FROM THE PRINCIPAL‟S DESK

Dear All,

Facing innumerable challenges in their “karmabhoomi”, what should be the role of teachers

in modern times? A teacher today goes beyond being just a facilitator to being a caregiver,

model and an ethical mentor. The concept of teacher, transmitting knowledge within limited space of time and area is un-

dergoing change and perhaps getting redefined. Technological changes may not necessarily

bring in advancements, but it thrusts a change upon the society and teachers cannot isolate

themselves from these metamorphosis. The changes are gradual and imperceptible, initially

and noticeable once complete.

Text books and verbal communication continue to be the mainstay and perhaps the back-

bone of the teaching methods. Graphics and other visual modules available through technol-

ogy has made the task of propagating knowledge easier.

The danger is that there are other avenues to access information. More dangerous is the

credibility of the information. Not all that is available in internet is unbiased truth and rele-

vant. Even truth can be misinterpreted in absence of better understanding. Little learning can

indeed be dangerous.

Modern teachers, therefore need to be aware of these avenues of information and ensure stu-

dents realize the actual values of these information and sources. Consequently the linear

method of teaching needs fresh evaluation and changes.

The social environment can no longer be ignored. It is an essential determinant in psycho-

logical changes in which the experts are giving their inputs. We are looking at a transforma-

tive society where the lines between truth and falsehood are often blurred .Above all, we as

the teaching fraternity need to realise that truth and fact are different and fact may not be the

truth.

Warm regards

John Andrew Bagul
