2 Please No Cell Phones in School Zones!

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch.. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: ‘Take only ONE . God is watching.’ Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, ‘Take all you want. God is watching the apples.’

It’s October and boy do we have a busy month ahead of us. We are going to be at the Women’s Expo and at the Out Of the Darkness Walk. Please come by and see us at the Women’s Expo and come Walk with us at the Out of the Darkness Walk. Kids Korner Family Magazine is looking for a team of 50 walkers. Please JOIN US IN THE WALK for suicide awareness. As you know, suicide is the third leading cause of death for our kids. People, we live in the most wonderful country on the earth and our kids are taking their own lives (stats show 12 per day!! They say it’s actually higher) because of bullies and not being able to cope with the world they live in. According to Family First Aid, poor teen self esteem can lead to emotional and mental issues. Depression can stem from feeling as though you are not good enough. In some cases, teenagers who cannot overcome their feelings of hopelessness and low self esteem resort to suicide. We need your help for awareness. I found a great article at suite101.com for some easy self- esteem activies for children I want to share. Self-Esteem Activities For Children: 1. Help set the table with spoons, napkins, placemats 2. Help clear the table after meals 3. Wash the table after meals with a cloth or sponge 4. Carry in the mail or newspaper 5. Pick up toys, clothes and shoes Again I am so guilty of this. I want to do everything for my kids. But at the same I want them to learn responsibility. Which also leads to healthy self-esteem. Its seems all is to interconnected. But as parents we do far too much for our children, so much so that our kids get the unspoken message that they are incapable of doing things for him or herself. (or that they are self-entitled for someone else to do it for them!) Think back to when you were trying to help your young child get dressed, or when you were trying to help tie their shoes and your son or daughter said, “Let me do it, I can do it myself!” Children want and need to feel they can do things by themselves, without any help from parents. Giving children age-appropriate activities, chores and responsibilities within the home, along with praise and encouragement from parents, helps build self-esteem. As soon as children have learned how to walk without help from parents, children can learn to feel good about themselves, their abilities and accomplishments.Until next time, Blessings, Terri Schroeter, Publisher/Owner Ephesians 4:32 “Be KIND to one another Have a Loving &

Understanding Heart”

Oprah’s No Phone Zone PledgeI pledge to make my car a No Phone Zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by pledging the safest driving behavior. I commit to:

___ I will not text while driving and will use only handsfree calling if I need to speak on the phone while I am driving.

___ I will not text or use my phone while I am driving. If I need to use my phone, I will pull over to the side of the road.

I will ask other drivers I know to do their part to end distracted driving. I pledge to make a difference.

Self Esteem Children with high self esteem are more likely to believe in themselves and have a sense of importance and self respect. Self esteem affects how your children will approach new tasks or challenges and how they interact with others. Children with low self esteem may avoid challenging activities or may give up quickly, quit, or cheat when things aren’t going their way. A child with low self esteem may also be a bully, bossy, controlling, have a low level of self control, and have diffi culty making friends. Children with high self esteem feel a sense of trust, security and feel accepted by others. They understand their own self-worth, have self control and are willing to take on challenging or diffi cult tasks.

To help with building self esteem you can spend lots of time with your children, especially in activities that they enjoy and are good at, and allow them to make some of their own decisions, so they can learn responsibility and can feel that you trust them. Learn to praise your children during adolescence and to pay positive attention to them and teach them how to accept praise for their accomplishments. Avoid criticizing your children too much. Also, do not always rush to rescue your children from frustrating experiences. Instead, try and help them solve the problem themselves.

It can help boost your children’s self esteem if they feel like they are making a positive contribution to the family. Give them age appropriate chores to do (such as setting the table, taking out the garbage, putting her clothes away, etc), and allow them to do them on their own. Even if they aren’t doing the chores perfectly, don’t be quick to jump in and help or correct them.

Keep in mind that many children’s self esteem will drop as they begin adolescence. You can help at this time by making sure that they understand and are prepared for all of the changes their body and mind are going through. Be available for communication and reassure them as much as possible.

Ways to stay Bully FREEHello kids, now that you have been back at school for over a month I hope it has been fun. But incase you have run into a bully a two, here are a few of things you can do to help. #1. When you’re walking in a public place, don’t look at the ground. Look around you and notice other people who are there.#2. Always tell a trusted friend or caring adult where you are going.#3. Stay with a group of kids-even if they aren’t your friends.#4. Stay away from anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable or afraid.#5. If someone has you trapped in a corner, or anywhere- SHOUT OUT FOR HELP!#6. Travel in groups when you’re on the playground. Always stay close to at least one friend.#7. ACT CONFIDENT!!#8. If you are in danger, RUN!#9. Always report bullying-if it happens to you or to someone else.#10. In front of the mirror practice saying, “leave me alone” and “Stop It.” Free spirit publishing
