ExxonMobil Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship

Call for nominations [Deadline: January 15, 2014]

The ExxonMobil Foundation is sponsoring the ExxonMobil Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship, which includes an award in the form of an unrestricted grant of $10,000. The Solid State and Materials Chemistry Subdivision of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry administers the selection of the recipient. The fellowship will be formally presented at the Fall 2014 ACS Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

The Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellowship recognizes young scientists who have made substantial contributions to the discipline of solid-state chemistry and have the potential to emerge as leaders in the field. The Fellowship also recognizes solid-state chemistry as a critical science and engineering discipline that is a vital component of the research enterprise in the United States. The Fellowship was first awarded in 1979, and an award has been made every year since. The 2014 award will be the 35th. A list of former awardees can be found on http://acsdic.org/wordpress/awards/dic-professional-awards/exxonmobil-award/.

The recipient of the fellowship must hold a tenure-track faculty position at a U.S. institution, must not yet have received tenure, and, preferably, is not currently in the final stage of tenure review. Selection will be based on past and current independent contributions, and on the potential for future contributions to our knowledge of synthesis, properties, reactivity, structure, and bonding in solids.

Nominations must contain: (1) a nomination letter; (2) a one-page summary of current research interests; (3) a brief vitae; (4) a publication list; (5) two additional supporting letters; (6) copies of not more than three recent publications. The deadline for nominations is January 15, 2014. The award will be announced on March 1, 2014.

Nomination packages and letters of support, in the order noted above, should combined into a single PDF file and emailed as an attachment to Ram Seshadri, Solid State and Materials Chemistry Subdivision Chair, at [email protected]. For the fastest response, questions should be sent directly to Ram at [email protected].

Message from Chair, Kenneth D. Karlin

While the calendar year marking my serving as DIC Chair is in a few months coming to a close, I still feel that I'm in the thick of things. My main duties were to prepare for ACS National Meeting DIC Executive Committee Meetings, by gathering information from various sources, prepare an Agenda and then conduct the meetings. This year, they were held in New Orleans in April and the recent one in Indianapolis just over a month ago. I want to thank all the Executive Committee members for their dedicated service and their support in my running of meetings and for providing constructive input to the discussions. These meetings run two and one-half hours (or more) on the Saturday before the ACS meeting starts, and those hours are packed with agenda

items and important items for discussion. Special recognition goes to John Protasiewicz for his very hard and essential work for our division, Seth Cohen for his efforts as DIC Treasurer and Steve Koch and Nora Radu for their tireless work as Program Co-Chairs in putting together the details of programs for national meetings.! I also thank Jeff Long as our just Past-Chair who has always been there to answer questions or offer advice, and it is a particular pleasure to have worked this year with our Chair-Elect Debbie Crans, a long-time friend and colleague. Debbie is amazing in her devotion to our broader community, including of course inorganic chemistry and chemists. In the last year, she has pushed me (at my pleasure) and the division particularly in a number of directions, including toward the betterment of our DIC funding situation; the vast majority of monies go to support DIC ACS National Meeting symposia coming from proposals from the community, and then graduate student and undergraduate awards and/or travel subsidies. In addition, Seth Cohen has been particularly pro-active in seeking outside (e.g., industry) sources of funds to support our Young Investigator Award program. A variety of such or other efforts toward fundraising are now ongoing, in particular because of the pushes by Seth and Debbie. Debbie is also a great advocate and activist in inorganic chemist recognitions via awards for scientific achievement and/or service, the latter in particular in the last few years coming via ACS National and the ACS Fellow award. The DIC is now in great future hands via Debbie Crans.! I'd just like to mention some of the activities or duties that I had the pleasure of working on during my time as Chair-Elect and then Chair. These include coming up in late 2012 with a slate of nominees for replacements of DIC officer positions, officiating at the New Orleans DIC National Awards Plenary symposium, and helping to organize and host and/or chair or co-chair various symposia at Indianapolis; these were the Young Investigator Awards symposium, the Undergraduate Award symposium and the new Inorganic Lectureship Award Symposium (sponsored by the journal Inorganic Chemistry with Kit Cummins from MIT as our first awardee). Next year in the "Fall" ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, these symposia will be repeated with new winners; in addition there will be a new Organometallic Lectureship Awardee and accompanying symposium. There will be an amazingly large number of specialized symposia, covering a broad spectrum of topics of great contemporary interest for 2014, at both the Spring (March) ACS National Meeting in Dallas and the Fall (August) ACS National Meeting in San Francisco. Please come to these meetings and participate.

