Of particular note is the chapter raising over $130,000 for Research Promotion, finally surpassing Rocky Mountain House chapter. Ken Shifflett will receive the top RP chair award in Chicago for his efforts. YEA co-chairs Rachel Haines Downey and Chase Bielamowicz have outdone themselves by organizing a Daiken plant tour on August 10. All YEA members should plan to attend. The chapter is honored to host the incoming Region Director and Regional Chair (DRC), Jon Symko, for his first chapter visit. This is significant because Jon is a Houston Past President and a major player in the Houston HVAC market. Please plan to attend the August 16 chapter lunch meeting and hear Jon’s plans for ASHRAE Society and Region. All The Best, Bill Chalmers P.E. ASHRAE Houston Chapter 2017-18 President

Board Planning Session July 25, 2017 Attendees: Chase Bielamowicz, Bill Chalmers, Rachel Haines Downey, Bruce Flaniken, Jeff Hunter, Mike Langton, Kurt McCulloch, Alan Neely, Ken Shifflett, , Kapil Upadhyaya, Josh Vanlandingham, John Walik, Jon Symko Region Report Region VIII DRC, Jon Symko, share his MBOs: #1 – Increase “active” members by creating a region development committee. #2 – increase individual member’s RP contribution #3 – Increase chapter’s student, YEA, women memberships. Jon requested student activities organize an induction ceremony for Lamar student branch. Society does not have an official induction ceremony. Jon is creating the ceremony forma which will be used for the first time at Lamar. Jon explained that he is working on setting up the Region VIII website and Basecamp. Please be patient. Chapter participation in CRC basecamp should only be the chapter newsletter editor and the chapter president. President elect will have access after attending president elect training. Ken noted that the CRC delegate and alternate should also have access. Jon concurred and is asking Pam Duffy to send the invitation. Bill pointed out the extensive representation at Region by Houston chapter members: DRC – Jon Symko RP – Mike Donovan Treasurer – Keith Riehl Membership – Alan Neely Historian - Bruce Flaniken Golden Gavel Committee – Hugh McMillan Introductions Bill introduced the board members with emphasis on ASHRAE participation. We discovered many interesting facts about one another and realized the board has seven former past presidents and many people with experience in other chapters. Logistics Bill reviewed how the chapter conducts business Basecamp • Primarily a repository of documents. Bill reviewed folders and their content. • Bill invited people to use the communication features but noted that he is not

using them as a primary means of communication. • Confirmed everyone has access except Jeff Hunter. Bill provided access after

the meeting. Review PAOE points • Bruce Flaniken explained the history and purpose of PAOE points

• The 2016/17 results were reviewed. It was noted that Region VIII generates

many more points than other regions. • Bill reviewed the PAOE summary with his comments. He pointed out that

clarifications are often needed because the descriptions can be vague. • One is not expected to do every PAOE point item, but the activities indicates

what is expected from a well run chapter. Board agenda

• Bill reviewed the new minute format that is a repository of the many activites assigned by Region and Society.

• Tell people to look for assigned action items and dates MBOs

• Point out MBO assignments to the various committee chairs. • Jon’s MBO template was reviewed along with Bruce/Victoria’s format • Chairs are welcome to use their preferred format.

Chapter MBOs.

• Bill said that he observed that consulting engineers did not participate in last year’s program. The group concurred and gave the following reasons consultants and owners are not participating:

o CEs will not allow young engineers time off work. o Need to get principals to allow engineers to attend or take their young engineers to the

meeting. o Young engineers are reluctant to ask managers if they can attend. o Some principal engineers are afraid of their young engineers being solicited for employment by

other firms if they attend ASHRAE events. o Chase and Rachel are disappointed at the low attendance at YEA events. Rachel has a mailing

list of 400 people but only about 20 people attend a typical YEA event. She says YEA events are often another gathering of vendors.

o Many CE firms will pay for membership, but employees are not aware of the program. o REACH program is available to promote membership. Jeff recommended using member list to

encourage participation. o Hospital people participate in TAHFM, HEAT, etc. to stay current with Joint Commission updates.

ASHRAE is too industry specific. Travelling from the medical center is also a problem. o Commercial building operators get their information from BOMA o Kapil thinks architects are interested in certain topics providing they are registered for AIA CEUs.

• Bill shared his observations as Chapter Technology Transfer chair that very few consultants attended chapter meetings with speakers they needed to meet. However, consultants did attend the ASHRAE 90.1 presentation.

