Community Home Health & Hospice’s 35th anniversary year (1977 – 2012) is coming to a close. With gratitude we recognize two prominent leaders and early champions of hospice care in Longview: John McEwen and Dr. William Holaday.

JOHN m. mCEWEN: board president from 1977 – 1992

After 30 years in leadership with Weyerhaeuser including international assignments, John McEwen retired in 1977 as regional vice president for Southwest Washington with headquarters in Longview. 1977 was the same year county health nurse Lorraine Berndt started Community Home Health in Longview. Shortly into his retirement, John became a founding member of Community’s board of directors, serving as president for 15 years until he moved to Redmond, Washington in 1992. John died in March of this year in Redmond. continued on page 2

Dr. WIllIAm J. HOlADAyANN HOlADAy, gUEST WrITEr

Dr. Holaday was the first cancer specialist (oncologist) to practice in Longview. We came from San Antonio, Texas to run the radiation therapy unit at St. Johns Hospital in August of 1981 which was the first cancer treatment facility in the area. Prior to 1981, patients had to travel to Portland for treatment. Dr. Holaday was the medical director and I was the department manager and technical director. continued on page 2

mCEWEN, CONT. frOm frONT pAgE

His daughter, Marie McEwen, recalls, “My father contributed much to business and the community during his lifetime, but the contribution he was most proud of was helping to start Community Home Health in Longview. He often told the story of its development and expansion to include the hospice program. He knew this was a vital service that Longview needed to serve the needs of the community.”

Helen Hafner, a retired nurse anesthetist at St. Johns Hospital, served on the board with John in the early ’80s. Helen and her husband, Dr. Paul G. Hafner, were close friends with John and his wife, Isabel. Helen recollects John’s extraordinary efforts to raise funds for Community. In Helen’s words, “John was influential in securing significant funding from the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation to start the agency’s newest service—hospice care.” Over the years, Weyerhaeuser Company and the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation have given more than $100,000 for capital and program needs including hospice services, children’s bereavement and in-home telemonitoring for home health patients.

Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund (formerly Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation) President Brian Hewitt said, “It has been a pleasure giving money to such a finely-run and appreciated organization in our local community. I believe nearly everyone in our area has been touched by the organization and we all really appreciate it.”

When hospice volunteer Molly Monroe was a young girl, she remembered John as a kind, lovely man and friend of the family who was never too busy to focus on her and her brother. As Molly reminisces, “He had the patience of a saint and would give you his full attention.” John’s legacy of leadership, dedication, and full attention helped make the hospice program what it is today.

HOlADAy, CONT. frOm frONT pAgE

Dr. Holaday built the foundation and set the tone of quality of cancer care for the citizens of this area. He was dedicated to his patients, advocated for their best interests and soon recognized the need for a hospice program. He worked diligently with Lorraine Berndt to formalize plans to expand Community Home Health to include hospice care and to campaign for the certificate of need. In 1984 the community dedicated the Hospice Care Center—the first inpatient facility in the Pacific Northwest and one of only 26 across the nation.

Dr. Holaday was instrumental in dealing with resistance to the idea of hospice amongst local physicians. Hospice care was a new concept in the United States at that time, one which very few in the medical community fully understood. The hospice program was accepted once families experienced the profound benefits of hospice care.

Dr. Holaday was a true clinician—not just a deliverer of treatment to his patients. He managed every aspect of their care from treatment to cure or to end-of-life support, which included hospice care. Not only was he there for patients and families, but hospice staff depended on him especially in the initial stages of the development of hospice services. He acted as an advisor to nurses and volunteers at their case management meetings in the difficult task of symptom control. Care of the dying and their families requires the dependable support of a compassionate professional which Dr. Holaday demonstrated throughout his career. He created the legacy of care of each individual which exists today in the community cancer center and in hospice. He died suddenly on October 26, 2000.

It is an honor to shine the spotlight on two early hospice champions John McEwen and Dr. William Holaday. Their legacy of care and comfort for patients and families continues to inspire us today.

