Pastoral Letter Dearly beloved,

Greetings to you in the matchless name of our

Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

November is a preparatory period of Christmas. BMC

committee has decided to utilize the season of Christmas more for spreading the

message of Christmas around rather than having internal celebrations. Let us use all

our effort, energy and time optimally in witnessing Jesus, in the words Jesus becom-

ing salt and light to the world. "You are the salt of the earth...Let your light so shine

before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:13,16

The metaphor our Lord said was ‘salt and light’ not ‘salt or light.’ The point is

that we need to be both salt and light, living like a salt that becomes invisible in the

food and produces taste and like a light that shines visibly before everyone’s eyes.

We should stand and work in the forefront and other times very silently in an unrec-

ognized manner. Discouragements, humiliation and absence of recognition are all

the components of witnessing ministry. The Lord duly honours our sincere services to

him. Let our witnessing lifestyle get strengthened day by day.

Salt should not lose its savour and the light its brightness. We should be

potent in our conviction, attitude, behaviour and maturity and the like qualities that

will serve as salt and light in our families, family circles and neighbourhood relation-

ships. Witnessing to the Lord is innermost want of life that fulfils the purpose of God

on earth. “No man is worth his salt who is not ready at all times to risk his body, to

risk his well-being, to risk his life in a great cause.” Said T. Roosevelt. Let us keep this

in our mind as we move on.

We praise God for the two Harvest Festivals celebrated in English and Tamil

services with cheer and joy. Let us keep spirit of giving to the Lord as lively as possi-

ble and use the offerings to build the kingdom of God as wide as possible in our

times. I thank the Lay Activity committee, Women’s Fellowship, Youth Fellowship, all

the volunteers and participants who made the Festival a meaningful occasion. Thanks

to Dr. Solomon and Bro. John Prashanth for conducting informative and inspiring

teaching sessions on Prayer and Witnessing respectively. Please pray and participate

in the POWER TO CHANGE a city-wide gospel communication effort in this month. I

deeply mourn the passing away of Pastor Srikanth, a faithful servant of God who

worked among the blind people through Light Ministries which our BMC WSCS sup-

ported a part. Grace be with you always!

ப ோதகர் மடல் கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் பிரியமானவர்களே,

நமது ஆண்டவரும் இரட்சகருமாகிய இளயசு கிறிஸ்துவின் ஈடு இணையற்ற நாமத்தில் வாழ்த்துக்கள்,

நவம்பர் மாதத்தில் கிறிஸ்துமஸ் காலத்திற்கான ஆயத்தங்கணே நாம் ததாடங்குகிளறாம். ஆலயத்திற்குள்ோன தகாண்டாட்டங்கணேக் காட்டிலும், கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பின் நற்தசய்திணய மற்றவர்களுக்கு பணறசாற்றுவதில் அதிகமாக நாம் பைியாற்ற அணைக்கப்படுகிளறாம். ஆகளவ, நமது உணைப்ணபயும் ளநரத்ணதயும் இளயசுவிற்கு சாட்சியாக வாழ்வதிற்கு ளநராக திருப்புளவாமாக. இவ்வுலகத்திற்கு உப்பாகவும் ஒேியாகவும் விேங்க அவர் நம்ணம அணைத்திருக்கிறார்.”நீங்கள் பூமிக்கு உப்பாயிருக்கிறரீ்கள்...மனுஷர் உங்கள் நற்கிரிணயகணேக் கண்டு, பரளலாகத்திலிருக்கிற உங்கள் பிதாணவ மகிணமப்படுத்தும்படி, உங்கள் தவேிச்சம் அவர்கள் முன்பாக பிரகாசிக்கக் கடவது”. மத்ளதயு 5:13, 16

