New Campus Tree Signs
The University of Arizona CampusArboretum promotes Stewardship andconservation of almost 8000 campustrees. We want everyone to know abouttrees! To this end, since the recognitionof the Arboretum in 2002, more than 800botanical signs have been installed topromote understanding of the speciesrepresented. These signs adorn theentire main campus, mark theposition of, and tell the name andorigin of a representative campus
specimen for each of our almost 550 species. Welove these signs, but feel the time has come to offermore opportunity for broader learning. With fundingfrom the UA Green Fund and several generous donors,we have begun the process of refurbishing sign posts andredesigning new signs that will not only detail the nameand origin of the species, but will also include a QR code. These QR codes will allow users with mobile devices toscan the sign and access more information about eachspecies. This information includes helpful tips like treebenefits, cultivation notes, water requirements, andpractical uses for each plant. In addition, this project willallow us to expand interpretation of significant gardenfeatures and to spread the word about the existence ofthe Campus Arboretum. As one of The 50 Most Stunning University Arboreta in theWorld,we hope to let everyone know The CampusArboretum is all around them as they visit the maincampus. This project requires intensive effort andcoordination of all eleven interns. Everyone has a roleand each student is accountable to the group. To learn more about our progress, see the projectdescription on the website and LIKE US onFacebook.

If you have noticed that old main is finally finished withall of their renovations, you also may have noticed theabsence of one of the University of Arizona CampusArboretum's Heritage Trees the Crested Saguaro(Carnegiea gigantea). The specimen at Old Main waslisted as a heritage tree and was a feature of numerousCampus Arboretum tours and plant walks. Due toextensive infection, the specimen toppled over after avery minor wind storm last summer. The specimen hasbeen removed with hopes that another crested specimen
can be identified in the coming years. If you would like tosupport this effort, please contact Tanya Quist, CampusArboretum Director.
