Glen Solomon - Commodore

Hello Everyone,

Hope all is well for each of you as we end the summer months.

The Emerald Bay Cruise was OUTSTANDING. Thank you to all

that made the journey, enjoyed the weather, water, and food.

We had two new additions to the SPLASH Award.

Congratulations, I think.

We are in the Election months at the Club. If you are interested

in being part of the Leadership Team, please don’t hesitate to

get involved. Speak to the Nominating Committee Members, or

use the petition process as outlined in the By-Laws.

Please take a moment to remember Dave Peterson and

John Grote.

Dave and Barbara are early members since 1973. In 1989, Dave was “Mariner of the Year”. In

1997, Dave was part of the team that built out the west deck we all enjoy. We should remember

Dave when we watch a sunset on the back deck. He was a good member.

John and Brenda have been members since 1986. John, always with a smile and cheerful thing to

say, served the Club in many ways. He was often seen helping in the front room during events, he

was a Director in 2011, and almost every year he and Brenda served Bloody Marys on Opening

Day. John will be missed by all.

We have the Halloween Party at the end of this month. Let’s get scary.

This is a good club, with good members, doing good, fun things. There will always be swells and

wind in our travels, sometimes really high seas, but if we get to our port safe, it was a good trip.

We have “jelled” as a club these past two years with all the new members working with PMYC

veterans. I call that successful.

I have enjoyed being your Commodore these past two years. I want to thank you all for helping me

be successful. I hope I served you well. I have one more article to write next month and I’ll share

more thoughts then.

Sincerely,

Glen Solomon Commodore

Curt Bersche - Rear Commodore

We are all very saddened by the news of the passing of two

long-term members, Dave Peterson and John Grote.

Combined, Dave and John were members of PMYC for 71

years. Dave became a member in 1973 and John became a

member in 1986. They both loved the club and always had

inspirational words of wisdom and advice to pass along. The

stories that they would tell about the history of PMYC were very

enlightening. The memories of Dave and John will always be in

our hearts.

We had a pretty busy September with the Labor Day

weekend party, the start of Monday Night Football dinners and

the last cruise of the year, the Hors D’oeuvres Cruise. The

weather was beautiful, the water was incredibly warm, the food was awesome and everyone had a

fantastic time. Also in September, Kent and Kia Andersson entered the Scandinavian Autumn Fest

& Swedish Meatball Contest. Kent and Kia didn’t win, but their meatballs were by far the best. Don’t

forget the Halloween party on October 31 and thank you to all who help put on the fantastic events

that PMYC has to offer.

Thank you to all who have prepared a Friday Night Dinner so far this year. It is very much

appreciated and it is always great to enjoy our club members’ fantastic culinary skills. We still have

a lot of openings throughout the rest of the year so please sign up at the club or contact me at

[email protected]. It is a lot of fun getting in the galley and showing off your cooking

prowess.

I would like you all to welcome our newest members who were voted in to the Club in September:

Eric Heimbold and Mike Samuelsen. When you see them up at the Club, please introduce

yourself and make them feel at home.

Thank you and we will see you at the Club or on the water!

Greetings All,

Let’s take a moment to remember John Grote and

David Peterson. Many prayers to their families in the loss

of their loved ones.

year ending cruise to Emerald Bay. The water was great,

the weather was perfect and the food was outstanding.

making this cruise fun. Congratulations to Nick Cecola for winning the Poker run. Thanks to all who

made a hors d’oeuvres dish. 3rd

Thanks again to all who pitched in to make the cruises fun and great. These were my first cruises,

but not my last.

Races:

Oct. 11, PMYC along with Santa Monica Windjammers will be hosting the Oktoberfest/Heather

Perkoff race. Should be fun for all.

Slowly the year comes to an end and so does the memories. As the winds blow and the seas roar,

the sun rises and sets, each day of our lives are steps to the day of glory. Make it big, make it fun,

make your life memorable for those who love you everyday. The memory of life is all we have to

give each day. Farewell to our PMYC family who have passed away…….

Sam Edwards - Port Captain

Hello,

Some of you were able to go on the recent cruise to Catalina. I could only enjoy it through the pictures you took and the stories you tell. Someday I will get my old boat out there and be part of the fun.

My own travels allowed me to go to Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. If you have never been there you are seriously missing out on some amazing boats from America’s maritime history.

Our own docks have been busy with boats heading up and down the coast. Since I am mostly out of town, several members have stepped up to help out with the needs of these coastal travelers. I appreciate their assistance.

The October OD list is included in this edition of our newsletter. There are only two months left this year. Rest assured if you are a regular member and have not performed your OD duty yet, you will be doing it soon. You can still contact me for any preferred dates through the end of the year. Please contact me at [email protected]. Every member is obligated to this duty. If you don’t pick your own time to do this I have to choose it for you. Sign up early, sign up often.