நாம் உப்பாகளவா அல்லது ஒேியாகளவா இருக்க அணைக்கப்படவில்ணல; மாறாக, உப்பாகவும் ஒேியாகவும் (இரண்டு அம்சங்களும்) நம்மில் ளவண்டும். உப்பு உைவில் காைப்படாதிருந்தும் சுணவ அேிப்பது ளபால் பல சமயங்கேில் அணமதியாக உணைத்து தாக்கத்ணத ஏற்படுத்த ளவண்டும். ளமலும் பிற பல சமயங்கேில், அணனவரும் காணும் ஒேிணயப் ளபால் முன்னில் நின்று பைியாற்றி கிறிஸ்துவின் நாமத்ணத மகிணமப்படுத்தளவண்டும். ளசார்வு, ஏமாற்றம், அங்கீகரிக்கப்படாமல் ஒதுக்கப்படுதல் ஆகியணவ கிறிஸ்தவ ஊைியத்தில் ளநரலாம். ஆனால் கிறிஸ்து உண்ணமயான ஊைியத்திற்கு ஏற்ற பலணன அேிப்பார்.

உப்பு தனது சாரத்ணதயும், ஒேி தனது தவேிச்சத்ணதயும் இைக்கலாகாது. நாம் நமது அணைப்பில் உறுயாய் நிணலத்திருந்து, அதற்ளகற்ற முதிர்ச்சியுடன் தசயல்பட்டு, நமது தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும், குடும்ப வாழ்விலும், சமுதாயத்திலும் உப்பாகவும் ஒேியாகவும் விேங்க அணைக்கப்படுகிளறாம். ஆண்டவருக்கு சாட்சியாக வாழ்வளத இந்த பூளலாக வாழ்வில் அவரது ளநாக்கத்ணத நிணறளவற்றுவதாகும். “தன்னுணடய உடணலயும், நலணனயும், வாழ்ணவயும் எந்நிணலயிலும் அர்ப்பைிக்காதவனால் கிறிஸ்துவிற்கு உப்பாக வாைமுடியாது” என்றார் ரூஸ்தவல்ட். இதணன நாம் கருத்தில் தகாண்டு முன்ளனறுளவாமாக.

ஆங்கிலம் மற்றும் தமிழ் ஆராதணனகேின் அறுப்பின் பண்டிணகக்காக நான் ளதவணன துதிக்கிளறன். கிறிஸ்துவிற்காக நன்றியுடன் நமது வாழ்ணவயும் நம்ணமயும் எப்தபாழுது அர்பைிக்க தயாராக இருக்களவண்டும். அறுப்பின் பண்டிணகக்காக உணைத்த அணனத்து குழுக்களுக்கும் எனது நன்றி. தெபத்ணதக் குறித்தும் சாட்சியான வாழ்ணவக்குறித்தும் மிக அருணமயாக பகிர்ந்துதகாண்ட டாக்டர் சாலமன் மற்றும் திரு ொன் ப்ரஷான்த் அவர்களுக்கும் எனது நன்றி. நமது பட்டைத்தில் நவம்பர் மாதத்தில் நிகழும் “மாற்றித்திகான வல்லணம”


(Power to change) என்ற சுவிளசஷப்பைியில் தெபத்துடன் கலந்துதகாள்ளுங்கள். கண்பார்ணவயற்றவர்கள் மத்தியில் சிறப்பாக ஊைியம் தசய்தவரும் நமது தபண்கள் குழுவினரால் ஆதரிக்கப்பட்டவருமாகிய ளதவ ஊைியராகிய ளபாதகர் ஸ்ரீகாந்த் அவர்கேது மணறவிற்காக வருந்துகிளறன்.

மகோ சந்பதோஷம் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்க்ணக ஒரு சந்ளதாஷம் நிணறந்த அனுபவமாகும். ஆனால் அதற்கு மாறாக, நாம் சில ளநரங்கேில் புன்னணகளயா, சிரிப்ளபா இன்றி தநாந்து ளபான உைர்வுகளுடனுளம ளபசவும், பைகவும் தசய்கிளறாம். உண்ணம கிறிஸ்தவனுக்கு சிரமங்கள் உண்டு. கஷ்டங்களும் பிரச்சணனகளும் உண்டு. ஆயினும் பாடுகேின் நடுவில் அவன் வாழ்ந்தாலும், வியாகுலத்தின் தவேிப்பாடாக இராமல் கர்த்தருணடய சந்ளதாஷத்தின் தவேிப்பாடாகளவ அவன் விேங்குவான்.

