In today’s first reading God tells Isaiah: Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. As horrifying as that may seem to most of us, being denied by one’s mother, it is a reality for a few. For many years I saw this in children. Their mother’s abandoning their children, ignoring their children, hurting their children, even abusing their children. There were situations which were too horrific to understand but in all cases the children still loved their mothers. They mothered them themselves. I came to the conclusion that the parents were children themselves still needing, still clinging to parents who never gave them the love they need and they were still looking for it. It is a vicious circle of neglect and abuse. Or children used as pawns in the struggle of one parent against the other, usually enabled by blood sucking lawyers (no offense). Yet there are those who are able to rise from the situations and make a life for themselves. How is this possible? The only way I can see out of this quagmire is by the love of God. That has been usually the case with those who have been lifted up and rebuilt their lives. He will never forget you. Lent is almost upon us. This penitential season calls to us to return to the Lord. Confess our sins and be reconciled to him.

Catholic Trivia
How can you tell Lent is here?
Last week’s answer: It is not a “chair or recliner” per se but it refers to the office of Peter as “the first among equals,” or the “Prince of the Apostles”. It refers to the office of the Pope which as Bishop of Rome traces back to the Apostle St Peter.
Twenty-four percent – $1.7 million dollars – of the funds raised by the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is earmarked for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. Through more than 100 programs, Catholic Charities serves those most in need of our assistance. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportunity to do so the weekend, March 11/12, which has been designated as Bishop’s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Help us reach our target of 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated.
