfirestop programme. A full range of systems can besupplied by Hilti to seal joints, cable penetrations and pipe

openings in fire walls and floors. Each product has beenoptimised for the diverse requirements in buildings.Installers benefit from the easy use of Hilti firestop systems. They themselves can install the planned and necessaryfirestop systems, while resting assured that Hilti systemshave been tested world-wide and approved in accordancewith national regulations.

Compartmentation

Inhibit the spread of fire

Compartment walls, compartmentfloors, ......should be constructed suchthat all joints are completely filled withnon-combustible material to prevent thepassage of smoke or flame......

Openings through FireResisting Walls and Floors

Every opening for the passage of air-conditioning ducts, ventilation ducts, electrical trunking, conduits, pipes andwires through a compartment wall orfloor, and every holde in such a wall orfloor left after construction should beprotected with fire dampers or othersuitable form of fire stop to maintain therequired FRP of that wall or floor.

a. the sealing system should be testedor assessed in accordance with thegeneral princples for fire resistancegiven in BS476 : Part 20 : 1987;

b. the sealing system should be firmlyfixed.

Vertical Shafts

Holes in a liftwell wall around frames orreveals of life landing door indicatorpanels and lift call buttons should beproperly filled and sealed to maintain theFRP of the wall.

Protection againstSpread of Fire andSmoke between Floors

Any void formed between the curtainwall and the perimeter of the buildingonto which the curtain wall is fixedshould be solidly infilled at each floorlevel by non-combustible materialshaving an FRP of not less than thatrequired for the floor.

Special Hazards

Areas for electrical or hazardousinstallations or storing dangerous goodshould be separated from the rest of thebuilding by enclosures of non-combustible construction having an FRPof not less than 2 hours or 4 hourswhere adjoining required staircases. Anypermitted openings to such enclosuresshould be provided with a door havingan FRP of not less than 1 hour.

Basements

......that every element of construction, compartment wall and compartmentfloor in such storeys and theconstruction separating the uppermostof such storeys from the storey abovehave the same FRP as that of thebasement.

Doors

All such doors should be closely fittedaround their edges to impede thepassage of smoke or flame. The bottomgap between such doors and the floorshould not exceed 4 mm.

CP 601S is subject to surveillance by an independent inspection authority.

Application■ Joint sides must be sound, dry and free from dust, oil or grease.■ Check whether a primer is required for the substrate. Check with

Hilti application engineering for recommended primer if needed.■ In walls apply CP 601S to both sides of the joint.■ Insert backfill of non-flammable mineral wool (at least 100 kg/m3).■ Smooth firestop sealant with smoothing agent or soap

solution before the skin forms.■ Remove CP 601S firestop sealant before it cures using white spirit.

Once cured, it can only be removed mechanically.

Chemical resistance■ At room temperature the cured silicone sealant is resistant for a

short time to diluted (≤5%) acids and lyes/alkalis as well ascommercially available cleaning agents and disinfectants (except thosecontaining iodine).

■ Concentrated acids and lyes/alkalis destroy silicone rubber in time.■ Solvents and mineral oils cause cured silicone to swell.■ Consequently, proper functioning of the sealant should be

checked after exposure to a solvent / mineral oil.■ It must be remembered that the resistance of silicone rubber to

chemicals decreases with increasing temperature.■ Please contact your local sales representative or the nearest Hilti

centre if special requirements for chemical resistance have to be met.

Safety precautions■ Keep out of reach of children.■ Observe the EC safety data sheet.■ Eyes and hands must be suitably protected when working and

contact with mucus membranes or with foodstuffs must beavoided.

Penetration■ Drill through the wall/floor using Hilti DCM diamond drilling

equipment and a core bit of suitable size.■ Install the plastic pipe.

Fit the CP 649 wrap1. Clean the plastic pipe

Expansion of the intumescent material during a fire closes theplastic pipe. Very dirty pipes with, for example, remains of mortar, may lead to a delay in this closing action. Badly soiled plastic pipesshould therefore, be cleaned in the area where the CP 649 firestopwrap is installed.

2. Attach the wrapFit the appropriately sized CP 649 around the pipe so that it fitssnugly and that the product label appears on the outside of thefitted wrap. Secure the endflap of the CP 649 to itself with the self-adhesive tape fastening

3. Slide the wrap into the openingSlide the fitted wrap into the opening so that it is flush with thesoffit (if it is a floor penetration) or the face of the wall. In wallpenetration the CP 649 must be flush with both faces of the wall.

4. Back fill the openingBack fill the opening around the CP 649 with CP 636 Firestopmortar. Use formwork where necessary.Follow the instructions for mixing CP 636.For narrow openings it is possible to mix CP 636 so that it is of apumpable consistency. If the opening has been drilled and theannulus between the pipe and the hole is no greater than 10 mm,seal the opening with CP 611A intumescent firestop mastic.Remove formwork once mortar has been cured.

Notice about approvals■ When making a pipe seal using Hilti CP 649 firestop wrap, national

approvals must be observed in principle. Please refer to them forrestrictions as to opening size, type and thickness of wall or floor, maximum pipe diameter, etc.

