With Elmer Guerri Date: Mondays, February 1 and 8, 2021 Time: 10 AM - 12 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to individuals registered Cost: $6 (Zoom only) Come along and experience the challenges faced by Arctic explorers who took advantage of rapidly developing technological advances during subsequent generations to make significant discoveries. Become familiar with explorers from the Greeks to the Vikings and those with names Bering, Amundsen, Ross, Franklin, Kane, Hayes, Hall, Shackleton, Nordenskiold, Nansen, and, of course, Parry, Peary, and Cook whose battled in the race to the North Pole. Enjoy the adventures of explorers who went nativeincluding Stefansson, Rasmussen, Freuchen, and Koch. The class will be rounded-out by examining the current legal and sovereign challenges as coun- tries compete for rights to oil, gas, and mineral resources of the earths last remaining frontierin a battleground whose rules of engagement are in the process of being negotiated and formalized. Exploration of the Arctic From 350 B.C. to 2021 A.D.

Date: Mondays, February 1 and 8, 2021 Time: 10 AM - 12 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to individuals registered Cost: $6 (Zoom only) Come along and experience the challenges faced by Arctic explorers who took advantage of rapidly developing technological advances during subsequent generations to make significant discoveries. Become familiar with explorers from the Greeks to the Vikings and those with names Bering, Amundsen, Ross, Franklin, Kane, Hayes, Hall, Shackleton, Nordenskiold, Nansen, and, of course, Parry, Peary, and Cook whose battled in the race to the North Pole. Enjoy the adventures of explorers who “went native” including Stefansson, Rasmussen, Freuchen, and Koch. A Tour of the Orchestra – Viola

Date: Tuesday, February 9, 2021 Time: 1 - 2:30 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: $3 (Zoom only) Join Samantha Johnson-Helms, Executive Director and Principal Clarinet, and Esteban Hernandez Parra, Violist for the Terre Haute Symphony as they discuss the viola and its role in the symphony orchestra. Esteban will present a brief history of the viola, demonstrate the instrument’s mechanics and popular orchestral excerpts, and give a performance of a short solo piece. The presentation will close with a short question and answer session.

Planning Your Summer Yard With Tom Cummings of The Apple House and Jim Martin of Bunch Nurseries

Date: Thursdays, February 18 and 25, 2021 Time: 2 - 4 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to Individuals registered Cost: $6 (Zoom only) In an effort to combat the mid-winter doldrums and to inspire early searches through landscaping and lawn and seed catalogs, come join local lawn and garden experts with special knowledge and skills to help you start thinking of warmer times and being outside. Tom Cummings of The Apple House will discuss specific plants for specific sunlight and seasonal applications and how to lay out a flower garden. Participants will become familiar with annuals and perennials and species which will allow seasonal long colors, including the use of wildflower species. Tom will discuss soil preparation, planting of seeds, and the best times to begin planting. Jim Martin of Bunch Nurseries will discuss various yard, and garden, and landscape features, as well as valuable tips for making sure adequate drainage is planned for plants, beds, and ornamental landscape structures. Class participants will be asked if they have any landscape issues that can be discussed in class with Jim giving his excellent advice. OLLI is also working on a special walking tour through the large inventory of trees, shrubs, ornamentals and landscaping materials maintained by Bunch Nurseries in the coming warmer months.

You supply your own drinks and snacks and she will provide a trivia filled hour of fun and friends. Come join other OLLI members for a not so fast paced trivia game that is sure to brighten your February blues.

This presentation will feature a Carnival Theme connection with the OLLI class titled “Don’t Stop the Carnival” . Even better you don’t have to go shopping for the ingredients! Swope Art Museum Virtual Tour: Psychodiagnostik

With Edward Trover, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions Swope Art Museum

Date: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Time: 2 - 3 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: $3 (Zoom only) Join Ed for a look at ten selections from the Swope’s permanent collection to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hermann Rorschach’s book Psychodiagnostik. This book contained the results of his studies on mental patients, and the ten cards that became the foundation of the Rorschach test. While still a medical student, he wondered why different people saw different things in art, and began showing inkblots to children and analyzing their responses. Join us for this virtual tour and ask yourself, What do you see? And why? (You might want to register for the Wednesday February 3

presentation in advance of this tour.)

Vigo County History Center Virtual Tour: Fort Harrison

Date: Monday, February 22, 2021 Time: 2 - 3 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: $3 (Zoom only) Join Kerri Wilhelm, the new director for the Vigo County Historical Society & Museum, for a more in depth look at Fort Harrison. Fort Harrison was a War of 1812 era stockade constructed in October 1811 on high ground overlooking the Wabash River on a portion of what is today the modern city of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Leonardo da Vinci's Hidden Message: Leonardo's Knots

With Caroline Cocciardi, Writer and Filmmaker

Date: Wednesday, February 17, 2021 Time: 1:30 - 3 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: FREE but registration is required (Zoom only) Author Caroline Cocciardi focuses on a facet of Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork that has been overlooked for centuries but visual to the naked eye. Leonardo’s placement and use of inspired knots throughout his artwork as seen in such iconic works as “Mona Lisa” to ‘The Last Supper.” The intertwining knot Leonardo invents tells the story of a hidden message unlocked by Cocciardi and revealed in Mona Lisa’s embroidery pattern. This lecture is based on Caroline’s book, Leonardo’s Knots.

Date: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 Time: 1:30 - 3 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: FREE but registration is required (Zoom only) In preparation of our Swope Art Museum Virtual Tour: Psychodiagnostik on February 16, ISU Professor Liz O’Laughlin will explain what the Rorschach Test is and what it isn’t and how it is administered and interpreted. In addition, we will also look at the history and changes that have occurred to the test over the years. Finally, we will learn what purposes the Rorschach test is typically used for (i.e., personality assessment, to assess for disordered thinking) which will touch on mental health.

The New Vigo County Jail, An Update With John Plasse, Vigo County Sheriff

Date: Wednesday, February 24, 2021 Time: 1:30 - 3 PM Place: Zoom link will be sent to those registered Cost: FREE but registration is required (Zoom only) Join Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse for an update on the new Vigo County Jail and plans for the future. The current Vigo County Sheriff’s Office and jail was built in 1980 and was later expanded to a total of 268 rated beds in 2000. The new jail is slated to open in 2021 and will be able to hold 500 inmates.