Message from Chair, Kenneth D. Karlin (continued)

At the upcoming Dallas meeting will the usual DIC ACS National Awards symposia, those built around the Plenary lectures symposium. My sincere congratulations go out to Don Tilley, Guy Bertrand, Ken Caulton and Larry Sneddon for their national awards for Inorganic Chemistry Distinguished Service, Inorganic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry and the Cotton Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, respectively. Further, we have Sara Skrabalak of Indiana University Bloomington, being honored as the winner of the ACS Award in Pure Chemistry, who has chosen the DIC as the 'home' in which to present her Award Lecture on novel inorganic-solids/materials. In addition, our own Steve Lippard won the ACS Priestley Medal, and the DIC decided to add a symposium in his honor at Dallas.

! Thank you very very much for allowing me to serve as the DIC 2013 Chair; it is an honor and has been a pleasure.

Message from 2013 Chair-Elect, Debbie Crans

During the past two 2013 ACS National Meetings as Chair-Elect I have been active in the decision making process for the division as well as assisting our Chair Kenneth Karlin, our Secretary John Protasiewicz, and our Treasurer Seth Cohen. I appreciate the opportunity for involvement as it puts me in a better situation to serve the DIC members and give me a head up on a range of issues that needs addressing. Indeed, we live in a time where many outside pressures dictate the health of our profession, and specifically, the discipline of inorganic chemistry. Furthermore, the DIC continues to work to give our members opportunities to present their work and also be able to attend excellent programming at the National ACS meetings. In the following months I will be working to begin the process of

strategic planning for our division, and would appreciate any thoughts you all may have. Please contact me at [email protected] with comments and/or requests.

The INOR program at the ACS meeting in Indianapolis may have been smaller than other recent ACS, but the meeting still had many highlights. The young investigator symposium program celebrated a 10-year birthday and continues to be a big hit and recognizes some of our brightest young scientists at an early age. A testimony to how great such program is can readily be seen by other divisions having adopted equivalent programs. The DIC also presented awards to two sets of undergraduate researchers and their mentors. Chelsea L. Mandell and Prof. Chip Nataro from Lafayette College, and Lauren E. Reuther and Prof. Elizabeth T. Papish from Drexel University (now at University of Alabama). Such programs are outstanding and I encourage you to participate in them by submitting an application for the 2014 program – it is not to early to begin preparing for your involvement in next year's program!! We are actively working on proposals for symposia to be held at the future meetings. Symposia are key to DIC's program, and we are receiving increasingly diverse proposals for symposia that serve all the members of DIC. Please consider getting involved and submitting a symposium proposal for an upcoming ACS meeting–especially if your particular chemistry seems not well represented. The program for Dallas will already be set by the time you read this newsletter. The program for San Francisco is also very full, so before you suggest

any symposia please consult symposia that are already planned. Ample opportunities for new symposia for 2015 still exist. The guidelines for proposals can be found at http://acsdic.org/wordpress/symposia/. Symposia approved by the DIC executive committee will be financially supported at the level of $2000 for each half-day session scheduled on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday; $2500 will be given to each half-day session scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday; up to maximum limit of $8000.! In the last few months I have worked to put together a list of new DIC officers for 2014. A large and diverse slate of candidates were put up for election and I’d like to thank John Protasiewicz for his work in overseeing the recent on-line elections. The listing of new DIC Executive Committee officers is given above. I look forward to working with the new Chair-elect (either Cort Pierpont or James Boncella) in 2014, as well as the full group of officers of DIC.