Greg Pang, CEO

lETTEr frOm THE CEO Dear friends,

As our agency’s 35th anniversary year draws to a close, I want to thank you for celebrating this milestone with us. I greatly enjoyed spending time with so many friends like you throughout the year. Maybe you joined us at our Home At Last fundraiser, or at the Donor Appreciation Party or perhaps you attended the grand opening of the James Avery Center for Grief Support and Recovery.

Thank you for your continued financial and volunteer support. This year, you helped us add needed community services including our new Avery Center in Longview. The Avery Center is a safe and compassionate place for grieving and healing from the loss of a loved one. The center offers free services and is available to everyone in the community, not just hospice families. Dedicated areas for children, teens and adults offer personalized grief services including support groups and activities. Future plans include a resource library, memorial garden and remembrance wall.

Pet Peace of Mind is a new service that keeps pets and families together during hospice care. This new program helps ensure pet care is not an unnecessary hardship for hospice families because pets are family members, too. Thanks to your gifts and volunteering, we provide pet food and care including grooming, vaccinations, minor treatments, and if necessary, finding a new home for a beloved pet. All services are free for hospice patients.

We’ve been caring for Clark County families for nearly 25 years. To serve the growing population, we plan to expand our home care, home health, hospice and grief support services. Our goal is to build a 42,000-square-foot facility in the Vancouver Salmon Creek area to house these services as well as a 10-bed hospice care center, conference center and memorial garden. Thanks to the support of legislators, community groups and hundreds of citizens, we were awarded a Certificate of Need this year from the Washington State Department of Health. This is a required first step in starting our project. We hope to break ground in 2013.

For the fifth year in a row, in 2012 we were named to the HomeCare Elite™, a compilation of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. This recognition identifies our agency as among the top 25 percent of nearly 12,000 Medicare-certified agencies nationwide. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures including quality outcomes. This means we provide our patients with the best possible care while managing our business efficiently and effectively.

You share in our success. As a local community-based nonprofit, we depend on you—our patients, donors and volunteers. This newsletter lists our many supporters whose gifts help us care for people wherever they call home. Thank you for partnering with us. We look forward to meeting the new year together.

Sincerely,

Greg Pang, MHA, CHCECEO

Thank you for your thoughtful gifts. Each gift allows us to continue delivering care, comfort and love to the families who need our services each day. We sincerely appreciate all of our supporters.

In the words of the grateful daughter of a hospice patient,

“On behalf of our entire family, please accept our deep appreciation for all you did for our dad. Words can’t console us, nor express how much your care meant to us. We only hoped Dad’s final days would be peaceful and, because of you, we have that consolation. Thank you so very much.” Donations received between June 1 – September 30, 2012 are listed below. Names in red indicate gifts made in honor or memory of a loved one. We list all donations here with the exception of those who wish to remain anonymous. November 16th marked the opening of the James Avery Center for Grief Support and Recovery (Avery Center) on 12th Avenue in Longview. For many, being with others who’ve experienced a similar loss may help them deal with life without their loved one. Families will be able to attend grief support programs together in a dedicated space for different age groups.

Children will have a place where they may engage in creative play and remembering activities. Teens may gather around a foosball or pool table, or lounge on overstuffed chairs with other teens who understand what they are going through. Adults will have a living room setting where they may gather together in a supportive environment. This is a place where people learn how to grieve as well as experience a sense of belonging.

Our agency serves nearly 1,000 hospice patients and their families each year. As part of our nonprofit mission, we provide free grief support to everyone in the community, not only hospice families. We welcome all grieving families to use our free grief support services. The children’s grief support group has up to 35 children, the teen group has up to 20 participants and there are 40 to 60 adults participating in support groups each month.

Kelsey Oliver lost her mother when she was only 10-years-old. She participated in our children’s grief support services including summer camp, later returning as a volunteer to help other children. She sent us this note: “The children need someone to help them understand why they feel the way they do. The reason I came back is because it helped me so much.”

