“Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous

for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God.” 1 Peter 3 Dear Parishioners and Friends;

This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent and the opportunities for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. But why is it, some will ask, that Catholics have to spend 40 days meditating on the suffering of Jesus throughout Lent? Why can’t we just skip the season of Lent and arrive right at Easter? Or as some are thinking, why can’t we just ignore the predictions of the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil and go right into Spring?

The season of Lent purposefully begins in the middle of winter because it helps us better understand life. Life involves times of suffering. Suffering can come from a variety of circumstances, persons or experiences that can leave us feeling dark, cold and alone. But the good news is that Lent does not end with winter, or as one could say, with true despair, because we can reach out to God in the midst of our suffering. God always reaches out to us with an invitation of divine love. The good news is that we are never truly alone or without purpose in our suffering.

Jesus transforms our sufferings by virtue of his cross and resurrection so that we can be led from sin into forgiveness, from darkness into light, from Lent to Easter, from winter into spring, and from eternal death into eternal life.

Saint John Paul II wrote that Jesus “has taken upon himself the physical and moral sufferings of the people of all times, so that in love they may find the salvific meaning of their sorrow and valid answers to all of their questions”. (Salvifici Doloris, No. 31)

May God bless you this week! Fr. Gonyo

ST. RITA SCHOOL

Spirit of Learning Corner

HERE’S WHATS HAPPENING!

+ Hola! On Monday students interested in learning

Spanish were able to participate in their first Spanish Club meeting of 2018. They are definitely getting an edge on learning a foreign language for their Junior High and Senior High school years.

+ Wednesday was a very special day at St. Rita

School. Students were able to dress down in red to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. Students distributed Valentine Day cards to their classmates and teachers. (not all classes had a party) – keeping the day low key in reverence of Ash Wednesday too!

+ Wednesday was also our Ash Wednesday School

Mass. Students in Mrs. Sutley’s 5th Grade class led the school in this Liturgy which began the Lenten season.

+ Friday was the much anticipated Winter Fun Day.

Students in Grades K-4 spent Friday afternoon in and around St. Rita’s campus participating in a variety of winter-based, friendly, competitive games designed by Coach Mutrie. School Spirit was fully alive and contagious.

+ Keeping with school tradition, the 5th Grade students

had a very memorable Winter Fun Day at Harris Whalen Park. Students spent the entire day sledding, snacking, playing games, and drinking hot chocolate at the park. In the evening the 5th Graders and their families returned to the park for more sledding and fun for the entire family.

MAKE THIS THE BEST LENT EVER!

Lent is the perfect time to form new life-giving habits and abandon old self-destructive habits. But most of us just give up chocolate. Then, when Easter arrives, we realize we really haven’t grown spiritually since the beginning of Lent. Lent is not just about giving things up, like chocolate. Lent is about doing something—something bold to become a better person! What if this year you did more than just give up something during Lent? Do something life-changing.

Ladies - join us for our Lenten Book Study

“Perfectly YOURSELF” By Matthew Kelly

WHEN: Tuesday, February 27 to March 27

TIME: 9:00am-10:00am

Full of powerful and practical lessons, Matthew Kelly shows us how to find lasting happiness in a changing world. Perfectly Yourself is a book for anyone who has failed at a diet, survived the collapse of a relationship,

or wondered if he or she would ever find a fulfilling career. Kelly teaches us how to find the balance between accepting ourselves and striving to become all God dreams for us to become. It’s a book for all of us who long to be at peace with who we are, where we are, and what we are doing, not in some distant tomorrow, but here and now—today.

St. Rita Parish invites you to an

ALL NEW Bible Study Program

Starting the First Week in March

All Webster Parishes Are Invited!

“DAVID the KING” by Bishop Robert Baron

This spring, we will be offering a study of King David by noted author and video lecturer Bishop Robert Baron. You may remember him from our popular series, “Catholicism” that we did a few years ago. David’s kingship recalls that of Adam in the Garden of Eden, and yet it points toward the King par excellence, Jesus Christ. The New Testament foretold a son of David who would realize the fullness of Israelite kingship … but whose actual reign defied expectation. King David causes us to look back toward Adam’s kingship and forward toward Christ the King, seeing Christ as the fulfillment of the Davidic line and the realization of the Kingdom of God on earth. In Bishop Barron's new film and study program, “David the King,” Bishop Barron helps us to understand this pivotal figure in light of the first king and the King of kings.

Three separate sessions are offered beginning March 5, 7 & 8 and runs for 7 weeks.

Groups meet on Monday mornings, Wednesday evenings & Thursday evenings

You can “Mix and Match” attending any of the sessions in the same week.

The dates and times are as follows:

Group 1 will meet Monday mornings in Room 1 from 10:00 - 11:30 am o March 5, 12, 19, April 2, 9, 16, 23

Group 2 will meet Wednesday evenings in Room 1 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm o March 7, 14, 21, April 4, 11, 18, 25

Group 3 will meet Thursday evenings in Room 1 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm o March 8, 15, 22, April 5, 12, 19, 26

TO REGISTER for this exciting program, please E-Mail the parish office at [email protected] or call the office at 671-1100 and let us know which session you would like to attend. The cost of materials (workbook & study guide) is $15. If you have specific questions please call Jerry Lupien at 794-3666 or by email: [email protected]
