Fantastic Fest Deck 2014

Launched in 2005 in Austin, Texas, Fantastic Fest has grown from the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas’ creative spirit and its founders’ love of genre and world cinema. Our festival specializes in films that evoke the word “fantastic” and celebrates world, national and regional premieres of new films and restored classics alike. A supporting member of the Méliès Fantastic Film Festival Federation, Fantastic Fest is the United State’s counterpart to Canada’s Fantasia and Spain’s Sitges. Variety president and publisher Charlie Koones named Fantastic Fest as one of “10 Film Festivals We Love”, in company with other industry heavy-hitters such as Cannes, Toronto and Telluride, and MovieMaker Magazine counts us as one of the “25 coolest film festivals in the world”. • Fantastic Fest offers a fertile launching ground for international film in North America and has introduced dozens of independent sleeper hits to the U.S. distribution market. RADiUSTWC co-president Tom Quinn says, Fantastic Fest is one festival at which Im almost guaranteed to find a gem every year. Unfortunately, most of my competitors now realize this, too. Each year, festival staff attends the March Du Film at Cannes, Toronto International Film Festival, Berlinale, American Film Market, European Film Market, Ventana Sur, Busan, PiFan, and other major international film festivals and markets, scouring the world for the best films on offer. During the week of our own festival, we provide buyers with additional amenities including industry-only screenings and exclusive access to VIP mixers, parties and luncheons. In 2013, we launched an international co-production market and a series of meet-and-greet sessions for acquisition executives to interface directly with filmmakers in order to further expand sales opportunities for the films we program.

Sales OpportunitiesWe felt the benefits of participating in Fantastic Fest immediately. As soon as the program was announced...the calls from sales agents, distributors, and even studios began in earnest. Evan Kelly, Director, THE CORRIDOR

  • Fantastic Market | Mercado Fantstico is an international co-production market for Latin American and Ibero-American genre films with the express mission of connecting international film projects with potential production partners, sales agents and distributors. The inaugural 2013 edition of the Fantastic Market featured pitching sessions for 16 projects either in development or the early pre-production stage; the 2014 market will expand to include work-in-progress screenings.

Fantastic Fest lead programmer Rodney Perkins and festival director Kristen Bell oversee the market, which Canana, the Mexican production and distribution outlet helmed by Gael Garca Bernal, Diego Luna, Pablo Cruz and Julian Levin, co-produces alongside filmmaker Robert Rodriguezs El Rey network. Cristina Garza, Vice President of Mundial, Cananas sales joint venture with IM Global, sources projects from the region.

Fantastic Market | Mercado FantsticoThe 16-project lineup reps an arresting mix of movies from key Spanish-speaking market producers and follow-ups from directors who have bowed to acclaim, international sales, and in two cases, U.S. remakes, plus the added attraction of movies from first-time or far less-known helming values. Variety

  • Fantastic Market Highlights

Filmmakers submitted one hundred projects to Fantastic Market in 2013. Of these, the Market team chose sixteen to present based on project viability, talent involved and a variety of other factors. A jury consisting of Tim League, Robert Rodriguez, Elijah Wood and Harry Knowles then selected the top four projects, with the first place Gold project receiving a production package that included services from Panavision, Chemistry, Assimilate and Sofia Films.

Establishing the Fantastic Market is a great opportunity to not only give the Ibero-American community a stage for their work in genre films...its also an outlet for the US Hispanic community to showcase their projects in an area where they are underserved. Robert Rodriguez

  • Beyond Fantastic Fest Fantastic Fest has made my career...I know that some directors have a particular festival attached to their whole biography; now I know mine. Nacho Vigalondo, Director, TIMECRIMES, EXTRATERRESTRIAL

Each year, Fantastic Fest recognizes the work of outstanding first-time feature directors via our prestigious Next Wave competition, sponsored by technology manufacturer AMD.
