What is the difference between teasing & bullying?

As I was looking for this month’s article- my 8 year old came in & looked at the title, “What is the difference between teasing & bullying? She promptly said-

THERE IS NO DIFFERNCE THEY ARE BOTH MEAN and YOU SHOULDN’T

DO EITHER!! From the mouth of babes…. Here is what the article

from Izzy Kalman, MS Nationally Certifi ed School Psychologist has to

say. “Different bullying experts have different ideas about the difference between teasing & bullying. Most of them think that the difference is in the intention of the person doing it. According to this, the teasing is intended to make the victim laugh, while bullying is meant to hurt the victim. This distinction is used by adult authority to determine whether a kid should be punished. If the insulter was just “teasing,” then the behavior is not so bad & perhaps doesn’t deserve punishment. But if the teaser was intending to upset the victim, then that is bullying & needs to be responded to more harshly. While I think this, makes sense, it does not describe well what goes on in the life of the victim & is not useful for our purposes. You can make fun of someone with the intention of making them laugh, but they will become angry with you, & you will get angry in return. What began as something playful was turned by the victim into a hostile situation. On the other hand, you can make fun of someone because you are angry with them & want to upset them. But they can respond in a way that defuses the situation, takes your anger away, & turns your attitude toward them into a friendly one. So ultimately, what’s really important for helping people deal with insults is not the intention of the insulter but the response of the victim. “I couldn’t agree more with: “the response from the victim.” This is why we believe healthy self- esteem is SOOOOO important!! Look for more from this report next month. In the meantime demonstrate empathy to others, so your kids

can learn from the BEST.Blessings & Happy Valentines, Terri

Don’t Be a Bully, Be a Buddy!

Not only is February the month of LOVE, it’s also: National

Cherry Month, National Grapefruit month, National Wild Bird Feeding Month,

National Responsible Pet Owners’ Month. What does all of this mean, are we suppose

to eat cherries, feed all the wild birds, and be responsible pet owners? Well according to

eatingwell.com, cherries are rich in antioxidants: anthocyanidins, which bolster antioxidant defenses

& quercetin, which may help regulate blood pressure. They are also a good source of fi ber, potassium &

vitamins A and C. (and kids love cherries) and they say Grapefruits are not only excellent sources of

vitamin C, they are also good sources of fi ber, vitamin A, potassium, folate & vitamin B5. Be a responsible

pet owner and keep your pets groomed and cleaned. Isable at Bella’s Dog Grooming is a great groomer. Bella’s is located at 1015 N. Midkiff- 262.2692. And what about Wild Bird Feeding? According to Virginia Tech the decision to feed wild birds is not a casual one. The dedicated bird feeder buys hundreds of pounds of feed each winter. Additionally, several times each week the food needs to be replenished, which over several months & years amounts to a substantial investment of time. Such a commitment carries with it the expectation of attracting a handsome, interesting variety of birds.” Yep that’s me, Terri, the wild bird feeder- seriously- I have purchased most every kind of bird seed mix there is. I even mix in with it fresh fruit. And you have to feed them regardless of the weather. We have feeders in the front & back yard. Rain, sleet, sunshine or west Texas winds, we’re feeding those birds! My kids & I love watching the birds out the windows,

sometimes we even pull up a chair and all sit in it together and oooh and awww over the beautiful

colors. That’s my love story for the month-feeding the wild birds with my children. The

birds love it, the kids love it, & who doesn’t love it when the kids are ooohing &

awwwing?

FEVER Fevers are your body’s natural response to infection, and not necessarily a sign

that something serious is taking place. Low-grade fevers are generally not serious, are easily treated, and can wait until

the morning to be evaluated by your doctor. Fevers of 101 to 103 (38.4 to 39.5 Celcius) are also generally not serious and can

wait until morning to be evaluated, except as indicated below. High fevers of 104 (40 Celcius) or higher that quickly come down to 100 or 101 (37.8 to 38.3 Celcius) with the treatment measures below are also generally not

serious and can wait until morning, except as indicated below. TOP THREE CAUSES

Viral infection – this is the most common cause of fever in children. Examples are: Roseola, Colds, Flu, Coxsackie (hand, foot and mouth disease), Chicken Pox, Fifth Disease, and many others. Most viruses are not dangerous. They simply need to

run their course over several days. They are not treatable with antibiotics. Bacterial infection – Some examples include ear infection, sinus infection, pneu-

monia, bladder infection, and strep throat. These are treatable with antibiotics, although treatment can usually wait 12 hours until you can contact you doctor in the

morning. Teething– this can cause fevers, though usually not higher than 101.

Self EsteemSelf EsteemSelf Esteem

15Find Kirby and go to Find Kirby and go to

One of the core things we can all agree on as parents is that helping a child to develop positive self-esteem is very impor-tant. It is one of the corner stones to a mentally healthy life. Positive self-esteem allows children to be brave & reach out to try new things. Without knowing it, a positive feeling of self-worth allows children to fail without being failures. A parent, who through actions, shows a child that no matter what he does he is loved, helps their child develop a positive sense of belonging. And it is the belief that they belong, that what they say & do matters, empowers children to have self-respect and builds self-esteem. Here are 3 great self-esteem builders. Read next month about Paying attention, supporting healthy risk & celebrating the positive.1) Give unconditional love. A child’s self-esteem fl ourishes with the kind of no-strings-attached devotion that says, “I love you, no matter who you are or what you do.” Your child bene-fi ts the most when you accept her for who she is regardless of her strengths, diffi culties, temperament, or abilities. So lavish her with love. Give her plenty of cuddles and kisses. And don’t forget to tell her how much you love her. When you do have to correct your child, make it clear that it’s her behavior - not her - that’s unacceptable. Instead of saying, “You’re a naughty girl! Why can’t you be good?” say, “Pushing Olivia isn’t nice. It can hurt. Please don’t push.”

2) Let mistakes happen. The fl ip side, of course, of having choices & taking risks is that sometimes your child is bound to make mistakes. These are valuable lessons for your child’s confi dence. When you goof up yourself, admit it, says Daniel Meier, assistant professor of elementary education at San Francisco State University. Acknowledging & recovering from your mistakes sends a powerful message to your child - it makes it easier for your child to accept his own shortcomings.3) Listen well. If your child needs to talk, stop & listen to what she has to say. She needs to know that her thoughts, feelings, desires, & opinions matter. Help her get comfortable with her emotions by labeling them. Say, “I know you’re sad because camp is over.” By accepting her emotions without judgment, you validate her feelings & show that you val-ue what she has to say. If you share your own feelings (“I’m excited about going to the play with you”), she’ll gain confi dence in express-ing her own.

Can you give me two examples of something you would like your parents or an adult to listen to: #1______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________#2______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
