8th Annual Fiddlinrsquoand Pickinrsquo Contest

UOTF Spring Social

On March 10th the Salt Lake chapter once againhosted the state wide Spring Social We werepleased to have representation from most of thechapters at this event Along with our usual musicalfare the audience was serenaded by an alp hornplaying Edelweiss Some of the photos in this editionare from this event The other photos in this editionare from the Pahvant chapter fund raiser for firemenwith cancer

The Salt Lake Chapter is again sponsoring theFiddle and Pickinrsquo contest This year it will be held onMay 12 at the West Valley City Hall This year weare also including a harmonica contest both youthand adult divisions

Friday May 11 also at West Valley City Hallfrom 500-about 900 pm we will have a Jamsession

Registration for the fiddle contest will begin at800 am Saturday May 12 with the contest startingat 900 am

Please come and compete or come to listen to thegreat talent within the UOTF organization This is alsoa good time to perform before the State Contest inAugust

The Utah County Chapter has been having a slowperiod we have only had 4 gigs in March and 3 inApril but have scheduled a few new gigs The StateHospital has invited us to play on the 18th of AprilWe have applied for the RSVP funding (Rich CountySenior Volunteer Program) and it look like we aregoing to get it from the Mountainland Association sothat will be good for the group I would like to thankAlan Brownlee for all the help he has given me ondoing this

We have added some new members this month ndashincluding a fiddler player (and we need all the fiddlerwe can get) and also a new bass player that I meet inYuma AZ this last winter His name is Dr LarryChristensen and he is going to be a lot of fun for usChristensen used to play with banjo Jack Jeppson inthe olden days I was so lucky to find this guy

The chapter has some big gigs coming up for thesummer we are doing the parade for all the citiesaround Utah county the Heber creeper train and alot of more gigs with a lot of new players this yearUtah county is the best in town

Our Pahvant Chapter members of UOTF havekept very busy the past few months We continue toenjoy our monthly opportunities to serve the seniorcitizens in our locale We recently updated our webpage with a short video spotlighting the talents ofmany of our members We continue to learn newmaterial and itrsquos wonderful to have three audienceseach month to try it out on

At the end of March we were invited to performfor the community of Eureka in Juab County We puton an hour show as part of a benefit to help raisefunds for two local firemen who have been diagnosedwith cancer The volunteers raised almost $6000 tohelp with their medical costs

We are looking forward to the summer monthswhich provide additional opportunities to share ourtalents in our various communities We have acommitted group of musicians who think nothing ofdriving 80+ miles one way to be at a performancewhenever they are needed

State Fiddle ContestIn RememberanceClint Shipman

Clint Dell Shipman died atthe age of 80 on March 12012 He was born June 141931 to Clinton T and EdnaUnthank He first marriedMarlene Mae Hansen andlater divorced He then marriedthe love of his life Sally EdithBrock

Clint was 4 years old whenhis grandmother bought him a

harmonica At the age of 9 he took piano lessons andplayed at recitals His mother bought him a pearlgreen steel guitar with lessons on 78 rpm records andsheet music In 8th 9th and 10th grades he played thetrombone

Clint joined the Navy in 1948 and was assignedto the Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer as a flight deckmechanic He was stationed in Seattle and went toJapan After leaving the Navy in 1950 he lived in LasVegas Nevada He worked as an electrician for theTropicana Hotel setting up stage lights and soundsystems for Pearl Bailey and Sammy Davis Jr andother performers

In Las Vegas he met Sally and together theyraised 5 children In 1993 they moved to PocatelloIdaho where he joined the Idaho Old Time FiddlersHis hands were too stiff for guitar and fiddle so hepicked up the Dobro He lived in Tennessee and thenWashington Utah Clint enjoyed every minute playingin various bands until he passed

Clint is survived by his 5 children 33grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren

The Utah State Fiddle Contest will be held onAugust 3-4 this year As in years past the contestwill be held at the Sevier Valley Center in RichfieldUtah Contact June Crosby for information at 801-936-5527

This contest is an all day event beginning Fridayevening and continuing on through Saturday Personstraveling should expect to make arrangements forlodging

Updated rules and registration information will beon the UOTF web page as soon as they are availablePlease check regularly for updates

The Quality Inn in Richfield is providing theorganization with special rates for accommodationsduring the contest The rate is $59 a day for a roomwith a queen or king size bed Just state that you areattending the fiddle contest

