Dear Fourth Avenue UMC Friends,
As I write this column for the Fourth Teller, I am excited
about the milestones in faith that we will be celebrating in
the next few days. This Saturday, September 28, we will be
celebrating the sacrament of baptism for Comfort Sonpon (by immersion)
and on Sunday, September 29, we will be celebrating Confirmation Sunday
for five youth in our church family. These are significant milestones along
the journey of faith for a young Christian and the evidences of the Holy
Spirit’s work in our church’s disciple-making ministries. It is our joy and
privilege to witness these holy moments, to renew our own faith in Christ
and renew our own discipleship, and pledge to care for one another’s souls.
Our Confirmation class has been meeting weekly since last November. We
have been formed as a supportive Christian community as we prayed for and
with each other, learned about the truths of the Christian faith, talked about
what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, reported where we’ve seen God at
work in our lives, committed to memory 26 scripture passages (one with a
key word from every letter of the alphabet) and the Apostles’ Creed, exam-
ined evidence of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, walked through the seasons
of church calendar, served at worship as acolytes and scripture readers,
engaged in meaningful service through a week at STORM Camp and by
doing some outdoor work for a family in our congregation.
As we closed each of our gatherings, we spoke these inspiring words of John
Wesley as a vision for our Christian lives, “Do all the good you can, by all
the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all
the times you can, as long as ever you can.” These are some of the
highlights of our journey together.
(continued on page 2)
Celebrating Milestones in Faith, Renewing our Discipleship
Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee,
where he preached God’s Good News.
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced.
“The Kingdom of God is near!
Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”

“Come to [Fourth Avenue UMC] this World Communion Sunday prepared
to participate in the sacrament of Holy Communion. As you receive the
bread and cup, remember that you are part of the Church Universal, unit-

The Care Visitors that have joined the Senior Care Team have been warmly appreciated for the visits already happening. The team is small but mighty. More members are invited to join them in bringing a listening ear along with fellowship and friendship to our more vulnerable members. Contact Ronn Kotsmith, 332-6917 to join the team.
Ronn is also looking for someone to help him deliver communion to members who cannot make it into church.

Faribault Prays Recap
On September 6-7 our church joined with other churches in town to again hold
a 24 hour prayer walk to pray for the town of Faribault. Those from Fourth Ave-
nue who walked included Ronn Kotsmith, Liz Hartman, Julie Schiffer, Sharon
Nelson, Irene Eiler, Deb Jindra-Pope, Shari VanDerVeen, and Pastor
Ciesluk. After the walk, a "wrap up" service was held at 4th Avenue with worship, prayer, testimo-
nies, and some great praise music and singing, led by our own Praise Band. It was an exciting and
inspiring service and a reminder of how vital prayer is to our community.
Memory Verses for October John 3:16-17 New Revised Standard Version
16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may
not perish but may have eternal life.
17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him.

Changetochill.org—Mental Health Info and Training
September was Suicide Prevention Month, but a mental health crisis knows no calendar.
You are invited to attend a free Change to Chill training session!
Change to Chill is a free, mental well-being program offered by Allina Health. Change to Chill helps teens become more aware of the things that stress them out and equips them with relevant tools and resources to better manage stress and anxiety, so they can live happier, more resilient lives. To address these
requests we are hosting free training sessions open to the community.
The free Change to Chill training sessions are designed for school staff, mental health profession-
als, community organizations and parents of teens.
Change to Chill Train the Trainer session will:
a. Provide educators and members of community groups with knowledge about teen stress;
b. Demonstrate ready-to-use, plug-and-play lessons and DIY activities, including foundations of
mindfulness, athlete-specific content, the new Action Guide for Teens and more;
c. Facilitate participant sharing and discussion time to generate program application ideas and
provide time for community networking;
d. Provide educators and members of community groups with the skills to implement Change to Chill in a school, home or community setting and the knowledge to train others about program components that fit their needs.
There is no cost to attend this training. Light and healthy snacks will be served. A certificate of participation will be provided to each attendee.

Since Wesley’s time, giving has been both local and connectional (beyond each local church), and was understood as a corporate or community responsibility that allowed every member of whatever means to participate. This joint stewardship has always been understood as a way of undergirding organizational needs in ministry, church expansion, and, later, in pension support for clergy.
Apportionments are the share each annual conference or local church pays to support international, national, and local missions. Some of the funds remitted by Minnesota congregations stay within the state and help fund various Minnesota Conference programs and mission efforts, and about a quarter of the funds remitted by local churches go to the global United Methodist Church. Apportionments also pay for the internal support system that allows for 100 percent of “second-mile” giving (to Imagine No Malaria and other Advance Specials) to go to the intended mission or ministry.
Together, through our connected congregations, we accomplish what no single church, district or annual conference ever could hope to do alone. In this way, each individual, each family, each congregation gives a fair share for the church's work. We combine our prayers, presence, gifts and service to make a significant difference in the lives of God's people.
The amount of money each congregation is asked to pay is determined by a formula that, in Minnesota, is based 15% on each congregation’s number of members and 85% on each congregation’s expenditures for the last three years.
2019 Apportioned Budget (MN Conference of the United Methodist Church)
The 2019 apportioned budget of $6,327,706 was approved by members of the Minnesota Annual Conference on June 1, 2018. This is within our ceiling guidelines with a 2.4% increase over our 2018 approved budget. With the uncollectible contingency of $725,000, the total to be apportioned for 2019 is $7,052,706.
The 2019 budget is organized and aligned around our primary work expressed in the missional areas below.
More detailed information about apportionments and the 2019 Conference Budget can be found on the

October M and M Circle meets Wednesday, October 16th at 1:00 in the FAUMC library. . The program will be Economic Justice part 2 led by Joyce Buresh.
In September the ladies watched the U of M YouTube presentation of “Jim Crow of the North.” What a surprise to see how the Mapping of Hennepin County created areas of segregation in our own Minneapolis, MN. When the interstate highways were built in the 60’s, the east west route used Rondo Street which split the black community in half with few connections. Join the ladies to continue the spirited discussion in the month of October.

In the news we have watched the concerned youth of our nation marching to effect changes in the world’s policies and actions affecting and effecting climate change. Our United Methodist Women organization has chosen to stand with them in their protests.
(Source: unitedmethodistwomen.org website) “September 10, 2019, NEW YORK – United Methodist Women, the largest denominational organization for women, publicly applauds the global student climate strike that took place on Sept. 20 through Sept. 27. The organization released the following statement ex-pressing solidarity with the youth strikers:
“Air pollution not only puts my home at risk but puts the health of youth and children across the nation in jeopardy,” said youth climate advocate and United Methodist Women intern Sarah Son. “While we can make more sustainable changes in our personal lives, like using reusable utensils or taking clean public transportation, it’s up to the administration and law-makers to make systematic changes that will address the issue of climate change at hand and in the future.”
“My responsibility as a mother, a woman of faith and an advocate for climate justice is to take action that
will set future generations up for success,” said Elizabeth Chun Hye Lee, executive for economic and
environmental justice and climate justice lead, Christian Social Action for United Methodist
Women. “As United Methodists, we live out our commitment to faith when we work to ensure current and
future generations have a chance to live in safe communities,” Lee said.
“Jesus said ‘suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven,’” said Harriett Jane Olson, general secretary and CEO of United Methodist Women. “Young people are coming. The question is will we forbid them, or will we work in solidarity with them? As for me and my house , we will center the leadership of young people and help them inherit an environment in which they can be proud.”
Let us stand together with our youth in the fight against climate change!