• The board must focus on making the ASHRAE chapter relevant and increasing their participation. Bill explained his chapter vision: Everyone in the Houston HVAC and refrigeration community is knowledgeable of ASHRAE's technical and education information. Bill explained that many people in the HVAC industry know that ASHRAE publishes books, magazines, handbooks and standards. Many people also wish they had time to read these publications. They know that the information would make them better at their jobs and ensure their projects are designed properly. The Houston chapter needs to make it easy for people to learn ASHRAE's technical information. The benefits of pursuing this vision are: • Increased membership • Increased participation • More money raised for research promotion

Page 13: President’s Message - ASHRAE Houston...Sporting Clay Tournament September 15, 2017 - American Shooting Center Bowling Tournament November 17, 2017 - Bowlmor Poker Tournament February

• Professional development hours for participants Chapter objectives for 2017/18 will help achieve the vision: Objective #1 - Broadcast Chapter Meetings as a Webinar Objective #2 - Conduct as many of the ASHRAE Group Learning classes as possible during the chapter year. Priority is given to: • ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality • ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Code • HVAC Controls • Psychrometrics • Air System Design • Water System Design • Acoustics Objective #3 - Increase active membership by 20% Objective #4 - Double the chapter individual member's Research Promotion contributions. • Discussion ensued about ASHRAE Group Learning Classes. Manufacturer’s rep firms already offer

training at a much lower cost than Bill recommended. Information shared was: o TAS, HTS, Trane and Carrier offer courses o HTS is charging $50 per class o Carrier is charging $600 for 11 courses.

It was questioned if people would pay a premium for ASHRAE material. Bill thanked everyone for their time and ideas. The meeting ended at 3 pm.

An Interview with ASHRAE Fellow Member David E. Claridge, Ph.D., P.E.

History: ASHRAE- Houston Chapter

Article by Victoria HermanKnow a Fellow we should interview? Let us know!

“ASHRAE’s Honors and Awards program recognizes the dedicated ASHRAE Members who give freely oftheir time and expertise to fulfill the Society’s mission of advancing the arts and sciences of HVAC&R to

serve humanity and provide a sustainable world.”

While reading this description on the ASHRAE website, I immediately thought of the phone call I had tomake to interview Dr. David Claridge. Through our conversation, I learned about a shining example ofjust how one gives their time freely and makes notable contributions in advancing our industry whilemaking a positive impact on humanity and the world.

Dr. Claridge is the Director of the Energy Systems Laboratory and the Leland Jordan Professor ofMechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University where he has spent over 30 years of his career. Tostart the interview, I asked him about his career path.

I noticed that all of your degrees are in physics. Can you tell me about your career path andwhat attracted you to engineering and the HVAC industry?

His response was a joke to the effect of ‘Is it not common for a Physics major to work in buildingenergy efficiency?’ He explained that after college, he had planned to become a physicsprofessor. However, life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned. Dr. Claridge explained

that when he was nearing graduationthe market for a Physics Professorswas suppressed and the UnitedStates was in the middle of the oilcrisis. Waking up at 6 AM to fill upwith a tank of gas, he wondered whatthe rest of his life would be like, andbegan taking an interest in energy.

After acting on his interest heeventually was put in contact withsomeone working on an energyefficiency study. He volunteered anddid investigation work that led to himbeing one of only two graduate

students invited to attend a study at Princeton with other pioneers in the building energyefficiency industry, like Art Rosenfeld, Berkeley physicist (the godfather of energy efficiency). This study and the work he facilitated eventually led to the founding of the Energy EfficientBuildings Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

This work confirmed his interest in the field and he continued working and doing research in thebuilding energy efficiency industry. Within ten years, his path led him back to universities

sharing his knowledge with students.

Dr. Claridge said his move to Texas A&M turned out to be a good move which led to a lot ofopportunities he probably wouldn’t have experienced elsewhere. With a history of continuedinvolvement in the advancement of the building energy industry and as a Professor for more than 30years, I wondered what are some of his current concerns regarding the industry?

What are some of the challenges that both you and your colleagues face?

In his opinion, while there is significantly more interest in energy efficiency now, one of thechallenges in advancement of the field is that energy prices are currently low, driving downdemand for efficiency. Regardless, he still feels strongly that the work that they are doing isimportant when you look at our environment and the current state of affairs.

Another challenge that Dr. Claridge encountered was a good one. He explained that currentlythey are working to start an Architectural Engineering program at Texas A&M. This programwould allow engineering students that have already decided to study building engineering andenergy consumption to enter the career in a more direct pathway. It would allow studentsmore opportunities in these studies while still meeting ABET requirements, which sometimesplays a role in what a traditional mechanical engineering student must study with the broaderdegree. Dr. Claridge mentioned that they often hear from companies, that it takes graduateswith a mechanical engineering degree a few years post college to be brought up to speed whenthey work in the building engineering industry. The Architectural Engineering program that he isworking to create should speed this process up.

