Welcome to the 28th Annual Friends of Acadia Benefit!

The second Saturday in August has become a highlight of the summer season on MDI: friends, artists, businesses, and donors all gather together to celebrate Acadia and renew their commitment to supporting their beloved park. Every year since 1990, volunteers have held planning meetings, rallied their friends, found new and exciting auction items, folded napkins, arranged flowers, and more—all to help preserve and protect Acadia National Park. This collective effort has resulted in over $11 million raised since the Annual Benefit’s inception.

As we look forward to our 28th Annual Benefit, we are grateful for the leadership of our Benefit Chair, Donna Eacho, and the Benefit Committee who has planned an incredible night. We invite you to dive into this catalog, take a look at the live and silent auction items, take note of the local businesses and corporate sponsors who are helping to underwrite the Benefit, as well as the volunteers and patrons who are the secret to our success.

We are especially excited to draw your attention to the Paddle Raise on page 10. This year funds raised during the Paddle Raise will help restore historic structures of Acadia including the Jordan Pond and Brown Mountain gatehouses as well as the Gilley House and Keeper’s House on Baker Island. These structures are as quintessentially Acadia as the rugged coastlines, granite summits, and sweeping views that make this park so special.

By participating in the Annual Benefit—whether bidding on live or silent auction items at the event, sending in an absentee bid, or simply attending the event or making a donation in support of it—you will make a real and lasting difference in preserving Acadia. Engaging young people in the park, helping to solve transportation challenges, restoring ecosystems, and maintaining and improving trails and carriage roads will all become more important as Acadia enters its second century, and your generosity will ensure that we have the resources to meet these challenges.

A Piece of Benefit History—Wildflowers of Mount Desert Needlepoint Rug In the summer of 1999 the Benefit Committee sold raffle tickets all summer long in the lead up to the 10th Annual Benefit for this one of a kind, hand-stitched, labor of love that raised over $32,000 for Acadia. The six volunteer stitchers were Benefit Committee members Mrs. William Crane, Mrs. Curtis Blake, Mr. John Harvey, Mrs. William R. Norris, Dr. Joseph Rossi, and Mrs. Albert Goodhue. This beautiful home is ski-in/ski-out to Elkhorn ski run that leads to the bottom of the Six Shooter lift. Raise Your Paddle to Help Restore Historic Structures of Acadia We love Acadia for its magnificent scenery: granite summits, sparkling lakes, bold coastlines. And we love Acadia for its cultural treasures: world-class hiking trails, the carriage roads with their exquisite bridges, and other iconic structures. In fact, it’s the interweaving of natural and built landscapes that makes this place so special among national parks.

But many of Acadia’s historic buildings are sorely in need of restoration to ensure their long-term survival. The Brown Mountain and Jordan Pond gatehouses require both interior and exterior renovations, including reconstruction of the wooden gates originally intended to protect the carriage roads from motorcars. And on Baker Island, the Gilley Family House and the Keeper’s House have been closed to visitors for many years due to hazardous conditions—both need to be restored so that visitors can go inside for a more intimate look at the Gilley family’s island life.