கர்த்தருக்குள் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் இருத்தல் என்பது ஆவிகுரிய உன்னதமான அனுபவங்கேில் ஒன்று. ஏதனன்றால், ளவதறங்கும் நம்முணடய மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு உத்திரவாதம் இல்ணல. நாம் மகிழ்ச்சியாயிருக்க பல வைிகள் உண்டு என்பது உண்ணம. பைம், தபாருள், ஆஸ்தி, பதவி, அதிகாரம், ளகேிக்ணக ளபான்றணவகேிலும் நாம் மகிழ்ச்சிணய தபற முடியும். ஆனால் இன்று மகிழ்ச்சிணயத் தந்த பைம் நாணேக்கு அதணனத் தருமா என்று கூற இயலாது. இன்று நம்ணம சந்ளதாஷப்படுத்திய உறவுகோல் நாணே நமக்கு சந்ளதாஷம் கிட்டும் என்பதற்கு உறுதியில்ணல. ஏதனன்றால் நமது இருதயம் எந்ததந்த ளநரம் எப்படிப்பட்ட தன்ணமளயாடும் உைர்ளவாடும் இருக்கும் என்று கூற இயலாது. ளநற்று எணவகோல் அது சந்ளதாஷப்பட்டளதா இன்று அணவகோல் சந்ளதாஷப்பட இயலாமல் ளபாய்விடலாம்.

ஆனால் கர்த்தருணடய சமுகம் அப்படியல்ல. அது எந்த ளநரத்திலும் நம்ணம சந்ளதாஷப்படுத்தும் ஆற்றல் மிக்கது. கிறிஸ்துளவாடு தங்கேின் வாழ்க்ணகணய இணைத்துக்தகாண்ட ஒவ்தவாருவருக்கும், கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் உலகம் தர இயலாத ஒரு சந்ளதாஷம் ணவக்கப்பட்டுள்ேது. அந்த ததய்வகீ சந்ளதாஷத்ணத அனுபவிக்க நாம் தவறக் கூடாது. ஏதனன்றால் மறுபடியும் பிறத்தலால் வருகின்ற ஒரு முக்கியமான பிறப்புரிணம அது. விசுவாசத்திலும், ளதவ ஐக்கியத்ணத ளதடுவதன் மூலமாகவும் அந்த சந்ளதாஷம் நம் உள்ேங்கேில் பாய்ந்து நம்ணம மகிழ்ச்சியாக்கும்.

சங்கீதம் 90:14 இதணன நமக்கு அைகாக குறிப்பிடுகிறது. “ நாங்கள் எங்கள் வாழ்நாதேல்லாம் கேிகூர்ந்து மகிழும்படி, காணலயிளல எங்கணே உமது கிருணபயால் திருப்தியாக்கும்” எனளவ ளதவ உறவினால் நம்ணம சந்ளதாஷமாக மாற்றும் ஆவிக்குரிய அனுபவத்தில் நாம் உறுதியாய் இருக்க ளவண்டும்.

ஒரு மாணல ளவணேயில் சிறு பறணவகள் தணரயில் இருந்த தநல்மைிகணே தின்றுதகாண்டிருந்தணத ஒருவன் கூர்ந்து கவனித்தான். அவன்

அப்பறணவகேின் அருகில் தசல்லச் தசல்ல அணவகளுக்குள் பதட்டம் காைப்பட்டது. அவன் மிக அருகில் தசன்றவுடன் பறணவகள் பறந்து தசன்றுவிட்டன். அவன் அணவகளுக்கு எந்த தீங்கு நிணனக்காவிடினும் அவனுணடய உருவத் ளதாற்றத்தால் அணவகள் பறந்ளதாடின.

