From the Principal

Tigers, I want to thank parents for battling through the registration process and new phone installation at North. It has been a challenging start for both, but thankfully they are behind us and we can focus on education and school activities. It was great to see a huge turnout for Curriculum Night last week. Meeting teachers and navigating the hallways is a great opportunity to develop relationships and walk a few steps in students’ shoes. Student success is best accomplished when we have a partnership between teachers and parents. I strongly encourage all of you to communicate with teachers as necessary throughout the school year. Keeping up on grades, assignments, concerns, and other items will help keep students on the right track and avoid surprises down the road. Dean’s Office

It is refreshing to see that we are off to another suc-cessful start here at North. I want to take a moment to inform you of several changes that were approved over the summer.

-As many of you may have already experienced, we are now checking bags at all home football games. We strongly encourage you to leave all bags in your vehicle so that you don’t have to wait in line longer than necessary.

-Students are now allowed to text and listen to music in the hallways during passing periods and in the café during lunch. Phones should still not be seen or heard in academic settings.

-In an attempt to proactively partner with the Plain-field Police Department regarding the growing trend of students vaping on campus, students will now receive a $250 fine each time they are caught with a device in their possession. The fines doubles to $500 if the device is found to have THC in it. Fines from the PPD will also be met with the appropriate discipline consequences.

Special Education

Tiger Mart will be selling spirit wear through an online store. Orders are due September 7th.

Here is the link: https://www.agpestores.com/bigfrognaperville/groups.php

Our Vocational Education class will be hosting a fundraiser from September 10th through September 24th. Profits from sales will go towards maintaining and supporting in-school work training opportunities for students who participate in Vocational Education class. A link to the online catalog will be provided on September 10th! Thank you for supporting our class-room!

Physical Education / Health / Drivers Ed

Physical Education classes started the year with students

choosing PE lockers and getting situated in the locker room.

Students are to use school issued locks from any District 202

school. Students are encouraged to lock up their belongings

during class and after class. If students lose a lock or have

any other locker issue, please have them speak to their

teacher about the situation. Teachers are looking forward

to a fun semester and helping to encourage students at

PNHS to know how exercise can positively impact their

mood, academics, and stress levels.

Driver Education class and BTW (behind the wheel)

Current driver education students are learning valuable

information in the classroom. Please be sure to allow your

students to gain driving hours and log them on the 50-hour

log sheet. Remember that students need 10 hours of night

time driving within those 50 hours.

Here is a link to the 50-hour log sheet: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_x152.pdf We are currently finishing up drivers with behind the wheel

instruction from last year. Once the instructors are finished

with those students, they will start contacting the students

in driver education class by birthdate order to try to sched-

ule those lessons. The instructors drive before and after

school. There are two instructors that drive for one hour

before school. There is a 5:30 a.m. and a 5:45 a.m. start

time. After school drive times start at 2:30 p.m. and typically

go until 4:30. There is an instructor that also drives from

4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Health Classes:

This year health classes will be going more in depth into

health and wellness by researching current health topics

once a week and discussing the article in class. Teachers

hope by adding this approach to the curriculum, stu-

dents will see more of a connection to what they are

learning about in Health and what is happening in the

world around them.

Fine Arts / World Languages

The Creative Arts Division is pleased to welcome the following staff members to PNHS:

Career and Technical Education – Megan Hoyer and Jessica Rottmann will be teaching Culinary and Child Development courses.

World Languages – Brittany Kancauski, though not new to Plainfield, will spend part of her day at North teaching German. Emily Pomrening is joining the department as an American Sign Language instructor.

French classes are off to a great start! In French 1 we have chosen Francophone names to use as we are learning how to greet each other. Next, we will be learning how to discuss the weather. French 3H classes are reviewing how to talk about the past while using new vocabulary about childhood hobbies. Next, we will be learning how to talk about our future plans after high school. French 4/AP is starting off the year with the theme Global Challenges. In the coming weeks we will be reading news articles, analyzing a satirical song about the environment, and discussing our opinions on how to solve current issues.

German 1 will be embarking on their journey into the German language. They will be learning the alphabet, their numbers, and their greetings. Students will be creating comic strips and even having conversations with each other, all in the target language throughout the month of September!

German 2 students will begin with our new textbooks by learning about the past tense. Through this unit, the students will get to play several games and will even write themselves a letter that will be put into a time-capsule and given back to the student at the end of their senior year. This is one of the students’ favor-ite activities as they love to not only see how far they have come in German, but they also love to reminisce about the “good old days” by the time they are ready to graduate.

German 3 students will be reading a story about An-ton and his first day of school. Young students in Ger-many receive Schultuete to start their first day of school. These are often filled with school supplies and special treats to start the school year off right and our students will then get to create their own Schultuete in class!

German AP students will begin their unit on personal and public identities. In this unit, we talk a lot about immigration and Germany’s impact on the United States. Students will be researching a famous German-American and giving a presentation about what it was like for that person to make their way to America. Some famous German-Americans are: Milton Hershey, Babe Ruth, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, John Steinbeck, Meryl Streep, Marlene Dietrich, and the list goes on!

Math and Science

Math and Science departments are starting the year strong. Science classes reviewed safety contracts and scientific method. Math is jumping right into Spring-board lessons and Activities. Please encourage your students to set some time aside everyday to complete homework and review the day’s lesson. Practice is the key to success, especially in these curricular areas.

English and Social Studies

I would like to take this chance to introduce myself as

the English and Social Studies Division Chair at Plain-

field North. My name is David Brown, and I am ex-

tremely excited to begin my third year in this role. It

has been awesome welcoming back the staff and stu-

dents over the last few weeks, and I look forward to

another great year.

English

English classes are still in the beginning stages of each

course with teachers and students working hard to

build positive relationships that will help foster

growth and success throughout the year. Students

have been doing introductory class work along with

pre-testing on skill based assessments. Teachers will

be moving into more specific curriculum associated

with the Outcome A for their respective classes over

the next few weeks.

staff members to North for the 18-19 school year.

Ms. Noor Fakhoury will be teaching English 1 and Eng-

lish 1 Honors.

and Rhetoric.

Social Studies

The Social Studies department looks to continue to

implement practices to promote the “Democracy

School” distinction awarded to Plainfield North prior

to the 16-17 school year. The recognition is awarded

by the Illinois Civic Mission Coalition to recognize

schools that have a “commitment to civic learning

across the curriculum and developing organizational

supports that will help give young people in Illinois the

knowledge, skills, and dispositions to nurture and sus-

tain our democracy.” The department is excited to

provide more opportunities for students to engage in

real life, civic learning.

The Social Studies department WELCOMES the follow-

ing staff members for the 18-19 school year:

College Information Sessions @ PNHS

Each fall, PNHS invites college and universities to provide information sessions to prospective students. All students are invited to sign up and attend. Students can view the full list of colleges in Naviance Family Connection and are urged to pre-register. Students must pick up a pass from Student Services the morning of the visit to be excused from class. All vis-its take place in the College and Career Center (Rm #300). Students should research the college ahead of time and prepare a few questions to ask during the visit. Many times, the college representative that visits is the main point of contact for the admissions process. **Dates and times are subject to change – view the most current list on Naviance.
