FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents, Students and Well-wishers
Within a short span of fifty years Singapore has developed from a sleepy island to
a developed metropolis which emulates and at times surpasses the best in the
world. It is a place which thrives on urbanization and shows no signs of decay
which many metropolises are associated with.
I was therefore pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation to join a select group
of thirteen Principals across India for Worldview Institute of Learning and
Educator’s immersion program titled FutureSake Educator’s Immersion. The
programme revolves around urbanization, its impact and solution.
Singapore’s meteoric rise involved a method. As far as availability of technology
and resource is concerned, there is level playing field, as most developing
countries are concerned. What differentiates Singapore from the rest is the will of
the people to prevail over odds and an immense capacity to adapt to changes. Now
that they are willing to share and educate, we must avail of all opportunities being
offered.
My participation in the program would only be the beginning. All that I learn will
be rapidly transmitted to everyone in school and even those remotely connected
with school. My intent is get all of you involved and be partners in the
development process. Please remember just above fifty percent of the world
population live in urban areas. In India the percentage may be lower but we are
galloping towards that mark. By 2025 the world population is likely to touch 8
billion. To sustain this large population we have to ensure that cities that come up
have adequate infrastructure and amenities. It is time to develop those ideas
which transform the future.
The board examinations have started. I am confident that students of our school
will deliver as usual. The entire school is now in midst of examination.
My best wishes to all students.
Warm regards
John Andrew Bagul

Survey conducted on river Ganga
On 4th February 2017, a group of students from Classes IX and X from South City International School were
taken for a survey on the banks of river Ganga in the Howrah region . In this region, the distributary of River
Ganga is called Bhagirathi-Hughli. The students surveyed on the local people of the area such as the hawkers,
the commuters, people who travel through the ferry Ghats for crossing the river, and the local police. They
conducted the survey based on a questionnaire prepared by them. The students while surveying learnt a lot
about the area, especially about the people and their opinion regarding the pollution that is prevalent in the
river Ganga in this region. The students also learnt about the causes of pollution in the river - The most
common polluting agents in the region being domestic sewage and industrial waste. By survey the students were
able to raise awareness amongst the local people on this critical issue. This survey thus had an overall positive
and enriching impact on all those who were involved.

Friends FM Inter School Quiz
On 18th February 2017, the grand finale of the Friends School Quiz: Science and Technology 3rd
Edition organized by Kolkata’s famous radio-station 91.9 Friends Fm and sponsored by The Neotia
University, took place at City Centre Salt Lake. The quizmaster was Krishnendu Banik. Our school
qualified for the finals after clearing the prelims and the quarterfinals. Prelims were a written
round in which 24 schools were selected out of 40 schools. Quarter finals were an on-air quiz battle
among three schools with only the top school qualifying in the next round. In the quarterfinals, our
school knocked out Kalyani Central Modern School and Carmel High School by a thumping mar-
gin. In this manner, 8 schools were chosen for the grand finale. Our team for the final consisted of
quizzers Subhaditya Basu of Class XI and Aritra Kar of Class IX.
Before the grand finale, the teams had to clear the semifinals- wherein 4 schools competed at a time
and the top two went to the finals. In the first semis, Gokhale Memorial Girls School and Apeejay
School Salt Lake cruised easily. In the second semis, Apeejay School Park Street came first and
South City International School tied with Lakshmipat Singhania Academy. The tiebreaker was a
sudden-death buzzer round in which our team answered successfully first and qualified for the fi-
nale.
In the finals, our team had a tough time battling against the
nearly-invincible team from Gokhale Memorial Girls School.
Before the ultimate buzzer round, our team lagged behind
them by 50 points. Some flash-quick answers temporarily brought our team to the 1st place. However
even the girls managed to recover and at the end again both teams were tied in a deadlock. It was time
for the sudden-death round again but this time our team ran out of luck as Gokhale Memorial Girls
School shot out the answer first to bag the winners title. It was indeed a hard-fought battle and South
City International School emerged Runners-Up. The participants received a trophy, their merit certifi-
cates and Bluetooth speakers. It was undoubtedly a red-lettered day. These entire quiz knockouts will
be broadcasted on Sundays from 9-10 am only on 91.9 Friends FM.