We are proud to have this new space to enhance this valuable service. Learn more on page 7.

Hospice patient James Avery left a bequest to our agency, hoping one day his estate would benefit grieving families. As a result of his thoughtful gift, we transformed our 3,500-square-foot building on 12th Avenue in Longview into a center for grief support. Just outside the center, we are creating a memorial garden where families will visit, reflect and process their grief.

Our work began with a vision of providing a comforting, safe space for anyone needing grief support in our community. Volunteers and staff spent months working side-by-side. Generous donors made cash and in-kind gifts and others have pledged future gifts. Thanks to this collaborative effort, the Avery Center will offer a healing place for grieving families. Throughout this process, we have been ever mindful that what matters most is that care, comfort and love is extended to everyone who enters.

As part of our nonprofit mission, we provide free grief support to everyone in the community, not only hospice families. A community member needing grief support may have lost someone through disease, violence, accident, suicide or military activity.

Mr. Avery’s gift brings hope for grieving families. Children, teens and adults will work through their grief among their peers in sessions led by highly-skilled social workers and volunteers. Some participants return years later to volunteer to help others on their grief journey. Mr. Avery’s legacy lives on in the successful lives of those we are honored to serve.

For more information about making a planned gift or to notify us of your support, contact Julie Rinard at 360.414.5406 or [email protected].

Van-tastic deliVery Keeps home patients safe and comfortable

We serve patients in remote areas throughout Cowlitz, Clark and Wahkiakum Counties in Washington and in Columbia County, Oregon. This includes homebound patients who are healing from an illness or injury or managing a chronic condition, as well as hospice patients who are receiving care in their homes. It is impossible for many patients to get needed medical equipment on their own. So we deliver hospital beds, lift chairs, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks and other medical equipment to their homes. Patients and their families can’t wait for these important supplies so we are available to meet urgent delivery needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We have several delivery vans which are essential to the safety and comfort of those we serve. Earlier this year, our high-mileage van broke down on the interstate and we needed to replace it quickly. Thanks to your gifts designated for the Patient Care Endowment, we were able to purchase a delivery van with the income from the endowment.

The new van required some minor interior modifications to meet the high safety standards we follow. We now have a great working van and can serve our patients without delay. Thank you for your continued gifts to the Patient Care Endowment.

5 Healthy Holiday Habits to Keep After the Season by Leta Shy; www.fitsugar.com (Reprinted with permission)

They say the holidays are a time for overindulgence, but there are many healthy habits that we find ourselves practicing during this season that should be no-brainers anytime throughout the year! As the holidays wind down, I'll be reminding myself to practice these habits long after the New Year's celebrations are over. Here are some of my favorites.

• Getting enough sleep. When things are hectic at home and at work, we tend to take it out on our sleep. Hav-ing a few days off over the holidays reminded me that sleep is essential to health; after all, it helps us stay alert, keep from gaining weight, and could be the secret to long life.

• Cutting down on caffeine. My morning work routine always includes that hot cup of joe, but over a long holiday I sometimes find myself forgoing the coffee. And although caffeine in moderation has been proven to be good for us, caffeine dependence can lead to feeling anxious, jittery, and sleep-deprived, so I may want to try to continue to give up that morning cup a few days a week.

• Spending time with friends. The holidays are a time to get together and reconnect, and since our social relationships can help us live a longer life, prioritizing time with our friends is a surefire way to help keep us healthy throughout the year.

• Cooking at home. It's easy to get into a take-out rut during a regular work week, but holidays parties and potlucks are a great reminder that home cooked meals are healthier!

• Varying exercise. Traveling can take a toll on fitness routines, but it can also be the perfect excuse to try a new way to exercise. Whether you went on a walking tour of the town you are visiting or checked out a new fitness class with old friends, keep your holiday fitness routine in mind if you are getting bored with your regular one. It can be just the motivation you need to seek out something different.

What healthy holiday habits will you be continuing in the New Year?