பணைய ஏற்பாட்டின் நாட்கேில் கர்த்தர் ஆபிரகாமுக்கும் ளமாளசக்கும் பல நிணலகேில், பல விதங்கேில் தம்ணம தவேிப்படுத்தினார். அது இஸ்ரளவலருக்கு கர்த்தணரக் குறித்த ஒரு பயத்ணத ஏற்படுத்தியது. ஆனால் “கர்த்தராகிய கிறிஸ்து என்னும் இரட்சகர்” (லூக்கா 2:11) நமக்காக மனிதனாய் பிறந்திருக்கிறார். அவர் நம்ணம விசாரிக்கிறவர் ஆனதால், நம்முணடய கவணலகள், பயங்கள், ளசார்வுகள், எல்லாவற்ணறயும் அவரிடம் விட்டுவிடலாம். நம் ளதவன் மனிதனானார்; அதனால் நாம் கர்த்தரிடம் பயமின்றி அண்டிக்தகாள்ேலாம். இந்த ளதவன் மரைபரியந்தம் நம்ணம தசம்ணமயான பாணதயில் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் நடத்த வல்லவர். கிறிஸ்துணவ அனுதினமும் தகாண்டாட பைகிக் தகாண்டால் ’மகிழ்ளவாம் மகிழ்ளவாம் தினம் அக மகிழ்ளவாம்’ என்று நாளும் பாடி மகிைலாம். கவணலகள் உன்ணனவிட்டு ஓட ளவண்டுமானால், நீ கர்த்தணர ளநாக்கி ஓட முதலில் கற்றுக்தகாள்.

ண்டித ைமோ ோய் (1858 – 1922) - திருமதி ளராசலின் பிரபு

ஆைம் கோலம்

அனந்த சாஸ்திரியினுணடய கணடசி மகோன பண்டித ரமா பாய் ஒரு சமுதாய சீர்திருத்தவாதி. அவர்தம் சிறு வயதில் சமஸ்கிருத தமாைிணய நன்கு

கற்றறிந்தார். அவர் ொதி முணறணய எதிர்த்துப் ளபாராடி, ஒரு வைக்கறிஞணரத் திருமைம் தசய்துதகாண்டார். ஆனால், தனது 23ஆவது வயதில் விதணவயானார். அப்தபாழுது அவருக்கு ஒரு தபண் குைந்ணத இருந்தது.

அந்த சமயத்தில் இந்தியாவில் சுமார் 22 லட்சம் இேம் விதணவகேிருந்தனர். ரமா பாய் தன் சுய சுதந்திரத்ணதயும் கல்விணயயும் குறித்துச் சிந்தித்தார். அத்துடன் இந்தியாவிலுள்ே தபண்களுக்கு உதவி

தசய்யும்படி வாஞ்ணசயாய் இருந்தார். அதனால் வங்காேத்தில் இருந்து பூனாவிற்கு குடிதபயர்ந்தார். அங்கு கல்வி கற்று தபண்கேின் உரிணமகளுக்காக குரல் தகாடுக்கும் முன்னனி வைக்கறிஞரானார். அளதாடு இங்கிலாந்து தசன்று மருத்துவம் பயின்று வந்து ளசணவ தசய்ய எண்ைினார்.

கிறிஸ்துவவ கண்டுஜகோள்ளுதல்

1883 ஆம் ஆண்டு மருத்துவப் படிப்பிற்காக தன் மகளுடன் இங்கிலாந்து தசன்றார். அங்கிருந்த பரி.கன்னிமரியாேின் ஆங்கிளலய சமுதாயத்தினர் அவணர ஆதரித்தனர். அவர்கள் அவரது ஆங்கில அறிணவ முன்ளனற்றிக் தகாள்ேவும் , அதற்குப் பதிலாக தங்களுக்கு சமஸ்கிருத தமாைிணயக் கற்றுக்தகாடுக்கவும் அனுமதியேித்தனர். அவர்கள் புதிய ஏற்பாட்ணட வாசிக்க அவணர உற்சாகப்படுத்திய ளபாது, ஒடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களுக்கு இளயசு தசய்த ஊைியங்கணேக் குறித்த சம்பவங்கணேக் தகாண்ட சுவிளசஷங்கோல் ததாடப்பட்டார். கிறிஸ்து மட்டுளம இந்தியாவில் நசுக்கப்பட்ட நிணலயில் உள்ே தபண்கணே உயர்த்த முடியும் என்று உைர்ந்தார். ரமாபாய் ’ளமரி ரமா’ என்ற தபயருடன் ஞானஸ்நானம் தபற்றார்.

