Sanctuary’s stinky situation

SONJA NELL>>[email protected]

FROM PAGE 1Another resident voiced her con-

cerns in an e-mail to the Toti Conserv-ancy. “The ongoing sewage stink isnow so bad that one almost doesn’twanttobreathewhilevisitingthepark.Thewater is pitch-black and thick andat the moment the water is drying upandthebirdlife is almostnon-existent,baraSpoonbillandafewducks.Some-thing has to be done as now the stenchis keeping people away.”

Acting on the community’s outcryCllr André Beetge visited the birdsanctuaryand sayswhathe foundwas“absolutely appalling”.

“The pond, canal as well as riverleadingoff theparkandeventually intothe Amanzimtoti River are totally pol-luted to the point of bubbling brown

andblacksilt.FromwhatIamtold, thissewage flow allegedly originates up-stream from the KwaMakhutha areaand increases during the night.

“Pelican and other species have al-ready died as a result, with a fewbirdsplodding around in what is now asewage pond.

“It is very clear why residents andschools are avoiding the area— it haschanged from being a serene wildlifehabitat to nothing but a stinkingsewage dam.

“The worst being that this didn’thappen overnight— it has apparentlybeen going on for some time, yet thereappears to be no urgency to seek aresolve,” Beetge says.

In response to the questions posedby the community and the Toti Con-servancy who investigated thematter, the municipality’s natural resourcesmanager at the bird park, Khumbu

Luthuli, said the oil on the water mostlikely came fromthesomewhere in theSouthgate Industrial Park, saying thatherdepartmentwouldrunwater tests.

Shesaidthatsheandhercolleagueshad decided to dig out the pond be-cause it was completely filtered up.Shealsoadmittedthatshehadnotseenany fish in the pond for some time.

The Toti Conservancy’s chairper-son, Laura Taylor also visited the parkseveral times.

“There is a thin film of fatty oil thatlooks like it has come from a kitchenfat trap, but the main problem isdefinitely not oil. The smell of sewageis overwhelming, the pond is a thicksoupy black colour and it is definitelysewage, and the source needs to betraced,” Taylor says.

The results of the water sampleswere not available at the time of goingto press.

Wardcommunitythreatens

>> ‘We will vote against any party that supports thereplacement of our current councillor’SETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]

THE infighting in Umdoni’s Ward 6, andparticularly Riverside Park (RP), has in-tensified with a number of participants

appearing in court on charges of public vio-lenceandabarelyveiledthreatfromcommuni-ty members that they will switch their alle-giance to rival parties if the ANC does not heartheir plea. The issue is now firmly in the open.

“Donot even thinkof removingour council-lor, Themba Ngobo, from office and give himunqualified support against threats andactivi-ties that are making his job as councilloruntenable and his life unbearable.”

Asawardcouncillorelectedinhispersonal capacity, Ngcobo can onlybe removed in three ways — legalimpeachment, defeat inanelectionorbyhisownresignation.So-calleddeployment is not a constitutionaloption.

There is no doubt thatthere is a vociferousgroup known vari-ously as the hous-ing developmentcommittee (HDC)or Committee of15 which is agi-tating for Ng-cobo’s removaland replace-ment. Corre-spondenceandopinions ex-pressedtotheFever by the

RP communitysuggest that it is a minority faction from theSanathan informal settlementwhom they accuse of racismand violence. Theviews of what claims to be the overwhelmingmajority from the wider Ward 6 communitystands firmly in defence of Ngcobo. And adogged and unequivocal defence it is. A state-ment handed to this reporter at a meeting lastweekstates that“wedonotwantourcouncillorThemba Ngcobo to be replaced by any othercouncillor as we are proud of the excellent jobhehasdoneforus.Therehasneverbeenanoth-ercouncillor inthiswardwhohasgivenservicedelivery in themanner thathehasdone”.A list

of 14 achievements credited to Ngcobo fol-lowed.Thethreat toreject theANCif it re-jects them is also clear.

“We will vote against any party thatsupports thereplacementofourcurrentcouncillor by a person deployed to rep-resent views directly in conflict withavowedANCpoliciesandwhicharedis-

advantageous to the interests ofour Ward 6 community.”

ANDso thegood life continueswith therulingparty retaining thepower to lootthe public purse.

I feel it showswhat canbe achievedwith a little intimidation, spreadingrumours of government grants beingwithheld, promises of entry into theKingdom of Heaven, reported misuseof state resources, a party’s own state-owned TV channel, the promotion oftribalism, condoning corruption, manipulating the law, participating inan escalating crime rate, makingsimilar unrealistic promises as previ-ously and buying votes with blanketsand food parcels.

An uneducated, primitive andpliant populationmust be any govern-ment’s greatest asset. Angie is doing agreat job. Now we will see a new cropof government ministers having theopportunity to fill their personal cof-fers with tender bonuses, etc.

That’s democracy working for thepeople.

A profound quotation came to mynotice recently — “Until the power oflove exceeds the love of power therewill be no peace.” Food for thought.

WE, the community of RiversidePark, whovoted for theANC,havebeen insulted and threatened bythe comrades of the HDCwho callthemselves ANC.

We are happy with our wardcouncillor (Themba Ngcobo) andappreciate what he is doing for usin our community.

We, the community will take astand if our ward councillor is re-placed.

Rescue vs unwanted birthsFROM June we will be able to sterilise14 “underprivileged” dogs from ourrural areas a month. This will befunded by our Tale End Charity Shopin Phala Centre, Amanzimtoti.

The support from the public hasbeen amazing and no amount of say-ing “thank you” will ever be enough, but know that every single dog we dois happy and grateful.

We see the joy every time we steri-lise a dog. They seem to know that

they will never have to worry abouttheir puppies again and that they willnever have to give birth to their pup-pies in a cold, dirty place or in a holein the ground.

To everyone who donated goodiesand to those who bought, thank you.You make everything we do possible, and you guys give all these animals avoice.

A significant number of people are involvedin the process, not least the community andbusinesses it serves and who serve it but alsothe technical service providers who make it aworthwhile enterprise for all.

At Pennington, that service provider isCoastalWaste, ownedbyReggieGovenderandis based south of Shelly Beach.

Generally, each material becomes part of anewsimilarmaterial suchas the textile used inquality jeans coming from recycled pets bot-tles.

By re-using 50% of this volume, an enor-mous amount of dumping space is saved anda largequantityof rawmaterials too.Everyonecan all be proud of participating in this recy-cling process.

Toti Cycling Club newsON Saturday 25 May the mountainbikers went out for hill training onthedirtroadsinIllovo.Highintensityinterval trainingwasdoneandsomepeople were reminded just howmanyhillswehave inKZN.Theroadguys went out and did 80kms.

They left Engen in RockviewRoad, headed south down to Um-gababa, turned and did the Bluffroute and back home. The roadseems to be a bit rough afterUmgababa so alternate road routesare being looked at for distance.

On Sunday a group of mountainbikers met at Rocky Bay for a funride. The track is in amazing condi-tion at the moment. Another grouprode on the Durban promenadewhich now goes right to the UmgeniBird Park with a single track availa-

ble to ride as well. The Compendium MTB Derby

was held at Shongweni on Sunday. The organisers were well organisedand the only thing one could maybemoan about was the dust and theclimbing. This year was 43km,which had a mix of single track, downhill and technical.

Cindy Theunissen’s time was2:13 and she came third in her agecategory. It runs in the blood as bothher children came first in their agecategory for the 25km race. SueMartin came third inherage catego-ry. Ron Waldburger’s Roag numberwas pulled out of the hat to win thebike that was up for grabs.