Finally, I’d like to congratulate the 2014 ACS National Award winners from the Inorganic Division and the ACS Fellow Award that Kenneth Karlin and I nominated. Of the 6 candidates hat DIC sponsored 4 were successful and we congratulate John Protasiewicz (current DIC Secretary), Kenneth Raymond (DIC Chair 1996), Galen Stucky (DIC Chair 1986), and Tobin Marks (DIC Chair 1997) for becoming 2013 ACS Fellows. In addition, additional award winners include T. Don Tilley, Guy Bertrand, Kenneth Caulton, Larry Sneddon, Sara Skrabalak, and not the least, Steve Lippard that received the Priestly Medal. I look forward to the upcoming 2014 ACS National Meeting in Dallas (March 16-20) where these individuals will present their award lectures. It will be great to celebrate their accomplishments with the entire Division of Inorganic Chemistry at the plenary award presentations and at their respective award symposia.

Message from DIC Secretary, John Protasiewicz

I am pleased to announce that our new website is up and running. I hope you will find it easier to navigate, especially if you are using portable devices. A lot of the credit goes to our new webmaster Erika Tompkins. The section on “Meetings of Interest”, however, needs suggestions from you. Our DIC election is currently being held, and I must give credit to Charles Tompkins for doing a great job programming the election site (as he has done in the past).

If you wish to contact me please shoot me an email at [email protected]. If you would like to check in on DIC activities and be updated by Facebook please check out (or even "Like") our Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/ACS-Division-of-Inorganic-Chemistry/193412197343213.

Members and nonmembers may find information and news from the Division of Inorganic Chemistry at the DIC website www.ascdic.org. Members are encouraged to maintain current e-mail addresses in their ACS profiles. These profiles are used to generate the regularly updated email lists that the Secretary receives from the ACS. Members may view and edit their ACS profiles by logging in at www.chemistry.org. Current division and subdivision memberships may also be confirmed in the member’s profile at this site. The DIC email list is confidential, and is used only to convey DIC news, announce DIC elections, and to inform members of upcoming meetings, and award and funding opportunities. This email list will never be provided to third parties, such as commercial advertisers. DIC members may belong to one or more DIC subdivisions (at no additional cost).

Message from Treasurer, Seth Cohen

The Division of Inorganic Chemistry is financially sound, with a balance as of August 31, 2013 of ~$236,000.  However, this amount is down from the same time in 2012 (~$274,000) and 2011 (~$338,000).  Therefore, expenses have exceed income by ~$50,000 for the last 2 years.  The Division has been comfortable spending its substantial reserves, which have been used primarily for abundant sponsorship of ACS symposia, meetings relevant to the Division, and student awards.  The

Division now plans on developing a concrete year-by-year budget that is matched to annual income.  In addition, the Division is developing ideas for the most appropriate amount for the reserves to be held at and the use of any remaining reserves.  Decisions on these matters will be forthcoming over the course of the next year.

The SciMix Poster sessions

The SciMix is the special Convention wide poster session which is held on Monday evenings at 8-10PM. It is in addition to the Inorganic Division poster sessions which are on Sunday and Tuesday for the spring meeting and Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the fall meeting. Posters presented at the SciMix are also presented at one of the Inorganic Division Poster sessions. In my opinion, the only reason for not indicating that you want your poster to be considered for the SciMix is if you are not going to be at the meeting on Monday evening. But you can’t be chosen for the SciMix if you don’t check the SciMix box during the abstract submission. We are able to choose a number of posters for the SciMix that is equal to 10% of the total number of abstracts (oral + posters). This means that approximately 20% of the posters can be chosen for presentation at the SciMix. Take advantage of the chance to present your poster twice by checking the SciMix box when you are submitting your poster abstracts.

Fall ACS National Meeting, 2014: San Francisco, CA, August 10-14 Attendance will be significantly higher than at the usual fall meeting. In addition to the large number of special

symposium, there will be symposiums honoring the winners of the Exxon-Mobil award in Solid-State Chemistry and the ACS award in Nanoscience and the Young Investigators Symposium. There will be sessions on Thursday.