ம் ோய் முக்தி மிஷன்

1889 ஆம் ஆண்டில் பூனாவிலிருந்து 40 ணமல் ததாணலவில் “பண்டித ரமா பாய் முக்தி மிஷன்” என்ற ஸ்தாபனத்ணத உருவாக்கினார். அது ததாடங்கிய நாள் முதல் நூற்றுக்கைக்கான இேம் தபண்கள் உண்ணமயாய் இரட்சிக்கப்பட்டனர். 1896 இல் ஏற்பட்ட பயங்கரமான பஞ்சத்தின் ளபாது மாட்டு வண்டியில் அளநக


கிராமங்களுக்குச் தசன்று அனாணதப் பிள்ணேகணேயும் இேம் விதணவகணேயும் மிஷனுக்கு தகாண்டு வந்து பாதுகாத்தார். முக்தி மிஷனில் தினமும் அளநக மக்கள் தெபத்திற்காக வந்தனர். 1901 ஆம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் மாதத்தில் சுமார் 1200 ளபர் ஞானஸ்நானம் தபற்றனர். முக்தி மிஷன் மூலம் அளநக இந்திய கிறிஸ்தவர்கள், புறமதத்தினர், ஆதரவற்ளறார் மற்றும் அளநகர் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்டனர். அங்கு ஒவ்தவாரு நாளும் மூன்று கூட்டங்கள் நணடதபற்றன. ரமா பாய் தனது தெபக்குழுவினருக்கு ஒரு குறிக்ளகாணே அேித்தார்: “நாம் குணறவாக ளசணவ தசய்து, அதிமாய் தெபத்தால், நமது ஊைியம் நிணலத்திருந்து பலணனத் தரும்”

அணதத் ததாடர்ந்து ஆசிரியர்களுக்கான பயிற்சிப்பள்ேி ஒன்று திறக்கப்பட்டது. ளதாட்டங்கள், வயல்கள், எண்தைய் பிைியுமிடம், பால்பண்ணை, சலணவ தசய்யுமிடம், அடுப்பு உணலகள் ஆகியணவகளோடு கூடிய ததாைில் பயிற்சிப் பள்ேி ஒன்றும் திறக்கப்பட்டது. அத்துடன, அங்கு ணதயற்கணல, தநசவு கணல, துைியில் பூ ணதக்கும் கணல ஆகியணவகளும் கற்றுக் தகாடுக்கபட்டன.

MISSIONARY PROFILE by Mrs. Anne F Sangeeth Brother Bakht Singh – A Preacher to Andhra Bakht Singh Chabra, also known as Brother Bakht Singh was a Christian evangelist in India and other parts of South Asia. Bakht Singh was born to religious Sikh parents in 1903 in the Punjab region which is

now part of Pakistan. He studied in a Christian mis-sionary school but hated Christians. When he was seven years old, Bakht Singh’s father, a successful contractor, took him to work and introduced him to the supervising English engineer, who jokingly said that Bakht Singh could go to England with him. Since then Bakht Singh wanted to go to England. Later, he studied in England and got involved in all

the activities such as games, drinking, smoking and dancing. Bakht Singh never encountered a committed Christian who spoke to him directly about Christ. He played tennis at his club every Sunday morning. Later in the day, he would hear Mrs. Kemp, his land-

lady, playing hymns on the piano. He had no idea what hymns were since he had never gone to a church service. She was a kind woman and Bakht Singh later said,” I believe that even though she never spoke to me about salvation, she must have been praying for me.” When he was still in England, he saw a poster about Canada and want-ed to go to Canada. Since some of his college students were going, he also went with them. On a Sunday, since he wanted to show that he could do what his companions were doing, he went to the church with them and sat in the last row. After some time, he tried to walk out but was hemmed in on both sides by kneeling people. So he knelt down

