Baptisms take place the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Parents and God-parents are required to attend the pre-baptismal class prior to Baptism. Pre-Baptismal class take place the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Today’s reading offers three significant messages:

Jesus revealed the awesome compassion and providence of God.

We, the Church, are like this crowd, always seeking and finding Jesus Christ.

Jesus showed the qualities that anyone in a position of leadership must have.

Gospel reading ( Mark 6: 30 - 34) Evangelio ( San Marcos 6, 30 – 34)

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Today’s text prepares the readers for the first miracle of the multiplication of the bread. Although the Twelve were tired and needed time alone with Jesus, he responds first to the greater need of the crowd. He felt compassion toward them because “they were like sheep without a shepherd.” This is probably a reference to the Good Shepherd of Ezekiel 34:15. Jesus satisfied their spiritual hunger by teaching them many things, thus gradually becoming the shepherd of a new Israel, the new people of God.

As the chapter continues, Mark will show his readers that Jesus could satisfy both the spiritual and the physical needs of the crowd. He will provide food for the people just as God had provided “manna” for the Israelites as they wandered in the desert.

Brief commentary

La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes: Jesús reveló la increíble compasión y

providencia de Dios. Nosotros, como Iglesia, somos iguales a la

muchedumbre del evangelio: siempre buscando y encontrando a Jesús entre nosotros.

Jesús nos enseñó las cualidades que todo líder debe poseer.

En aquel tiempo, al volver los apóstoles donde estaba Jesús, le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y lo que habían enseñado. Entonces él les dijo: “Vamos aparte a un lugar tranquilo para descansar un poco”. Porque eran tantos los que iban y venían que no les quedaba tiempo ni para comer. Y se fueron solos en una barca a un lugar despoblado. Pero la gente, al verlos partir, adivinó hacia dónde iban. Y salieron por tierra de todos los pueblos, con tanta prisa que llegaron antes que ellos. Al bajar Jesús de la barca, vio todo ese pueblo y sintió compasión de ellos, pues eran como ovejas sin pastor, y se puso a enseñarles largamente.

Esta sección en el Evangelio de Marcos es conocida como la “sección de los panes”. Los versículos que leemos hoy nos preparan para la narración de la multiplicación de los panes. Aunque los discípulos estaban cansados y Jesús quería darles un rato de descanso con él, no lo consigue. Jesús interrumpe el prometido tiempo libre para atender a las necesidades del pueblo que no le dejaban tiempo ni para comer. Nos dice Marcos que Jesús sintió compasión porque eran “como ovejas sin pastor”. Esto nos recuerda la imagen del Buen Pastor de Ezequiel 34:15. Jesús es el pastor de la nueva Israel, el pueblo nuevo de Dios. Al continuar el relato, Marcos presenta a Jesús como el Mesías que calma el hambre física y espiritual de todo ser humano. Esta escena nos recuerda cómo Yahvé alimentó al pueblo de Israel con el maná que bajó del cielo cuando sufrían hambre en el desierto.

The School of Ministry is looking for parishioners with great love for the Church and a desire to grow deeper in their faith for the Class of 2015 – 2017. The traditional in-classroom lay ministry program as well as the online program offer the opportunity to draw closer to Jesus, to gain a greater understanding of the Catholic beliefs, and to learn how to better serve the community.