Rusty Dooley TV CREDITS Comedy Central, Stump the Millionaire, 8 Guys and Tosh.0 . Rusty Dooley is one of today's hottest rising comedians. His high concept, high energy comedy leaves audiences gasping for air around the country and internationally. He recently returned from a world tour with Russell Peters, performing sold out shows in 5,000 seat theaters in the Far East and India. His visual style and theatrical show cross all language barriers. Dooley honed his craft at the Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip. His love for movies and passion for comedy have combined and developed over a 10-year period, and the result is Dooley's act as it is today. Where better to develop an act built around

movie scenes than Hollywood? Originally from Chicago, Dooley moved to Los Angeles in 1999. He showcased at all the local clubs and became a fixture at the Laugh Factory, Dublin's, and of course, the Comedy Store. The bar was set pretty high for him as he was forced to follow some of the biggest names in the business on stage every night. Even though he was the newcomer, it did not take long for the veterans to see the way he could get a crowd pumped up with his animated style and whirlwind blend of props and costumes. Nobody wanted any part of following him, nobody. Dooley was recently voted the Funniest Comic by 944 Magazine. He currently has a deal with Miramax Films to produce a one hour comedy DVD. His show features comedic scenes from classic films such as Top Gun, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Terminator, Jurassic Park, Alien, Batman, Braveheart and many more. His act stands out from that of a traditional comedian. Dooley takes his audiences on an adventure not soon forgotten. Catch him when you can.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER

Is one of Pacific Mariners Yacht Club’s

great traditions. Nearly every Friday

night (exceptions include cruise weekends

or a big event on Saturday) a PMYC

member volunteers to host dinner for the

membership.

They cook the meal in our professional

galley or bring in a meal created by a local

restaurant.

Prices usually run from $7-$12 per person,

depending on the fare served.

If you would like to prepare a Friday Night

Dinner, please contact Rear Commodore

Curt Bersche [email protected]

The Friday Night Dinner Sign-up sheet is posted in the galley.

Sign up and show off your cooking talents or amaze us with an old

family favorite recipe! It's all about members getting together and

starting the weekend with good times, good food and good friends!

Labor, of Love, Day Weekend Well, another Labor Day weekend has come and gone here at the BYC. But the debris field remains...

Yes, what started out as a foolproof plan for innocent fun, once again, managed to wash up on your

Commodore’s beach in a disastrous way. I ask you, what could go wrong with an event like, “Bold Cars and

Old Tars”, which featured old-time muscle cars, and a flotilla of antique wooden boats from days of

yore? Let me tell you...

We thought it would be fitting to have one of the muscle cars perched atop the recently installed “Floating

Island” in the club’s inlet area. We got the idea from the PGA golf tour where they install a car in such a

way that the car seems to be floating on the surface of the water at different venues on the tour each week.

We even decided to have a “King” and “Queen” for the event. The King was determined to be,

appropriately, a 1971, “Boat Tail”, Buick Riviera, cherished possession of one of our members,

Eddie Lemayne. The Queen, of course, would be our own original flagship, the 45 foot Arroyo Seco l. We

took her out of mothballs for this special occasion. She was built in the late 60’s at the legendary Dufresne

boatyards in Zihuatanejo, and was a great example of the golden age of wooden yachts.

Anyway, we thought it would be a good idea to have our Rear Admiral, “Doobie” Shaminsky give the boat a

mini-shakedown cruise prior to the event since it had been a while since anyone had her out. Well, his

“doob-ness” decided about 2 hours into the shakedown that it might be a good idea to have a few hits on a

Fatboy, which he had brought along. But he only had one match. He rightly reckoned that it would be better

to have a renewable source of flame for his Fatboy. He wrongly reckoned that source to be the original

equipment alcohol fuel stove.

In the meantime, on a beach near Malibu, a “D List” celebrity wedding was taking place. Local cook-show

hostess, Mindy Macher was getting hitched to channel 99‘s weekend weather wonk, Lex Lopress. It being

the 4th for her and his 5th, they had arranged to have the flower boat set aflame and sent out to sea in a

Viking burial ceremony representing their past lovers and spouses. It was a rather large craft. At the

appropriate cue, the boat was set aflame and sent to sea on the tide giving off a scent of tropical flowers.

Just as the flaming mass was hissing its last and sinking, the horizon was filled with another flaming craft,

sailing hell bent for leather toward the beach giving off a scent of Asian hash. To the consternation of the

wedding planners and to the delight of the guests. they watched as the craft was consumed by flames just as

it hit the beach and disgorged a black-faced Doobie with a loud splash.

Mindy was leading the crowd rushing to help the survivor. As she reached him and cradled his head in her

arms witnesses say she exclaimed, “Doobie?” To which Doobie replied, “Mindy?” Turns out Doobie had

been Mindy’s number three.

Meanwhile, back at the club, everyone was admiring the levitating act of the Buick on the water, right up to

the point of the tide coming in. And a flood tide at that. Apparently, golf ponds do not have tidal

swings. Fortunately for Eddie Lemayne, the Harbor Patrol changed the citation from operating a craft

without a permit, as the old Buick tried valiantly to stay afloat, to creating a hazard to navigation, after it

sank. A slightly lesser fine.

No one has seen the Arroyo Seco l, Doobie or Mindy since. So far I have been able to duck the calls of

Lex Lopress, Mrs. Shaminsky, Eddie Lemayne, and the insurance company. Until next time, I remain your -

Commodore, pro tem, Dave Ammons, Burbank Yacht Club, “Gang Aft Agley”