out of courtesy and the next thing he knew, he felt some divine power engulf him and this experience left him with a strong desire to know more about Christ. Bakht Singh went to Canada for a second time to finish his engi-neering and met a bank manager named Owel Hansen, who was very happy all the time. So Bakht Singh went and asked him the reason for his joy. Mr. Hansen replied that it was “because of Jesus”. Bakht Singh asked Mr. Hansen for a New Testament. Though Mr. Hansen was sur-prised, he gave him. That very same night, Bakht Singh started reading the gospels and read till 3.00 am. He continued reading the Bible for 3


days and when he was reading John 3:3, on December 16, 1929, he was convicted. A few days later, for Christmas, Mr. Hansen gave him the whole Bible. He started with Genesis and read for fourteen hours

at a stretch. He finished reading the entire Bible in two months and read the New Testament several times. When he was reading Gene-sis, he found the words “God said” repeated many times. Bakht Singh wanted to hear God’s voice too and asked God to speak to him. He believed that he could, and a day came when he began to hear His voice everyday. When Bakht Singh returned to India, his parents did not want to accept him as he was a Christian now. So he gave up all the wealth and pleasures for his God and started preaching the gospel in the streets of Mumbai. He soon attracted many crowds. His heart was flooded with the love of Christ for all people, and the Lord opened doors for him to go to many places as His witness. He used to get up early and preach to the sweepers at 4.00 am. Though his parents left

him because of his faith, God led them to accept him as their son. And not just that, they even got to know the Lord through their son. He started a small church and later many more local churches were start-ed. Bakht Singh used to spend many hours praying and meditating

on the Word. People who have seen him still testify that he used to list out all the names when he prayed. When asked by one of his friends as to how he could remember so many names, he replied that he could remember because he prayed everyday for them. Crowds gathered in the open air, as many as 12,000 on one occasion, to hear this man of God. In Hyderabad was one of the largest gatherings, up to 25,000 participants. Expenses were given by voluntary offerings and no appeals were made. On September 17, 2000, at 6:05 am, Singh died in his sleep. At the very same time, the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad expe-

rienced a mild earthquake coupled by unusual thundering and lighten-ing. The funeral was attended by nearly 250,000 people on September 22, 2000. Just before the casket was being carried out, at 11:30am

while the sun was still shining bright, a rainbow circled the sun for a short time. As the rainbow disappeared, a shining ring like a crown appeared around the sun. Brother Bakht Singh depended solely on God for his every need, both personal and corporate. Even in the sim-plest matters, he did everything by first seeking the Lord’s will.

THE MIDNIGHT CHURCH

- Excerpts from the book I was just wondering by Philip Yancey I attended a unique “church” recently, one than manages, with no de-

nominational headquarters or paid staff, to attract millions of devoted members

each week. It goes by the name Alcoholics Anonymous. I went at the invitation of

a friend who had just confessed to me his problem with drinking. “Come along,”

he said, “and I think you’ll catch a glimpse of what the early church must have

been like.” Late one evening, we entered a ramshackle house where the air was

filled with acrid clouds of cigarette smoke. It didn’t take long to sense what my

friend had meant with his allusion to the early church. A well -known politician and

several prominent millionaires were mixing freely with unemployed dropouts and

kids who wore Band-Aids to hide the needle marks on their arms. The “sharing

time” was marked by compassionate listening, warm responses and many hugs.

Introductions were like this: “Hi, I’m Tom, and I’m an alcoholic and a drug addict.”

Instantly everyone else shouted back, “Hi, Tom!” Each person attending gave a

personal progress report on the battle with addiction.

AA owns no property, has no headquarters, and no staff or investment

counsellors who jet across the country. The original founders of AA built in safe-

guards that would kill off anything that might lead to a bureaucracy. They be-

lieved their program could work only if it stayed at the most basic level: one alco-

holic giving his or her life to help another. Yet AA has proven so effective that 250

other organizations including cancer patient groups, etc have sprung up in con-

scious mimicry of its technique. The many parallels to the early church are no

mere historical accident. The Christian founders of AA insisted that dependence

on God be a mandatory part of the program. The night I attended, everyone in

the room repeated aloud the twelve principles, which acknowledge total depend-

ence on God for forgiveness and strength.