■ For maintenance reasons, a penentration seal could bepermanently marked with an installation plate. In such a case, mark the installation plate and fasten it in a visible position next tothe seal.

Not for use...■ In drywall (use CP 642)■ In hollow core concrete floors (use CP 642)■ In penetrations for non flammable pipes, such as steel, cast iron,

cement, GFU, etc.

Safety precautions■ Keep out of the reach of children.■ Observe the EC safety data sheet.

Opening■ Clean opening.■ Cables and cable supporting structures must be installed in

compliance with local building and electrical standards.

Installing firestop cushions in wallsPut the CP 651 firestop cushions into the opening, overlapping (≥ 20 mm) and as a masonry bond (> 1/2 cushion width). Various cushion sizes (CP 615-L -S, and -XS) permit tight sealing ofremaining gaps around cables and cable runs.

Note■ When closing openings in walls less than 200 mm thick,

a firestop panel at the bottom of the opening has to be used toprovide a better bearing surface for cushions.

■ The last layer of cushions can be put in more easily with the aid of two metal sheets.

■ The seal should be secured with wire mesh to prevent anyonefrom incorrectly pulling out CP 651 firestop cushions. Cushions in small opening/seals can be secured by wire through the eyelets.

■ When closing openings in drywalls, a firestop panel on each faceof the opening has to be used to provide a better bearing surfacefor cushions.

Installing firestop cushions in floorOpenings in floors should have wire mesh (wire > 5 mm dia./mesh≤ 50 x 50 mm) secured on the underside with Hilti anchors e.g. HEH,DBZ etc. The CP 651 firestop cushions must be laid on the wire mesh, overlapping and as a masonry bond (>1/2 cushion width). Use threelayers of cushions (first layer lying, second layer standing, third layerlying). Various cushion sizes (CP 651-L, -S and -XS) permit tight sealingof remaining gaps around cables and cable runs.

Note■ Floor seals must be protected from loading and theft using

wire mesh.■ Do not use damaged cushions

Notice about approvals■ When making a cable seal using Hilti CP 651 intumescent firestop

cushion, national approvals must be observed in principle. Pleaserefer to them for restrictions as to opening size, type and thicknessof wall or floor, maximum cable diameter, etc.

■ For maintenance reasons, a penetration seal could be permanentlymarked with an installation plate. In such a case, mark theinstallation plate and fasten it in a visible position next to the seal.

Not for use...■ With folded and coiled sheet-metal or cast-iron pipes

(not tested)■ In highly corrosive surroundings■ In areas submerged in water

Safety precautions■ Keep out of the reach of children.■ Observe the EC safety data sheet.

Opening■ Clean the opening. Do not premoisten opening surfaces.■ Cables and cable supporting structures must be dry and free from

dust, grease or oil, and installed in compliance with local buildingand electrical standards.

Application of firestop coatinga) Preparation

- Mix the CP 671C coating well.- Separated water in the container must also be mixed in.- The outer edge of the mineral wool panel should be coated

with CP 671C before fitting to make it easier to cut. An appliedwet layer of about 0.7 mm gives a dry layer about 0.5 mm thick. If a precoated mineral wool panel is used, this operation isunnecessary.

b) Fitting - Cut the mineral wool panel to size. Coat the surface of the opening

with CP 671F filler and insert the panel flush with the openingedge. The opening surfaces and cables only need to be givena coating of CP 671F filler as thick as the mineral wool panel.

- Pack joints and gaps with mineral wool and coat with CP 671Ffiller flush with the surface.

c) Coating- Mask the building component with adhesive tape up to

a distance of about 2 to 5 mm from the opening.- Apply CP 671C coating to the mineral wool mat, cables and

cable tray in accordance with the dimensions (using a paintbrush, roller or airless spraygun with a 0.029” nozzle and 40˚spray angle).

- A total of two coatings are recommended to achieve a dry layerthickness of 1 mm.

- Do not dilute the coating with water.

Notes■ Re-installation: First pack tightly with mineral wool, then close the

remaining openings with CP 671F filler. Damage to the seal surfacemust be repaired.

■ Floor seal: Fit, for example, construction mesh over the openingto protect it from being walked on or otherwise loaded.

Notice about approvals■ When making a cable seal using Hilti CP 671 intumescent firestop

coating, national approvals must be observed in principle. Pleaserefer to them for restrictions as to opening size, type andthickness of wall or floor, maximum cable diameter, etc.

■ For maintenance reasons, a penetration seal could be permanentlymarked with an installation plate. In such a case, mark theinstallation plate and fasten it in a visible position next to the seal.

Consumption guide

■ This table shows the consumption of CP 671C firestop coatingwhen applying a 1 mm-thick dry layer and coating on both sidesof the opening.

■ The consumption of CP 671F and C is dependent on the numberof cut edges, the opening size, the cable space requirement andthe number of cable runs.

■ The consumption figures are only guides which do not allow forthe cable space requirement.
