Old Man Winter has been slow com-ing to the Tetons this year, but we’re ready for it whenever the snow flies!

Dan Streubel (race organizer extraordinaire) is leading the Nordic committee again this winter, with plenty of able help from many volunteers and paid groomers.

We’ve overhauled the trusty Pisten Bul-ly this fall to the tune of $10,000, replaced the worn original rubber belts of the tracks and completed regular preventive mainte-nance. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Volunteers make the world go ’round

Greetings TVTAP support-ers— As 2006 comes to a close we are tremendously

excited for the future. We have lots of plans, impetus, and re-sources; a groundswell of public support from you, our support-ers, and a climate of cooperation in our local governments.

Our board just completed a re-treat, facilitated by Clare Payne Symmons, whom many of you may remember from the Com-munity Foundation of Jackson Hole. We reviewed our past and renewed our priorities for the future. We cleaned up our board committees and our membership structure (see page 5). We dropped a few events in order to focus more fully on others.

In this issue of our newslet-ter you will read a farewell from Christian Santelices, who has left the Executive Director (E.D.) position and joined the TVTAP board in order to devote more time to personal endeavors. You will get to meet Tim Adams, who joined TVTAP in November as our new E.D. Tim’s experience, competence, calm, and humor have already been an asset to our organization.

Our plans for 2007 call for prog-ress on our major committees: Pathways, Nordic, Trail, Member-ship, and Fundraising.

Plans and progress in the Nor-dic realm are detailed elsewhere in this newsletter, but remember to look on www.tvtap.org for dai-ly ski trails grooming updates.

The Pathways Committee will work with Teton County, Idaho to further our goal of adopting and implementing the Trails and Pathways Concept Plan, which was developed with much public and agency input at our Vision Workshop in December 2005. We are also involved with planning a Victor east-west pathway to con-nect the housing west of Victor to the schools. We plan to ultimately write an ITD (Idaho Transporta-tion Department)/ Safe Routes to Schools grant for this route; it will be due in January 2008. There is a lot to be done on this com-mittee; if you would like to vol-unteer on a project or offer your input please contact Tim Adams or Christian Santelices.

The Trails Committee is com-ing off a very successful summer (I can’t wait to use my trail-work Targhee ski pass upgrade!) and already planning for next year. We will have a format similar to 2006; we plan to work on Red Creek in the southern Big Holes (near Corral Creek) and then put in two separate days on the South Horseshoe Creek trail, our TVTAP adopted trail. A multi-day trail work project is also planned for August back in Alaska Basin; stay tuned for more information as it develops.

The new Membership Commit-tee has been hard at work. At the end of our board retreat we took some time and clarified our mem-bership structure. Look for de-tails in this newsletter. The new

structure will make it easier for us and for you to keep your mem-bership current. This committee works closely with the Fundrais-ing Committee, which is charged with the challenge of keeping our coffers full, especially as the Old Bill’s Fun Run donation structure is slated to change in 2008.

I hope to see you all either out on the trails this winter or cele-brating with us at the Nordic din-ner on December 9 at the Wild-wood Room

Thank you for your continued support; I am more and more convinced that volunteers make the world go around.

OUTGOING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Farewell—

Christian Santelices

TVTAP is stronger than it has ever been. The past year has seen incredible growth in our organization, financially, pro-gramatically and with a strong and dedicated board of directors. Our Nordic program is stronger than ever with two new four-stroke snowmobiles on the way thanks to grants from the Teton Springs Foundation and the Communi-ty Foundation of Jackson Hole. Check out JB’s Nordic Update for more information on all that is go-ing on in the Nordic world.

This past summer we launched an ambitious Trails Days program with the goal of increasing our sup-port of Forest Service system trails in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. It was a resounding suc-cess both in terms of participation and actual mileage on the ground. Read Chris Larson’s Trail Report to get the final details of what a great trail building season we had.

On the pathways front, we made huge strides, although these will translate into an incredible amount of work in the next few years. As of the end of October we received final approval of three critical projects to Teton County Idaho and the City of Driggs. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) accepted TVTAP’s proposal for a Driggs North-South Pathway that will connect all of the schools and parks in Driggs with the Victor-Driggs Pathway. ITD also accepted proposals for repaving Packsaddle Road, including bike lanes the length of the road, and a redesign

of Main Street in Driggs. The Main Street project is now in the plan-ning process with myself and JB on the citizen committee working on design ideas. You made this pos-sible! Tom Cole, District 6 engineer for ITD, expressed his gratitude in a letter to TVTAP stating that no other projects had ever received as much public support during the review process. Your letters made the difference in finalizing the de-cision of the ITD board to support our community. Thank You!

In the meantime, there is much work to be done. While we were awarded significant funds to cre-ate a Driggs pathway and rede-sign Main Street, we need your support and input to make our plans acceptable to the whole community. Look out for notices about public meetings we will hold to engage the community on pathway placement and Main Street designs. And if you have some time to volunteer, we are creating a Pathways Committee whose mission will be to make pathways plans and engage the community in the importance of pathways for non-motorized transportation in our valley. Please give us a call if you would like to join us in this important endeavor to connect our commu-nity through pathways.