“I’m trying to survive,” my friend admitted, “and AA helps me in that

struggle far better than any local church.” The church seems irrelevant and gut-

less to him. A local church would be the last place a person could stand up and

declare, “Hi, I’m Tom, and I’m an alcoholic and a drug addict.” No one would

shout back, “Hi, Tom!” My friend has not lost faith and hopes to be back in a local

church someday. In fact, he says, AA has helped him resolve one of Christianity’s

most difficult paradoxes. Take the free will debate: how can a person accept full

responsibility for his or her actions even when they know that family background,

hormonal imbalances, and supernatural forces of evil all contribute to that behav-

iour? In AA, every alcoholic has to acknowledge full and complete responsibility

for all behaviour, even what happens in a drunken stupor. Rationalizations are

forbidden.

I came away from the “midnight church” impressed but also wondering

why AA meets needs in a way that the local church does not – or at least did not

for my friend. I asked him to name the one quality missing in the local church that

AA had somehow provided. I expected to hear a word like love or acceptance,

instead he took a long time to think and softly said one word: dependency.

“None of us can make it on our own – isn’t that why Jesus came?’ he explained.

“Yet most church people give off a self-satisfied air of piety or superiority. I don’t

sense them consciously leaning on God or each other. Their lives appear to be in

order. An alcoholic who goes to church feels inferior and incomplete.” He sat in

silence for a while, until a smile began to crease his face. “It’s a funny thing,” he

said at last. “What I hate most about myself, my alcoholism, was the one thing

God used to bring me back to him. Because of it, I know I can’t survive without

him. Maybe that the redeeming value of alcoholics, maybe God is calling us alco-

holics to teach the saints what it means to be dependent on him and on his com-

munity on earth.”


Testimony - Mrs Shiela Dinakar

God's Amazing Protection After months of planning and yearning, our Goa trip finally material-ized and I was on cloud nine! Our parents accompanied us on our trip and off

we went. Our upward journey was like Noah's flood without the ark due to the

effects of cyclone Nilam. It was a wonderful beach vacation with salt, sea,

sand, sky, sun, surf and watching the waves wash wildly and playing endlessly

in the water. Though we had planned to return later on Sunday, we left earlier

than planned as we decided not to miss church on Sunday morning. We did

not realize then what God had planned for us on our return. The entire family

was as tired as we possibly could be after our car trip of more than 10+ hours

(we were a bit saved by the smooth NH4!!!)

Upon arrival on Saturday midnight, as usual I was doing the honours of opening the door. The entire house was covered with a BLANKET OF DARKNESS. We used the car headlights to break through the darkness. I lift-ed up the key to open the lock on the grill. A flash of fear stabbed through me, the LOCK WAS MISSING!!! The grill was twisted. I stood there shocked and dumbfounded and made a feeble cry to the rest of the family “there has been a burglary.” My dad ran to me stating our house could not be burgled and I realized this feeling that we shared mutually as a family could have led to the carelessness that might have provided vital clues to the thief to nail our house for the task. We were at fault of not having informed the neighbours or making arrangements for the newspapers or for the lights to be switched on, etc. We were careless as if nothing could happen to us. My heart was prancing at the thought of what we might have lost. I rushed inside the house to see for myself

what had gone missing despite my husband’s warnings.

There, in the dark, I saw an object moving towards me. What was that??? And then, suddenly he was there, charging down the hallway. It was the thief himself who was holed up in the house and was busy scripting his exit. I was dumbfounded, not a whisper, a word, or cry went out from me or my daughter who was standing nearby. He passed by me and ran directly into the second line of defence i.e., my husband and my dad. My husband man-aged to overpower him by God's grace and we were all astonished as the thief stood there extremely submissive with no resistance. He was as meek as a lamb when they bound him with ropes. So unlikely of a thief!! It was God's

grace all through!

We immediately called up the police and were slightly surprised at their on-time arrival! They helped recover the stolen jewellery from his per-son. The thief had actually turned the entire house upside down. His modus operandi amazed us from the way he had broken the doors, grills, and locks, all with minimum effort & maximum efficiency. He had also used the wonderful process of searching and neatly packing his booty into our own backpacks! Room by room, shelf by shelf, item by item, he had left nothing to chance. Wondering if he used the depth-first or breadth-first search algorithm out there? My awe turned into torment a moment later when I realized the amount

of effort I needed to put into getting the items back into their right places.