Dr. Claridge did note that although it this may be a more direct /better path, we can benefitfrom every experience we’ve had. Using his own life as an example, he said if he had finishedhis degrees 5 years earlier, he probably would be a Physics Professor, and never would havediscovered the work that he’s most passionate about.

As we talked about the path our careers take, I remembered that he has been extremely active inASHRAE for years. He has served on numerous committees and was a major contributor to the methodsused to measure energy savings in the International Performance Measurement and VerificationProtocol and ASHRAE Guideline 14.

How and when did you get started in ASHRAE?

Dr. Claridge said that his first involvement with ASHRAE started when he attending a nationalmeeting in Cincinnati in the early 1980s. He said his first impression was favorable because heonly observed sessions during the day, missing the amount of work that was going on with thecommittees. Thereafter, he began working on technical committees for energy calculations

which led to various roles throughout the years. He has been involved with special publicationsworking on many committees as well as the College of Fellows. He realized early on, that if hewanted his work to be connected with the rest of the trade, ASHRAE was where he needed tobe.

Without having to ask the next question, Dr. Claridge addressed it as he elaborated on ASHRAE.

Has your involvement lead to any significant impacts to your career personally?

Dr. Claridge believes that some of his most impactful work today steered from work that wasstarted when he was in Colorado. He told me a story about the student recreational centerbeing responsible for paying theirenergy costs and how this led to astudy that he worked on with JeffHaberl (now a Professor at Texas A&Mas well) regarding energy use for thefacility. He explained that afterlearning about the systems already inuse they found that simple changes inoperations led to a 25% decrease inenergy cost after a retrofit wasperformed.

This pioneering work in retro-commissioning has led to a whole fieldof very important work for the entirebuilding industry. This signification asDr. Claridge explained is that theyhelped bridge engineering intosomething that building operatorscould implement and do it in a costeffective way.

This work in commissioning is one of the items that Dr. Claridge says stands out in his career to him asan area that he’s had a significant impact. That led to my next question,

Are there any other accomplishments that you are most proud of?

He believes his single most important accomplishment in terms of impact, will be the new ACunit he co-invented. The Molecular Membrane Air Conditioner (MMAC) will be a very important

step forward because of how the process separates the dehumidification and sensible cooling, without refrigerant. “It has the potential to be a true game changer.”

With regards to education, he is excited about starting the Architectural Engineering Program,an achievement that could not be made possible without the support from the University witha goal to grow the engineering department to 25,000 students by the year 2025.

As our time drew to an end, I felt as if I learned a lot from him already, but I wanted to more advice topass on to those in the industry or those considering the industry.

What advice would you give to a young engineer entering the HVAC field?

His advice? “Follow your passion!” We spend a large majority of our time working, whichmakes it all the more important to feel good about what you are doing. Dr. Claridge recalled atrip he had a while ago to Thailand where he noticed young engineers changing jobs very often, just following a slightly higher salary. His impression was, “work that’s important to youpersonally will give you much more satisfaction than just a higher salary.”

Before ending our call, Dr. Claridge told me that he feels blessed to be able to work on things that hethinks are important. It was a pleasure getting to know him a little more and witnessing how someonewho gives their time freely can advance the arts and sciences, serve humanity and provide all of us witha more sustainable world.

Dr. Claridge

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

ASHRAE ANNUAL MEETING IN HOUSTON JUNE, 2018

The ASHRAE Annual Meeting will be held in Houston at the Hilton Americas in June, 2018. The technical program will be presented starting on Sunday, June 24 and end on Wednesday, June 27. It is the Host Committee’s responsibility to provide 2 monitors for each session. The monitors’ responsibilities are to scan the badges of the attendees for purposes of providing documentation of professional development hours for those attendees that require it and to help resolve any issues that may arise with the audio/visual presentation. Approximately 32 monitors will be required for the Sunday sessions and 18 will be required for each of the Monday through Wednesday session. In order to cover this requirement, we would like to recruit at least 100 individuals to provide this service. In exchange for your volunteer efforts, your registration for the meeting will be complementary and if you need the continuing education credits to maintain your professional license, you can scan your own badge for each session you monitor and get 3.5 to 4 pdh credits. The registration fee for the Annual Meeting will be more than $500, so this is quite valuable to the volunteer.

We will start actively promoting the need for volunteers next month and will be putting a roster together starting in January. If you are interested in helping the Houston Chapter by volunteering to serve as a monitor, please contact me via email at [email protected]. Later this year we will start promoting this opportunity at other chapters in Region VIII and across Society, but we want to make this available to our Houston Chapter Members first!