News from the Solid State Subdivision-Ram Seshadri

At the recent Fall 2013 ACS in Indianapolis, Solid State Chemists had the pleasure of participating in a number of interesting symposia, amongst which was the very well-attended one on “Synthesis of Solid State Materials: Beyond "Heat-and-Beat", organized by John Wiley (University of New Orleans) and Viktor Poltavets (Michigan State). The symposium started Tuesday morning, and brought to the fore, a crucial but potentially underappreciated domain of research in solids. A Tuesday afternoon hiatus in the symposium accommodated the ExxonMobil Solid State Chemistry Faculty Fellow Award Symposium. This well-attended session was chaired by Mark Green (Kent, UK) and

attendees had the chance to hear awardee Tyrel McQueen (Johns Hopkins), followed by an eclectic mix of mostly young invited speakers from Finland, Japan, the UK, and the US. The deadline for nominations for the 2014 ExxonMobil Award is January 15th. Details regarding nominations can be found on the ACS DIC website.

News from the Coordination Chemistry Subdivision-! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Kristin Bowman-James

Greetings to DIC Members and Coordination Chemists

During its first year our new subdivision got off to a rousing start, especially at the Indy ACS meeting in August! In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize to the grandfather of coordination chemistry, a three day (five session) symposium was held entitled Alfred Werner: Coordination Chemistry a Century after the Nobel Prize. Twenty-nine speakers provided highlights of past and current coordination chemistry. Some of the talks highlighted historical developments, while others provided the latest developments not only in the traditional sense of coordination chemistry, but also in areas that

have evolved from the simple concepts of dual valences over the last 100 years. It was a tremendous event and I want to thank my co-organizers Rich Eisenberg and Steve Koch for all their help and support as well as the presenters for making the event such a success! My co-organizers and I also want to send hearty thanks and our great appreciation for those providing funding for the symposium. We were very fortunate to receive generous contributions from Steve Koch from the Michelle Millar Memorial Fund, Mike Strem from Strem Chemicals Inc., Inorganic Chemistry (ACS), Springer, Taylor & Francis, and last but definitely not least from the Division of Inorganic Chemistry. Thanks also go to all who attended the symposium. The room was full with standing room only for most of the talks! In closing, I would just like to remind those of you who have not yet joined the subdivision, now is the time! ACS dues requests will be arriving soon, and this year we hope to have many new members. Remember, joining is free of charge and you get the benefit of voting on subdivision issues such as elections! In closing I want to wish my successor, Jonas Peters, a successful year as Chair of the subdivision and the readers a happy and productive year to come.

ACS DIC NEWSLETTER! FALL-WINTER 2013

DIVISION OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY 26 www.acsdic.org

ABOUT THE ACS DIC

The Division of Inorganic Chemistry represents a diverse body of scientists who come together to understand and promote the richness of the chemistry of the elements. Molecular biologists, materials scientists, and many types of chemists are members of this division. Due to the diversity of interests among our members, four subdivisions are available for membership in addition to the general membership in the Division.

The Division has several responsibilities: the development and coordination of programming of interest to our members at national meetings; continuing improvement in the education of current and future chemists in the beauty of inorganic chemistry and the value of chemistry in general; representation of our members' interests to the ACS through the election of Councilors and other positions; and maintaining the fiscal health of the Division to support all other activities. The Division usually has one of the largest technical programs at the national meetings.

The goals of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry:1. To advance the science of Inorganic Chemistry.2. To provide an organization within which close contact among chemists interested in Inorganic Chemistry can

be maintained.3. To arrange programs dealing with Inorganic Chemistry for the National Meetings of the ACS.4. To organize and conduct symposia on special topics in Inorganic Chemistry at times and places designated by

the Executive Committee of the DIC.5. To promote the teaching of Inorganic Chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Selected areas of chemistry in which the Division's activities are focused:

Organometallic Chemistry. Includes the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of main group, transition metal, and rare earth organometallic compounds, and the applications of such compounds in organic synthesis, inorganic synthesis, and catalysis.Bioinorganic Chemistry. Includes all aspects of the chemistry of the metallic elements and small inorganic molecules in biological systems.Solid-State and Materials Chemistry. Includes the synthesis, characterization, and physical and chemical properties of solids that contain metallic and/or main group elements.Coordination Chemistry. Includes the synthesis, characterization, and physical and chemical properties of classical coordination compounds.Nanoscience. Includes the synthesis, characterization, and physical and chemical properties of nanostructured materials (inorganic nanocrystals, inorganic-organic hybrid materials etc.).