It was completely God's grace that we returned just in time to our doorstep, unfortunately for our new friend. We later came to learn that the thief was well armed, but God protected us by making him think of escaping and not harming us. Something that could have gone wrong in so many differ-ent ways, turned out so easy and so rightly timed! It was God’s amazing pro-

tection all the way!!

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we

may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Youth Sunday - Report – Mr. Franklin Koilpillai

Youth Sunday :

The youth Sunday for the year 2014 was celebrated on 19th October. By God's grace in the year 2014 we were able to add one more youth fellow-ship post English service to address the larger needs of the youth in BMC,

who are coming from various background.

The theme selected by youth for 2014 Youth Sunday was "Born again for real". Youth performed a skit and led worship to convey the message, what is considered as right in God's eyes. The Tamil service was conducted by Miss Persi and English service by Miss. Merlin. It was treat to watch special songs in Tamil, Meghalayan, French, Nigerian etc with the cultural flavor. It clearly showed our God is a

God of variety. Praise be to Him.

Youth Fun Day

Youth Fun day was organized during Diwali holidays (25th Oct) in our Church for youth to get to know about each other and to increase the bonding. Youth enjoyed the blind Volleyball games, afternoon lunch and Christian mov-ie in the evening. After the movie Pastor conducted games and we closed the

program with prayer.


Parents’ Section - Spanking - An essential part of discipline Can you provide some ground-rules for the use of spanking as a form of disciplin-ing?

Mild spankings can begin around 18 months of age, relatively infrequent and must be reserved for clear defiance of parental authority and not for childish irresponsibil-ity. Spanking as a form of teaching discipline should generally be reserved for young-er children and should taper as the child grows older, say six years and older and almost never beyond the age of 10. However, some strong-willed children absolute-

ly demand to be spanked and then it may be necessary to do so. For most children, however, spanking should be a thing of the past as they reach the pre-adolescence years. Should a spanking hurt? Yes, or else it will have no influence. A small amount of pain (2 or 3 strokes on the legs) is usually sufficient to emphasize the point, “you must obey me.” It is important to spank immediately after the offense, not much

later when the child cannot associate the punishment with the offense, only excep-tion being when the spanking cannot be administered publicly. Little children want to be held and reassured by the parent after the episode is over and the tears have subsided. By all means, let him come. Embrace him in your arms and tell him how much you love him and why he must obey. It would be very good to pray with the

child at that time, admitting to God that we have all sinned and no one is perfect. Divine forgiveness is a marvellous experience for everyone, even children.

Why does spanking seem to fail sometimes? Does this vary with children?

Children are so tremendously variable that it is sometimes hard to believe that they are all members of the same human family. Some children can be crushed with nothing more than a stern look; others seem to require strong and even painful disci-plinary measures. The parental task is to get behind the eyes of the child, thereby

tailoring the discipline as required. When spanking fails to yield any result, some of these basic reasons could be involved:

The most recurring problem results from infrequent, whimsical punishment. Half the time the child is not punished for a particular act of defiance and the other half he is held accountable for it. Children need to know the certainty of justice.

The child may be more strong-willed than the parent and they both know it. If he can outlast the parent, he has won a major battle, eliminating punishment as a tool. He wins the battle by defying the parent again, and again. The solution to this situation is to simply outlast the strong-willed child. The experience can be painful but the benefits will be seen tomorrow.

The parent may suddenly employ this method after doing nothing for a long while and it may take a while for the child to adjust to this form of punishment, during which time the parent may get discouraged.

The spanking may be too gentle. If it doesn’t hurt and the child does not “feel” the message, it may be ineffective. The motive of the spanking, however, should always be love and it should never be administered in a fit of anger.

Exceptions: There are some children for whom spankings do not work, especially

hyperactive children who get agitated by any response which excites their nervous system. In these and related cases, other forms of discipline must be applied.
