February 2015 Breeze

Kansas City ASHRAE Members!

As we transition into the new year, I wanted to point out how unique ASHRAE is when

compared to other professional societies. Our organization is operated and controlled by the

individual members. Motions put forth by members at Central Regional Conferences (CRC) are

voted on and approved by Chapters. The approved motions are then brought to the Society

level for approval and implementation. If you have an idea to improve or change ASHRAE, we

want to hear from you! Please bring your ideas to our local Board of Governors.

Although our 2015 CRC is still six months away, it is never too early to start planning a trip. This

year, it will be held July 23-25 in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Also, we need to

continue to keep 2017 in our thoughts, as that will be the year our KC chapter will host the

CRC.

Our February meeting will be a very interesting discussion regarding document management

and how to protect ourselves as engineers. Please make sure to invite a potential new member

and I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd

!

Want to Help Out? Mentors Needed for a Day!

Last year was a big success for our chapter’s Student Job Shadowing Program. We had over 60 students participate! We’re putting the program on once again this year Groups of junior and senior students from Kansas City area high schools will be paired with an engineering consulting firm or mechanical contracting firm for a 2 hour job shadow. They will get the opportunity to learn about the industry, learn of typical tasks performed, get a tour of their firm’s office, and get to see examples of projects.

We are looking for companies to volunteer and provide mentors to participate in this program. Your company will have the chance to influence prospect future engineers and contractors. This is a great way to get youth familiar with your company! The mentoring day will occur at the end of March to early April. Companies will be given an example itinerary. Please e-mail Ann Peratt with any questions or to sign up your company.

Historian Announcement

ARMOUR BUILDING - FIRST OFFICE BUILDING WITH AIR-CONDITIONING

Victor Goldschmidt mentioned in his presentation at the January meeting that the first air conditioned office building was the Armour Building in Kansas City. Like Victor I tried to find out additional information about this building, but all I could come up with is:

1902 First office building with an air-conditioning system installed

The Armour Building in Kansas City, Missouri, becomes the first office building to install an air-conditioning system. Each room is individually controlled with a thermostat that operates dampers in the ductwork, making it also the first office building to incorporate individual "zone" control of separate rooms.

If someone has more information, please let me know. Blake Ellis Kansas City Chapter Historian [email protected]

ASHRAE Research

Promotion

Campaign.

National Goal $2.4 million

KC Chapter Goal

$31,800

Last year our chapter members and

companies contributed $28,964.

ASHRAE Research Mission:

To improve the quality of life

and to answer tomorrow’s

questions through research

TODAY.

What is the RP Campaign?

The RP Campaign is an annual fundraising campaign

benefiting the funding of numerous ASHRAE Programs.

These programs include:

• ASHRAE Research

• ASHRAE Scholarships for undergraduate students

• Education: ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI)

development of new courses & materials

• ASHRAE Foundation: Research Endowed Funds

• Graduate Research Projects (Grants-in-Aid)

• Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) Leadership

Training

• Permanently endowed support to all of the above

programs

The RP Campaign is overseen by the RP

Committee, a standing ASHRAE Committee. The

Committee is made up of 14 Regional Vice Chairs

(RVC), 1 Consultant (past RVC), 3 Vice Chairs (past

Consultant), and Chair (past Vice Chair). Staff

support includes a 3-member team based at

ASHRAE Headquarters.

The RP Campaign raises over $2.2 million a year

from over 6,000 donors. These donors are made

up of ASHRAE Members, industry associations,

and industry organizations.

If you need further information please contact RP

Staff–[email protected] -they’ll be happy to help

answer your questions or direct you to another

staff member who specializes in that area.

ASHRAE Full Circle

Every BOG member has completed their personal commitment by contributing at least $100. We

have achieved ASHRAE’s “Full Circle” designation.

What is the Kansas City Chapter Membership?

As of December 2014, the Kansas City Chapter has 796 registered members,

• 321 Members

• 304 Associate Members

• 170 Student Members at KSU, KU & UMKC).

What would the world look like without ASHRAE Research?

You and I wouldn’t have a job! Our livelihoods really depend on ASHRAE Research . . . really!

Since its beginnings in 1919, ASHRAE Research has grown and expanded to address the ever changing

questions and topics facing both its members and the HVAC&R Industry and the world as a whole.

The ASHRAE Handbook is constantly evolving to address these new challenges, fueled by the

knowledge and principals developed through ASHRAE Research. As the focus of the industry has

evolved from home refrigeration and food safety to improved indoor air quality to sustainability and

energy efficiency, this four-volume series continues to be the cornerstone in every ASHRAE

Member’s career.

The power behind ASHRAE Research and the four-volume Handbook comes directly from YOU: your

financial support is the driving force behind every research project conducted worldwide; your

financial investment is an investment in the future of the HVAC&R industry; your donation to ASHRAE

Research fills the more than 3,600 Handbook pages.

What would the ASHRAE Handbook look like without your support of ASHRAE Research? At our next

meetings, we will take a look at just one chapter and imagine a world without this guidance from

ASHRAE over the last 90 years.

Thank you for all your support