Continuing the hard work that we have begun is Tim Adams, TVTAP’s new Executive Director. I have decided to step down to pursue the many and varied proj-ects that I am pursuing, including

running my guiding business and growing the Global Community Project, the non-profit I founded four years ago to do cultural ex-change and service learning proj-ects for students. I will also be joining the Board of Directors to continue the work that I started as a volunteer.

Tim will be an incredible as-set to TVTAP and will grow the organization in ways that I was unable to do. We are extremely lucky to have someone with so much experience and knowledge about non-profits and who is ex-cited about the job and dedicated to living in Teton Valley. Please stop by our office in the Cougar Building at 60 E. Ashley to meet Tim, send him an e-mail or give him a call with your questions, comments or just to say hello.

It’s been a great ride! I have real-ly enjoyed my time as the TVTAP ED. Having moved here five years ago, and still working primarily in Jackson, it gave my family and I an opportunity to become part of the community in Teton Valley. We’ve made new, lifelong friends and have been able to contribute to the health of our community in a tangible way. Thank you for all of you support over the last couple of years. I look forward to continuing to serve TVTAP on the Board of Dirctors and continuing the important work that we are all doing together.

Thanks,Christian

T he volunteer board of TVTAP held a two-day retreat in No-vember to redefine priorities

and chart our course for the future. Clare Payne Symmons of Charitable Solutions Inc., served as facilitator to herd our group of cats. Major TVTAP benefactor Erik Schultz donated the use of his house in Alta, Wyoming (just adjacent to the Alta Nordic track), where members spent the night focusing on the organization with no distractions. The weather cooperated fully by supplying a drizzly, grey day that encouraged the kind of indoor brainstorming that a bluebird day never could!

After reviewing the history of TVTAP and identifying oppor-tunities and obstacles, the group re-stated its mission of promoting a trails-and-pathways-connected community. Previous retreats for-mulated concrete goals such as writing grants for the Ski Hill Road bike lane, and most of these goals have now been achieved. There has been remarkable progress at TVTAP and the board members

are united in a vision of a walking-, biking-, and Nordic-skiing-friendly community. So the retreat was not needed to solve any crisis, but to re-prioritize and re-energize.

Feeling overextended, the board dropped the Ski Swap and Bike Swap from the calendar. The Teton Ridge Classic, Spud Chase, Targhee Hill Climb, Horseshoe Challenge, Nordic Dinner, and Summer Trail Days all remain as fundraising and awareness-raising events.

TVTAP has enjoyed a best-ever year for fundraising. While this is due in part to record income from this year’s Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charity, the Community Founda-tion of Jackson Hole recently an-nounced that Idaho non-profits will no longer be eligible to partici-pate in Old Bill’s after 2007. How to replace the matching funds of Old Bill’s was a major topic of discus-sion. A task force of Teton Valley non-profits has formed under the name of Giving Solutions Team in order to come up with a solution to the probable loss of Old Bill’s.

One stated goal of the retreat is to fund a full-time ED position by March 1, 2007. Up until now, the ED position has been funded for 30 hours per week.

Board members are concerned that little tangible progress has been made on paved pathways in the valley. Compared to our other areas of concern, paved pathways require the most background work and lon-gest term outlook to gauge progress. In fact pathways progress has been grinding slowly along in the back-ground since TVTAP was founded. Look for Idaho Transportation De-partment work to begin in 2009/10 for the Driggs North-South Path-way, Driggs Main Street redesign, and the Packsaddle Road project.

TVTAP has achieved its objectives through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and a single paid staff person. Retreats, like this most re-cent led by Clare Payne Symmons, have helped us stay right on task. It has been our privilege to serve the community, and the future is bright for continued success.

Board Retreat Keeps TVTAP on Task

maintenance and grooming work. We depend on your support to meet these costs! By becoming a TVTAP member at or above the Rambler level (see p5), you will receive a ski trails pin and support our mission.

Our annual Nordic Fundraiser party takes place on Saturday, December 9, at the WildWood Room in Vic-

tor. Come enjoy the best party of the season, see your Nordic ski buddies, savor Chef Bill Boney’s fine cui-sine, bid for the excellent goods generously donated by our strongest supporters at the silent auction, and support your ski trails.

Thanks, and happy trails. See you out there. —JB, retired trails groomer

Greetings Nordic Skiers! The club will meet twice a week for 6 weeks at Teton Springs (Wednesday) and Alta (Friday) after school from 3:30 - 5pm. The program is for kids ages 5 - 14. Younger kids are welcome free with full-time direct parent supervision. Junior and senior high school stu-dents will also be accommodated this year; call me for details. A parent will be expected to help a minimum of one session for each kid signed up. Parents will also be scheduled to bring something good to eat for the skiers. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Greetings—

Tim Adams

Dear Members and Friends of TVTAP, My name is Tim Adams, and it is with

great pleasure and excitement that I introduce myself as the new ex-ecutive director for Teton Valley Trails and Pathways. It is a privi-lege to be given the opportunity to serve Teton Valley and help create a community connected through pathways. One reason I chose to reside in this valley with my wife, Shawn, and our two sons, Finnegan and Benjamin, was because of the conscious desire of the residents to have dedicated trails and path-ways for everyone to enjoy. Wheth-er biking, hiking, walking, skiing, or just plain being in the outdoors, this community understands the importance of assuring non-motor-ized access throughout the commu-nity. When I became aware of the opportunity to support this vital endeavor, I could not let it pass by.