Doing Time With Jesus

Playing music has always been a desire for meThe Old Time Fiddlers organization has provided thatopportunity for me and many others to enjoy thatactivity at whatever level of skill we have achievedHaving had association with musicians in Old TimeFiddlers has prepared me for playing and singinggospel music in church Keeping the two in balance isimportant The Pahvant chapter of UOTF ismoderately active and has consistently playedmonthly at local senior apartments and care facilitiessince about 1988 with occasional other gigs andcommunity events Playing gospel music in church isin many ways more rewarding Especially since it is away to express our love and honor to our Lord

My wife pastor Kathy Mincer began preachingin our church in Delta in 1991 under the guidance oftwo pastors who ordained her in 1996 and was laterordained by Faith Christian Fellowship International inthe year 2000 Since our congregation is small andvoid of musicians Kathy and I have had the role andpleasure of leading the praise and worship Kathyplays the piano and I play the guitar and fiddle

In 1998 Kathy expanded her ministry to includethe womenrsquos jails in Nephi and Fillmore Two of theinmates there told her that they each had a husband inthe menrsquos Utah state prison Central UtahCorrectional Facility (CUCF) at Gunnison and askedher to go and minister to them When she requestedto see them the captain over religious and educationalactivities asked her if she would become the non-denominational pastor She agreed and has heldchurch services and bible studies there since then Fora period of time we had services or studies three daysa week but are now back to two days Othervolunteers will ask us where we live and when we say

Delta they gasp- thatrsquos nearly 100 miles away Somereply ldquoyou will surely be rewarded in heavenrdquo I thinkto myself lsquooh does God pay by the milersquo Ourreward is surely here and now He is the one thatmakes it all possible

After 13 years Kathy has become well knownand respected by many of the inmates even manythat never attend her services They greet her in thehalls and yell out to her from across the yard whenthey see her Kathy is known affectionately as ldquothatcrazy womanrdquo and I am known as ldquoel hombre viejocon guitar (the old man with the guitar)rdquo My title isobvious Kathyrsquos title is gained for two reasons Firstshe is a full gospel preacher and there is no chance tosleep in her services Second she does not tolerateirreverence Some come to talk to other inmates thatare strictly separated (except in church) for variousreasons If they insist in talking after Delores and Iwarn them they are evicted Delores who assists ushas the title ldquoJesus Nazirdquo They complain that otherchurch services let them talk and we encourage themto go there Kathy has also gained the respect of theofficers in CUCF not only because of her ability todeal with the men but from the first day sherecognized we were under the authority of theofficers Do not make the mistake of calling themguards they are officers and are there to protect usvolunteers as well as inmates from possible harm

The men enjoy the gospel music and we can hearthem coming down the hall to the chapel singing somepraises to God or quoting some of Kathyrsquosconfessions such as ldquoget ready get ready your goingto be blessedrdquo or ldquoGod is good - all the timerdquo Someof the men have kept in contact with pastor Kathyafter they are fully released and it is so good to hear

when they have gotten jobs reconnected with familyand continued serving God It is not uncommon for aman to come running across a mall calling out toKathy One man called us on the phone fromPennsylvania last Thanksgiving and wanted us to singa couple of verses of one of his favorite gospel songsHe showed up in church in Delta during ChristmasHe brought with him another ex-felon who happenedto be one of the very first Kathy met at CUCF

Playing music in the senior homes is not so muchdifferent than the prison While they are not prisonersthey are in a greater or less degree shut-ins Only thelove of Jesus can bring hope to someone who hasbeen sentenced to life

What I Give and What I Get

When I sat down to write this note I realized thatmy UTOF membership is quite different fromeveryday life In everyday life one rarely gets back asmuch as one gives but in the UTOF it is quite theopposite Here I receive much more than I give Ihave made many new friends not only in my ownchapter but also from across the state and the bestthing about these new friends is that they all lovemusic as much as I do I also have an opportunity toplay music more often and with people from allranges of skill

It is so gratifying to watch a new playerrsquos skillimprove over the months I learned about newinstruments and actually started learning to play newinstruments I started practicing more learning newsongs and exploring new types of music When Ineeded a new violin an experienced UTOF memberfrom a different chapter spent the day with meshopping and I ended up with an excellent instrumentWhen I offered to pay for her time she refused toaccept any payment This is what being a Utah OldTime Fiddler is all about friendship fellowship andgreat music

In return for all the wonderful things I receive Itry to give back by attending as many gigs jams andUTOF events as I can By giving my time to UTOFand spreading the music I hope to encourage othersto get those instruments out of the closet tune up andjoin in Another of my goals is to keep the older musicstyles alive by introducing younger generations tothese older music styles and genres

It is good to reflect on UTOF with regard toWhat We Give and What We Get because rarely inlife do we get more than we give
