Water Aerobics Date: Mondays & Wednesdays Session 1 May 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, & 26 Session 2 June 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, & 30 Time: 9 - 10 AM Place: ISU, Student Recreation Center (SRC), 601 N. 6th St. Terre Haute, IN Cost: $40 Water aerobics is a moderate to intense aerobic exercise in the water that will give you all the great benefits of a cardio workout with some muscle conditioning and strengthening without the impact on the joints you get from traditional land aerobics. It is a flexible class that allows you to work at your own pace. All exercise is done in shallow water with no swimming required. Participants must wear swimsuits. Participants can use a locker in the SRC, but will need to bring their own locks.

All About Birds With Nick Gabry, President of the Wabash Valley Audubon Society

The first session will be with Nick on how to identify different birds by using sight, sound, and bird songs. He will also discuss the different classifications of birds. The second session will be a NOVA special focused on how intelligent some birds can be, like parrots that can plan for the future, jackdaws that can “read” human faces, and crows that can solve multi-step puzzles with tools like pebbles, sticks, and hooks. Come learn all about birds!

Angel of Death: Orville Lynn Majors With Frank Turchi, Retired Indiana State Trooper & Greg Carter, Retired Deputy Prosecutor

Join Frank Turchi, retired State Trooper, who led the investigation, and Greg Carter, who was the lead prosecutor in the trial, as they discuss the investigation and prosecution of Orville Lynn Majors.

European Resistance to The Nazi Occupation from 1940-45 With Don Layton, Professor Emeritus, Indiana State University

Date: Thursdays, June 3 & 10, 2021 Time: 2 - 4 PM Place: Chestnut Building Room 107 (old College of Nursing at 8th and Chestnut) Cost: $6 (Zoom only) $10 (in person maximum 25) In just three months in 1940, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, and France fell to Nazi Germany. This class will look at how the citizens in these occupied countries across Western Europe formed and led resistance organizations against the occupation, how they interacted with Allied military staffs in London, and what they were able to accomplish together.

John Cleese and other members of the Monty Python Flying Circus television series (1969 - 1974) included several references to Spam in their sketches, and they produced in 2004 a Broadway musical comedy titled Spamalot. This class will include a journey through the Monty Python era into other “Dark Humor” style comedy's like The Holy Grail (1975), Fawlty Towers (mid 1970s), and A Fish Called Wanda (1989), all of which were strongly influenced by John Cleese.

Mystery Series in Vienna: The Liebermann Papers With Michelle Bennett, Program Administrator for OLLI at Indiana State

Date: Mondays, June 7 & 14, 2021 Time: 2 - 4 PM Place: Chestnut Building Room 107 (old College of Nursing at 8th and Chestnut) Cost: $6 (Zoom only) $10 (in person maximum 25) OLLI has a trip scheduled for 2022 that will include a visit to Vienna. Inspired by the trip Michelle will introduce you to a series of books that take place in Vienna. The Liebermann Papers are a series of historical mystery novels by British novelist Frank Tallis set in Vienna around the beginning of the 20th century. The two main characters are Vienna police inspector Oskar Reinhardt and his friend and adviser Max Liebermann, who is a psychiatrist and a student of Sigmund Freud. The series is so popular that PBS has created a TV series based on the books called Vienna Blood. Join Michelle as she compares the first book in the series, Mortal Mischief, to the TV series episodes based on that book.

Alfred Hitchcock and “The Birds” With Elmer Guerri

The cinema industry has not escaped the intrusion of birds, as birds appear prominently in themes and backgrounds of many features. One of the most unforgettable of such aviary appearances is the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds. Elmer will lead participants on an exciting, revealing journey through the life and career of Alfred Hitchcock as told through the biography titled The Dark Side of Genius: The Life of Alfred Hitchcock.

Date: Monday, May 10, 2021 Time: 9 - 10 AM Place: Indiana State University, Hulman Center Cost: $5 (In person maximum 25) Indiana State University Hulman Center opened in 1973 and is a multi-purpose facility for events including sports, graduations, and concerts. As many of you have noticed when passing the building, the Hulman Center has been undergoing renovations. Come be one of the first to tour the newly finished building that has a new exterior facade and a glass entrance at the south end which now boosts more square footage and event/meeting space, as well as, new restrooms, concession stands, and much more.

We will try to unravel the life stories carved in stone. Crown Hill Cemetery was established in 1863 at what was known then as Strawberry Hill. The summit, which overlooks Indianapolis, was renamed The Crown. An Indiana icon, Crown Hill Cemetery is the most prominent cemetery in the area, and is known around the world for its historic treasures.

Richard W. Thompson came to Indiana as a young man and became a permanent resident. Also like Lincoln, he clerked in a store and studied law. He had a prolific public service career and served in multiple positions, becoming well-acquainted with Lincoln as they served in Congress together. Eventually serving as commandant of Camp Dick Thompson in Terre Haute at the beginning of the Civil War, he went on to retire from a lauded public career to live in a house on 6th Street. A remarkable individual who deserves a special place in local history.

Swope Art Museum Virtual Tour: Living with Art: King and Lamis With Ed Trover, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions Swope Art Museum

Date: Friday, June 11, 2021 Time: 11 AM - 12 PM Place: Swope Art Museum, 25 S. 7th St., Terre Haute Cost: $3 (In person only maximum 25 ) Polly King (1901-1993) was a prolific painter who practiced many styles throughout her life—from classicism to impressionism to abstract. She was also a collector and loved to paint interior scenes of her home that included works by other artists. One of her most prized works in her collection was one of Leroy Lamis’ first plexiglass constructions.

Turn to the River - PHASE I: An update on the exciting project now underway for our city/county government plaza

Hear from Executive Director, Mary Kramer, about Phase I of the project which is now underway. The current focus is the plaza between the Terre Haute City Hall and the Vigo County Courthouse where a new work of art and water feature will shortly be installed. Other improvements include seating, trees, landscaping, new pathways and charging posts. Learn about future phases for Turn to the River, and other things in the works for Art Spaces as well. Over the past decade, David has spent thousands of hours exploring our park system. David wrote of his experiences in the first published narrative through all the NPS sites, The Centennial: A Journey through America’s National Park System. Ann DeLong, Foreign Service Officer with the United States Department of State, is looking forward to sharing with you the excitement of working overseas. We welcome you to join our virtual presentation with Ann DeLong. Ann is passionate about public service and has worked for four government agencies over the past 25 years. Her presentation will focus on the role of our embassies overseas and how they protect Americans and advance US interests. Ann has lived in 9 countries and traveled to 90 and raised two young adults overseas, exposing them to the many experiences, adventures, and rewards of living abroad. Ann’s hour-long presentation will end with an opportunity for questions.