I am lucky that the TVTAP Board of Directors feel that I am the right person to continue the great work that has preceded me.

I have spent my entire professional career working for non-profit orga-nizations (unless this is a joke about not making money). I started my work in student-directed non-prof-its at Humboldt University. From there, I worked in a variety of out-door and environmental education programs and schools including the North Carolina Outward Bound School, Yosemite National Institutes, and most recently as director of an environmental education school in San Francisco for the YMCA.

My passion has always been in the outdoors, assuring that we not only respect what we have now, but look at sustainable practices for the future. I believe the way we assure a future for our outdoor space is by making the outdoors accessible

and inviting for everyone. The act of walking, biking, or skiing in our neighborhoods and community to-day will promote the importance of continued access to the outdoors for the next generation and beyond.

Teton Valley Trails and Pathways is dedicated to making sure that this community is connected through-out the valley and beyond by path-ways that promote sustainability. TVTAP’s success will stand as a benchmark for other communities. I can think of no better way to live, support, and serve this commu-nity than by working in this posi-tion. I look forward to continuing the great work that Christian and others have worked so tirelessly to achieve, as well as to developing new paths for our future. Thank you for supporting our mission!

—Tim Adams TVTAP Executive Director

OUR TRAILS PHILOSOPHY

• Be maintainable and sustainable. Trails should be to grade and not too steep. Scar-ring and erosion are side effects of poor trail design and/or building.

• Lay light on the land and appear to have just happened. The best trails show little evidence of the work that goes into them.

• Be considered a recreation destination in themselves, emphasizing the experience rath-er than getting from one end to the other.

• Stone construction should be utilized wherever feasible to reduce future maintenance needs.

• Preserve the natural environment. Riparian zones and key wildlife habitat should be avoid-ed. Scenic vistas such as meadows should be preserved through good route planning.

• Provide opportunities for all ability levels. Family-oriented trails that are accessible for all ability levels promote trail use. Pro-vide for a variety of recreational opportuni-ties for users of different ability levels and modes of transport.

• Provide connectivity for users. Connect trailheads to pathways systems. Provide smart and often separate trail connectivity throughout the range for all user groups in order to avoid conflict and wear on narrow trails. The needs and impacts of different user groups should be recognized and us-ers separated when not compatible.

• Be clearly signed/ marked at the trailhead as to what type of user is allowed. Implement cow-proof “ride-around” gates where appropriate.

Teton Valley Trails & Pathways believes that trails should:

T his summer TVTAP (in coor-dination with the Teton Ba-sin Ranger District and many

dedicated volunteers) spent over 840 hours working on local trails. We achieved magnificent result through hard work and determina-tion. These efforts, aside from mak-ing trails easier to walk and ride, improved life in our valley. Here is a list of what was accomplished:

CORRAL CREEK* Four separate re-routes total-

ing 900 feet of new single track trail.

* 700 feet of old tread rehabilitated* 15 armored rolling dips con-

structed* One stream crossing hardened* Four trees cut out* 30 feet single-tier crib wall con-

structed

CALAMITY CREEK* 2600 feet of new single-track

construction* 30 feet of causeway* One stream crossing hardened

and improved

TWIN CREEK/LONG RIDGE* 1400 feet of new single track

construction* 15 feet of single tier crib wall

constructed

All together, 140 people volun-teered over the course of three trails days.

We have already started planning for next summer and expect to surpass the impressive numbers reached this year. Please visit www.TVTAP.org for updates on our 2007 Trails Days Program.

This program was only successful because of the many volunteers who came out. Please join us next summer to assure that Teton Val-ley continues to have great trails.

We also want to extend our grati-tude to our sponsors who donated their time, energy, and resources to assure the program’s success.

12 TETON VALLEY TRAILS & PATHWAYS Winter 2006-07

On October 18, Board Member Buol Heslin and his wife Janet Conway

hosted a reception to honor the founders, early board members and major contributors who provided the vision, hard work and resources that established TVTAP as the valley’s leading advocate for trails and pathway development. Their generous support has resulted in the qual-ity nordic, hiking and biking events and activities that are a major component of the outdoor experience that makes Teton Valley so attractive to individuals and families.

Several attendees shared early stories, further visions and wish-lists, and the Executive Director gave an overview of the year’s ac-complishments as well as works in progress and future goals.

A highlight of the evening was an improptu, moving personal testi-monial to the meaning of what TVTAP has accomplished by benefac-tor Erik Schultz. The unanimous opinion of attendees was that future accomplishments should be celebrated annually.
