This Sunday’s Gospel tells us about Jesus healing Peter’s mother-in-law. She is sick with a fever. Jesus rebukes the fever and she is immediately healed and starts waiting on Jesus and the Apostles. Usually this brings up a bunch of mother-in-law jokes. But also some interesting questions. For one thing, where is Mrs. Peter? In many cultures around the world the kitchen is the realm of women. Women have traditionally been the keepers of the hearth which is the heart of the family home. Men were not allowed in the kitchen. Moreover, they would have no clue what to do there. Around the hearth, surrounded by the children, women tell stories. They are the keepers of the family history. Without memory there is no family and they keep the memory alive. In Yiddish there’s a word for it “bubbe-meise” — grandmother tales. I just spent some time with my mother-in-law, Julia, who was recently widowed. We were discussing grandmother stories and she gave an example of the story of her childhood, how her younger sister, who must have been a handful, bit a dog in the tail because it was barking at her. “She was so bad, she bit the dog.” Classic bubbe-meise. So where was Mrs. Peter? It came to me that Mrs. Peter passed away and Peter took his mother-in-law into his household. The Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes, 52 teaches that “The family is a kind of school for deeper humanity…in which the various generations come together and help one another grow wiser and harmonize personal rights with the other requirements of social life, is the foundation of society.” The family is the first and best teacher. We are all in the same boat. In the family we help each other through all the generations. It is our duty to help each other get to heaven. Family ties should be stronger than any other. As in war: “Nobody gets left behind.” Even the mother-in-laws. Especially the mother-in-law. Julia was after all my beloved wife’s mother. I think Peter felt the same way. In the same way that Jesus healed Mrs. Peter’s mother he heals our family. It’s our job to mend the relationships as Peter mended his nets. To keep family relationships in working order, like the nets, so we can be open to the healing touch of Christ and our love be fruitful in our families.
