Message from the Manager

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2020. I hope everyone enjoyed a safe,

relaxing and happy Christmas and New Year. It was lovely welcoming back

Harmony Club clients in early January and see the other programs return to

their activities over the month. The building can just seem too quiet without

all of the activity and chatter of people connecting and enjoying themselves.

In February we will be welcoming two new students to the organisation to

complete their placement hours as part of their studies. When you meet

Ashlee and Muhammad, I hope you will make them feel welcome. I would

also like to extend a welcome to all the new volunteers, clients and families

who have joined our community recently.

As usual our newsletter contains information on the coming and goings of the

program and activities. You may have noticed the flyer for St David’s Place is

not included, we have made the decision not to continue with this once a

month activity. The weekly Friday breakfast will also not be continuing,

however, there is always breakfast food available each day of the week for

those in need and the monthly BBQ community breakfast will make a return

on Friday 28th February.

As a neighbourhood centre, many people connect with us when they are in

need of information, assistance, along with food and help to pay the bills and

needing transport assistance. Please see Dawn at reception if you would like

to make a contribution.

Chinese New Year – January 25 2020

Happy New Year!

新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè)

On Jaunary 25, many Australians celebrated Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year. It marks the first day of the New Year in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese New Year celebrations can last for about 15 days and is a busy time filled with festive programs across different communities in Australia.

Chinese New Year celebrations can include the following events and activities:

Street festivals featuring arts, lion dancing, entertainment and children’s activities.

Chinese New Year markets showcasing arts, crafts and food stalls.

Dancing, music and people wearing colourful costumes to welcome the Chinese New Year.

Vibrant displays of Chinese lanterns, firecrackers and fireworks. Many Chinese Australian families spend Chinese New Year by gathering together for a festive meal. Red envelopes containing money (Hong Bao, Ang Pao, or Lai See) are shared, which symbolise happiness, good luck, success and good fortune. These envelopes are mainly given as presents to children. Chinese New Year has various symbols and traditions. For example, flowers are an important part of New Year decorations. Writings that refer to good luck are often seen in homes and business environments. They are usually written by brush on a diamond-shaped piece of red paper. Tangerines and oranges are also displayed in many homes and stores as a sign of luck and wealth. Each Chinese New Year is associated with an animal name for one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. 2020 is the Year of the Rat, in Chinese culture rats are seen as a sign of wealth and surplus.

Welcome back to Stay n Play for 2020!

We provide an inclusive, safe and nurturing environment both indoor and outdoor. Where children can explore, play and learn. Develop social skills at their own pace while negotiating with peers. Learning to resolve conflict, take turns, share and make friends; while building their emotional confidence, physical activity, imagination & creativity. Most importantly, their attachments between adults and other children as they play together sharing time and experiences.

At Stay n Play, we ensure a friendly environment so that families, as soon as they walk through the door, are feeling comfortable and are ready to build relationships & connections. We all get to have fun while supporting each other.

Noela & I have been busy sprinkling pixie dust all throughout our playroom creating new play spaces. We have a lot of new & exciting opportunities planned for this year. We hope you all love the new learning environments, refurbished & repurposed furniture as well as new resources too.

*Term 1 starts Tuesday 28th January to Thursday 9th April. Our hours are 9:30am – 11:30am. We will then be closed for the Easter break. From all of us at Stay n Play ~ Welcome to our tribe! We look forward to our first term together learning & exploring through play!

Our driveway into the centre is quite narrow,

and so is Rookwood Avenue. Please do not

park too close to the driveway or our

Neighbourhood Centre Vehicles can not turn

into our driveway. Our vehicles can be carrying

clients with limited mobility so it is essential that

they are able to enter the driveway and park

near our entrance safely. Parking is available

behind the church on the corner of Keeling

Street and Orange Grove

Road.

Thank you for your kind

consideration.

My, how time flies. As I write this it is already three weeks since Christmas. The tree is in its box and the decorations

have been put away for another year. By now for many people the celebration of Christmas is a distant memory. Now

the New Year has arrived welcomed with parties, fireworks and the making of New Year resolutions. New Year is the

time of new beginnings, as we look forward to the year that lies ahead. What will 2020 hold for each of us as we

journey through life? Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is unknown still to come, so today is all that we. So how can we

plan for tomorrow as we live our lives today at the beginning of this New Year. Some will diligently read the stars in

the local paper. Some will have their palm read by some gypsy in a tent who will also have a crystal ball and others will

consult some psychic and believe every word they say. Finally some will sing the song “whatever will be will be.” I

believe that is a fatalistic view which says “I am not in control of the decision in life that I must make no matter what

the outcomes will be.” I believe that none of these help us to live the life God has given to us as we journey into the

unknown.

Some years ago Suzanne Prentice made popular the song “one day at a time.” I often have the words of this song on

my mind as I journey through life. Part of this song says “ I am only human, I am just a woman, Lord help me to be, all I

can be and all that I am, show me the stairway I have to climb, Lord for my sake teach me to take, one day at a time”.

To me this is the key to living as God would have us live as we journey forth into this New Year. As another song says “I

will never walk alone while I walk with God.” With these songs in our hearts we can walk confidently through the

coming year. At Sunday school we often sang “One more step along the road I go, from the old into the new, keep me

travelling along with you.”

At the beginning of the New Year we often set ourselves goals. They are something to reach for at the end of the

journey. Something we attain to. What is your ultimate goal at the end of life’s journey. The Apostle Paul wrote that he

had not yet attained his goal. He said “So I press on forgetting those things which are behind and reaching for those

things that be ahead.” That was Paul’s ultimate goal. The prize he sought was a life

with Christ at the end of the journey. That is my ultimate goal at life’s end. What is

yours as you embark upon the year and years that lie ahead?

I won’t only say “Happy New Year,” but also “Happy New Day.”

God bless, Cec - Cec Lawson offers Pastoral Care to participants at the Neigh-

bourhood Centre.

WHO NEEDS AN ADVOCATE?

Many people may use an advocate but some of the most common reasons include:

Not feeling confident to speak on their own, having someone help them to have their voice heard

Difficulty in communicating with others especially when expressing their views, thoughts, feelings and experiences

Feeling like they are unable to resolve issues alone and would like someone to walk the journey with them

TYPES OF ADVOCACY

Advocacy can be:

Informal – a family member or friend helps the person to have their voice heard

Formal – support is provided by an advocacy service

As a staff member or volunteer a client or service user may ask you to be an advocate on their behalf. At times this could create a conflict of interest, issues with professional boundaries or ensure processes followed are professional. If at any point a client asks you to be an advocate, please discuss this with your coordinator or the centre manager to ensure you are not put in a difficult position with the client or organisation.

ADVOCACY SERVICES

The following advocacy service is available for people to access:

ADA Australia, Your aged and disability advocates – a not for profit, independent, community based advocacy and education service. They offer free, confidential and client focused support. Contact details:

Preheat oven 180 c. Grease (I use spray oil) shallow baking dish or muffin tray. Fry the bacon until golden brown.

In a bowl add zucchini, diced capsicum, chopped shallots, bacon and cheese. Toss the ingredients in 2 or 3 tablespoons of plain flour or cornflour. Place ingredients in shallow tray or spoon loosely into the muffin trays.

Whisk together eggs, milk and salt and pepper. Pour over the mixed ingredients and place ½ a tomato in each muffin tray or scatter several cut tomatoes over the dish. Bake in oven for approx. 45 mins or until set and golden brown.

If you feel that there is not enough egg mixture just whisk up another egg or two and milk. This recipe is perfect for adding any extra vegetables such as mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, baby spinach, leek or even leftover roasted vegetables.
