Cheering for Sisterhood Written by: Libby Booton
When I first joined the Mines Cheerleading team, I was told
there were too many conflicts between Greek Life and Cheer events, so none of the new members on Cheer should attend recruitment. However, the next year, a Sigma Kappa and Mines alumna, Kinzie Beavers, became one of the Mines Cheerleading coaches. Kinzie made all of the team members feel comfortable participating in both Greek Life and Cheerleading. I finally joined Sigma Kappa in the fall of my junior year and I immediately felt the sisterhood with Kinzie as she was bringing her old pens and t-shirts to practice to welcome me to Sigma Kappa. The current team consists of 16 members. Half of the team is involved in Greek Life, three of which are active members of Sigma Kappa!
As a new member of Sigma Kappa
four short years ago, I wasn't quite
sure just exactly what I had gotten
myself into. All I knew was that in
order to survive college life at
Mines, I would need a support
group and sorority life seemed to fit
the bill. I never imagined it would
be that and so much more.
I kept hearing a certain phrase
throughout my first year of
membership, "not four years, but for
life." At first I scoffed at the
repetitive use of such a pun, but then
I realized I was witnessing this
lifetime membership firsthand.
My grandmother attended the
University of Rhode Island
beginning in the fall of 1940 where
she, and many other fine women,
decided to join a small sorority on
campus, Sigma Kappa. She lived in
her Sigma Kappa house for all of
her collegiate life and loves to
reminisce of sunbathing on the roof
and playing basketball in the yard
with her sisters. Following college,
my grandmother served in the army,
found the love of her life, started a
family, and became the best
grandmother a girl could ask for, all
while remaining a loyal alumnae
member of Sigma Kappa.
This year, she, along with every
member of Sigma Kappa, celebrates
her 75th year of membership. She
truly exemplifies what it means to
be a sister in Sigma Kappa, and she
proves to me everyday that even a
silly pun can hold deep meaning and
faith in my life.
My grandmother has taught me
many valuable lessons throughout
my life but the greatest of these is
love. Love for your family, your
friends, and (one special to just the
two of us) love for your Sigma
Kappa sisters. I can't wait to begin
my lifetime of sisterhood and share
my memories (and puns) with future
Sigma K's.

Senior Spotlight
After graduation, I will be working in downtown Denver as an android software engineering for POSSIBLE Mobile.
I plan to continue going on adventures in the mountains and staying close to Sigma Kappa sisters. Since I will be living in Golden, I hope to be able to attend Zeta Pi events as often as I can.
As of right now, I plan on traveling around as much as possible while I am young and have some time.
LISK,
Krista Horn
